Title: Two TV images in one
Post by: Mickey1992 on July 14, 2005, 12:31:46 PM
OK, how is this done?  I can't find any info on it at the Sharp web site.  At first I thought she was holding up an empty frame but upon closer examination it appears not.

This would be so cool.  Me and the Mrs. could watch two different programs on the same TV!!

A Sharp employee shows off the reflected second display image of the electronic firm's 'Dual View' television. Sharp unveiled its 'Dual View' and 'Veil View' technologies which allow two different programs to air at the same time.

From one angle you see one display, from the other opposite angle you see the other display.

Something akin to how a prism works.

what about sound?

The only way I could see sound working is for one of the screens to use a wireless connection to headphones.  Sony had something like that for PiP (picture in picture) a while back.

I suppose you could also accomplish two separate sound channels via destructive interference of the sound, propagating one channel in one direction and the other in the opposite direction (left/right), emiting at the same time an inverse waveform of the opposite channel, thus cancelling it.

3D displays work the same way - they split the signal between eyes through directivity.

I wonder what the view is like from center.

i have this picture i got off the internet once, and it is of flowers or something....

but you when you "select" something, it gets darkened?

if you "select" this picture it shows a naked woman.

i don't know how it works, and i have never seen the same thing before, but it as got to have something to do with the pixels.

i'd post it, but im not that crazy LOL but i know no other way to show what i am talking about (2 images in the same picture)

Cool technology, but a completely useless application. Who the heck would want something like this (as a Two-in-One TV).

There might be some other, useful applications though. I just can't think of any right now.

Obviously I AM married. I just don't see any value in two people watching different program in the same room at the same time.

You either decide to watch something you both like together, or go to your room and watch whatever you want. I refuse to watch "Out of Africa" more than 15 times. It was boring the fifth time as much as it was the first time. :)

Just get a second TV and put it in a different room. That's what I do.

I find a PIP a marginal feature as well. I have it but never use it.

Sharp got smart and released another pic.

Just think, at one angle I could be surfing the AH BBS.  But at the other angle, the one seen by people entering my cube, it would appear that I was doing productive work!

I can see lots of commercial applications.

As I said one of the applications is 3D displays. You think those are useless?

In practise it's not possible CyranoAH.

Instead there are new techniques utilizing ultra high frequency transmitters which can beam the sound directly in a wanted direction.

Due to the physical properties of sound the lower the frequency, the less directivity sound has i.e. low sounds spread around the room while high sounds tend to travel in a more straight pattern.

Not surprisingly it is one of the biggest challenges in speaker building to get this behaviour in control.

Knowing this, scientists have developed a way to produce sound through ultrasonic frequencies which you can't normally hear at all, but which produce sound through interference when a subject is bombarded with them. Since very high frequencies are used the sound behaves more like a beam of light, travelling in a narrow beam.

So far they've managed to reproduce a vocal range starting from 1khz up which makes its use for music (or even less movies) hopeless. It does have use for commercial applications - they can make wall posters which scream at you while you pass them - and nobody else will be able to hear that.
