Title: Frame Rates are down in the new patch
Post by: AKFokerFoder+ on July 22, 2005, 01:00:29 AM
My frame rates were about 56-59 fps in full view before the patch.  Almost never under 45fps even in heavy smoke, fire, furballs etc.

Now they are down to about 20 or so, sometimes 12.  I can get back to 56fps in the medium view with some tinkering.

I have a Athlon 3400+ with a 256M ATI Radeon X700 graphics card.

Is this a bug or any suggestions?

I haven't done any testing yet, but subjectively the framerate seems much slower when looking at trees.

My frame rates are ususally in the high 40s down low and 74 (limited) when high or clear view in front.

New patch, frames down to mid 30s when down low, and dropping to single digits when I zoom in.

Dell XPS Gen 2
ATI Radeon 256M PCI Express video
2G DDR2 RAM

I have noticed that my framerate on the runway when first starting the game after a reboot is 10 (used to be 60s-80s).  However, so far, if I then exit the game and restart, the frame rates return to normal.

getting some slowing issues, and noticed that the textures on the trees seem to have something different going on with the texture - sorta like "noise" or "static"...if that makes sense.

ATI here as well.

Just for the sake of comparison, my Geforce card has registered an improvement of around 6-10 fps all the way round.

Any more questions? Fair warning..be prepared to upgrade repeatedly.

1 gig ram, 6800 ultra 256mb video running at 425 mhz, MSI K8n Diamond motherboard and an athalon 3500 processor... cant even come close to running the game wide open.... 15 frames per second because of the trees when I'm low.  Something wrong with that.

Yes, and the problem exist on your PC.

Mine: 3.2Ghz P4, 1gb RAM, gForce 6600gt 128, FOXCONN MB I get 60 in the air and 40s/50's skimming the trees.

You shuld be running no more that 13 or so processes when running AH, preload textures & skins.

What texture size and resolution are you running?

I run nearly 50 processes but how can I get rid of the ones I don't need without causing problems?

My rig can easily handle Pacific Fighters on Perfect settings but it gets mini-pauses, I suspect from processes.

If anyone could help with this aspect, a many thanks.

Around 20 is considered "normal" and healthy Sigma.  50 is incredible.  I have 12 or 13 when I boot to play AH.

Also, if you visit the tweakguides page, make sure you check on ways to optimize your video card while you are there.  Might not need it, but why not look?  :)

I followed some of the directions, but now I'm down to 48 processes...

Honestly, I'm in need of help, I'm worried on what to do and I'm sure this is the source of my problems with all the processes I'm running.

I've tried the links but I'm confused as to where to go exactly.

One thing I can suggest is this.  What kind of programs do you have running at startup?  Do you know what programs you WANT running at startup?  Look at what icons are loaded in your taskbar on the bottom right of your screen.  Do all of them look like stuff you NEED running at startup?

Many different kinds of programs will (when you install them) tell Windows that by default, they need to load some portion of themselves into memory.  If you have a digital camera, the software often wants to run any time the computer starts up, so when you plug in the camera the software responds instantly instead of the default Windows software.  You can start these programs manually.  Killing the auto start functions does NOT in any way impair the operation of the program itself.  You simply arent loading it into memory every time you boot anymore.

Start in your MSConfig program.  On your start menu, go to Run and type msconfig in the box.  When the System Configuration Utility pops up, go to the last tab labelled "Startup".  Look through there and see if anything looks familiar.  Alot of them will be undecipherable, but there will be obvious ones as well.  Anything that starts with REAL is for the RealPlayer software.  Uncheck those.  That stuff doesnt need to load at bootup.  The software responds just fine on its own.  Any other lines that have programs with familiar names, anything you are sure isnt part of your "necessary" setup, uncheck it.  And as a hint, you can uncheck every single box on there and the computer will startup fine.  But you may disable programs like the anti-virus or firewall that way.  Once you shut off what you are sure of, reboot your computer.  Now see how many processes you are down to.  You can also go through those icons on the taskbar.  Run  your mouse pointer over them and let the names of the programs pop up if you are unfamiliar with them.  Right clicking on an icon in the taskbar usually gets you some options, including a way to shut down the program thats running.

As a last resort, if you see things in MSConfig or anywhere else and you dont know what the file does, GOOGLE it.  Just type the file name in the search bar, and hit search.  You will usually get hits that will tell you what hte file is and what it does and where it came from.  This should tell you if its safe to disable.  And remember, disabling isnt deleting.  You dont have to delete files (usually) to disable them.  You can always re-enable something if you find you want it running after all.
