Here is a pictorial of my 4th of July ride on a B-24J. I was wishing all the Aces High pilots could be there with me (well, not all at once . . . and not the ones who shot me down the last couple of times in the MA, of course).

He's probably the same age as the guys were when they did the originial missions. :) The crew overall, including the pilot, are quite young. I think the pilot was Rob Collings, son of Bob Collings, founder of the Collings Foundation, which owns the plane. The other crew are, I think, volunteers for the foundation.

She was pretty jazzed about getting to fly in a B-24. I told her about the B-24, and she really liked listening to parts of The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany, by Stephen Ambrose, with me. He's the guy who wrote Band of Brothers and many other excellent WWII histories. (We got it as a book on tape through audible.com.)

Hey, that would be *awesome*! I'll take you guys out to dinner at your favorite restaurant. What did he fly in WWII?

Kinda got a little confused when it said it was the only flying b24 but then I say that they change paint schemes because I went with Delirium when Dragon and his Tail came to CT along with Nine o' Nine (b17) a he111, and Sentimental Joureny (b17). But why do they keep changing the paint schemes? Id rather see the b24 left in its original paint scheme.
-
Don't quote me on this, but they probably change it after a few years because the old scheme is getting worn off and they want a fresh look on it. Also, seeing as how its the only flyable one left, there are so many paint schemes that not changing it every once in a while would get old.
-
Nice pics and congrats.
I've been aboard that b24.
If you liked the flight experience in the B24 you would like the B17 flight experience even better.
I flew on the B17G "Yankee Lady", in my opinion the best maintained B17G (and I've seen 5 B17s)
Pictures and videos of my ride on the B17G and are on my website.

I would like to apply for "co-pilot" duties. I am 30 years old, have PVP with instrument and multi-engine rating and have over 1200 flight hours. I also have to shave. :)
I am currently employed but would sacrifice it join the team.
I can also land on carriers (virtual I might add)
I will work for Ramen soup.
-
I think they change the paint schemes every now and then both because the plane needs to be repainted every now and then and because they can also honor various aircraft and theaters of operation.
Jpeg, thanks for the pics of your B-17 ride and of various other aircraft!

Jerry flew Lib's and lanc's and is from England originally (his office is covered w/ pics) ,He Built his own Steel hulled sailboat and sailed to the states .. He owns a small metal shorts shop and restores old tractors and such .
( I ussually tell the boss im going to Jerry's and he always says "See ya in 2 hours" as for u'll be there that long draggin storys outta him)
he's alittle hard to get going , but once you get him talking the depth of his experiances is mind boggling .

I got an opertunity to visit the same B24 along with a B17 at North Las Vegas airport. I have a picture i took of her on my desktop wallpaper. Great pictures:aok

That's a great experience, isn't it Brooke. Worth every penny. I did it a couple of years ago. Of course, right after I transfered all of the pictures to my computer, the HD died and I lost all but one. Luckily, the one was my favorite picture:

Obviously, that was before it was repainted. Being 6'4", I didn't risk trying to get into either turret. I'm sure I would not have gotten out again.
When they come to IL, I'm thinking about sending my wife up.

Yippee... As much as I like the wind in my face, and as much as I love heights, I dont think I have the stones to hang my head out of a flying aircraft...

Howdy, Filth! Thanks! Yeah, that was a great book. I love Ambrose's WWII books. Another one that I hear is very good is Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II, by Thomas Childers.

Think that same B-24 was in SF bay area on Memorial Day weekend...I was playing in a softball game/kegger,,and that and a B17 flew low over us about 5 times,,,was a great day

I would have liked to seen the rest of the pics but I couldnt for all the drool on my monitor :D
Thats awesome bro! Glad you were able to take that once in a lifetime trip! Hopefully I'll be able to do the same if they ever get to my part of Texas!

Howdy, SarinGas. Thanks, and I'm glad you liked the pics. The Collings Foundation B-24 and B-17 are, I believe, in Texas each year during their yearly tour of the US. In the past, they have stopped in Houston, Dallas, and Austin. They also sometimes stop in Oklahoma and New Mexico. The cities they visit change from year to year -- the yearly schedules are here:
