As of today NAS OCEANA the east coast's only Navy Master Jet Base, was added to the BRAC list.
The commission could not have made a better decision. The encroachment of commercial businesses and suburban housing over the years has severley impacted the base.
My original post (which was NOT a flame by the way) stated that the civilian community will be severely impacted due to the massive loss of income into the local economy.
It is my OPINION that since we sailors are not treated well in this area, that this is a well deserved closure. That Virginia Beach will have to find someone else to leech off of.
My thanks to MP4 for showing me that my overzealous joy over this closure decision was maybe a little out of line in the way I had posted before.

Hehe... you wait. MP# is going to hit you for duplicating a thread.
:D
Didn't you and I discuss this already?
Of course, we could search for it, but oh yeah... that doesn't appear to work for some reason. ;)
p.s. I'm not whining about the search function... bring forth the TOD! :)

ASTAC, I was curious about that area...
What's the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in the area?
Average price of a 3 bedroom house?
Be interesting to see what they go for in 6 months.
When's the base scheduled for closeure? And, where they gonna send yer swabbie butt?

Rent really depends on where you want to live..I pay 1250 for a 3 bedroom townhouse about 6 miles south of the base...according to what they sell for in the area a TOWNHOUSE of the exact same model as mine goes for 230,000..
Most 3 bedroom houses I believe are between 190-250K depending on the part of town some as high as 350K.
Base closure will most likely take place over a 5 year period (based on how long it took to close an identical base in Jacksonville in the 90's). That is once the final list is approved by the President sometime in september.
As for me I'm not in an aviation rate so the closure doesn't really affect me. I work at Dam Neck which was made an annex of Oceana in 2000 and will either become an annex of NS Norfolk or revert back to an independent base.
I'm up for orders in November and will transfer next July anyway. I'm willing to go just about anywhere to get out of here.

Henh.. almost identical cost of living to here on Long Island.. rents and homes waaay to expensive.
Know whatcha mean about the way servicemen get treated.. they want yer money.. not you. Sucks. Hope yer next posting takes yah to a better place.. one thats less humid and has a community that doesn't dive into yer wallet.
G'luck, Swabbie!
