Howdy, Shaky Stick!  What has brought you to Aces High (as opposed to other on-line flight sims)?  For me, it was getting the urge to fly again after so long away from on-line flying and deciding that Aces High was the best out there.  It was a pleasant surprise when I found that it also has the largest concentration of former AW folks.

Is there a way to get my DOS version (v 1.5, i think) to run on a new-fangled computer?
Title: Anyone remember??
Post by: Brooke on July 15, 2005, 02:46:54 PM
Possibly.  I've run SVGA Air Warrior v1.20 on Windows XP using a utility called "dosbox".  You can get it here:

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net)

You need to play with the emulation speed or frameskip or both to get it even in the ballpark of playable.  See the readme file on the following topics:

CTRL-F7       Decrease frameskip.
CTRL-F8       Increase frameskip.
CTRL-F11      Slow down emulation (Decrease DOSBox Cycles).
CTRL-F12      Speed up emulation (Increase DOSBox Cycles).

I ran the SVGA version in WinXP but had to fly with keyboard and mouse. It won't recognize my usb controllers - its probably hard coded to look for a game port.

I have all the boxed versions and even the latest edition with patch won't recognize my controllers :(
You could actually dogfight the AI, they were predictable, but good practice :)

I believe so.  It does at least recognize them, and I've played around a little with mine in AW v1.20.  It sees them, but which axis is what is a screwed up for me.  I might be able to fix it with fiddling, but I was just interested in using the old AW for getting screen shots of films of old scenarios, so using the joystick didn't matter that much.

OK, somoen help me out and describe the new arenas and their use? Most are self explanatory, but still :)

Have downloaded the client and am trying out the flight model. I'll see how I do with my "twisty stick" before I consider new ones.

Main Arena is exactly what its name implies. Every plane is available, and some cost Perks to Fly. Capture enemy bases is the name of the game, but you can do whatever you want really.

Training Arena is where to spruce up your skills, There is a Dedicated group of Trainers, who you can contact for help.

Dueling Arena is where you go to duke it out, with another opponent or a group of opponents.

Combat Theater is a Rotating Group of Terrains and Planesets, Changed Weekly AFAIK.

Special Events is set for Special Events, Wenesday Nights Eastern, Thursday Afternoon Eastern, Friday Night Eastern, are the staple events, This is where Scenarios and other events take place too.

So I take it the poulation ratio of dweeb/grifers is lower in the combat theater?

Some impressions....

Twisty stick has got to GO! I need rudder pedals...using the twister has me hitting rudder when I don't need it...plays hell with gunnery.

Flight model seems "bouncy" (yes, a "real" plane bounces a bit if you manhandle the stick or release stick pressure abruptly"). Plays hell with my gunnery .

Turned off that auto take off and stall limiter crap first thing. Managed a take off, some touch and goes and a full landing first thing out..I LIKE how low speed landing performance is handled, but its hard to judge you distance above ground (typical for flight sims...2-D screen and all). Bounced the freaking plane twice, but kept the nose up. Spins are easy in the 'Cat at least, usual recovery tecniques seem to work well.

Whats with the planes flying with one or both wings shot off? This doesn't happen in the arena, does it?

Combat Theater is often almost empty.  Seems not many folks want to be restricted to realistic period-plane matchups as opposed to how it is in the Main Arena, where you fly whatever you want.

I've never used one, but I'd assume those things do suck for flight sims.  Even if they didn't, that's not the control set for a real plane, so I'd not use it.

It might be that the difference is that you usually aren't looking thorugh a gunsight in a real plane trying to line something up.  If you did, it might seem bouncier.  I seem to recall the same feeling of bounciness when I flew at Air Combat USA, but it was so long ago that I can't recall for sure.

What you can do in the meantime is widen the rudder axis deadband a LOT. That way you won't apply rudder unless you really mean to.

You using gameport or USB gear?

No, that's just those AIs in offline mode.

Although it is possible to shear the wingtips off a 262 and still fly....matter of fact, it gets faster when ya do that ;)

Twisty is a Logitech Extreme 3D pro USB. The old FLCS Pro is, of course, gameport...with the olf AT keyboard interface plugs...ya know..the BIG ones . No throttle on that stick though.

you're new and ah..............

im basically new, havent played more than 30hrs total in the what 5 years of it?

The old airwarrior vs the older airwarrior. The way the AW manual was written made me want to ensure my skills were better than the older 'masters', i want to test that theory.:P

Yeah, I am familiar with that Logitech stick, its what I got for my wife to replace her worn out MS Sidewinder years ago at AW. What I told you (wide rudder deadbands) is key with it.

I recently replaced my gameport CH stuff with USB. Check Provantage.com, it wasn't but about $250 for Pro Throttle/Pro Pedals/Flightsick Pro. That's a sweet setup.

I'd let go the old gameport Pro Throttle (works perfectly) and Pro Pedals (little spiky, prolly want a new pot) cheap if you wanna mess around with gameport stuff (I don't recommend it).

Thanks you, but no. I have a set of gameport pro pedals that calibrate consistantly off to the left..have done so ever since I upgraded this puter years ago. Probably related to port speeds or something.

Heck, I still have an old, spiky WCS MkII lying around here.
