Title: What happens if...
Post by: Kweassa on July 15, 2005, 04:06:14 PM
What happens, in real life, if you fly at 400mph with a bomb strapped on?

 Does the bomb rip off?

If so, can we have this modelled in the game?

Trying to stop a Typh or a P-51 with bombs strapped on, just ignoring every enemy and running straight to target field.. man, this is tough.. near impossible for most planes.

I've ripped the bombs right off the racks a few times when I forgot they were on there.

A few times, the wings went with the bombs...

The bombs don't rip off in here, unless the wings come off.

well... why don't you and your uberl33t tactical buddies setup a mid-point cap to catch these guys and force em to drop eggs since they'd be too far to run in for a suicide jabo?

I'm sure the weapons guys in here will have the definitive
answer, but 400 mph doesn't sound all that fast for bombs.

Modern jets cruise alot faster than that with external ordnance
and don't seem to have any trouble.  Obviously pulling Gs makes
a difference, but how often do you pickle your entire load on a
single pass?

Rino, modern gets use modern, streamlined, low-drag bombs. Like the mk.82s and so forth. WW2 still had large, high-drag bombs, and I think you'd run into some problems if you exceeded certain speeds (and/or would not be ABLE to exceed certain speeds due to drag).

Well thats why you can't hang a bomb just any old place.

You need bomb hard points capable of taking the load. Both of weight and drag, then distributing that load throughout the planes frame.

Even the bombs in WWII were fairly well designed.

Last, look at the Arado 234,  I've never heard of them breaking up in midair because the bombs ripped off.

Ahhh... right, the Ar234.

 Didn't think about that one.

So,if  there wasn't a speed limit, was there a G limit? Obviously pulling high Gs while bomb strapped on would be bad for the wings... but what about dropping bombs at neg Gs?

Just so you guys know, I wasn't kidding when I said that I've ripped the bombs off before, with and without the wings.

It happened a few times when I wasn't paying attention and got jumped.  Took my p51 into a 450 MPH dive and pulled way past 6g's to follow the guy up.  Suddenly I heard the bomb falling sound...
