Yeah, it happens. A few Olympics ago a diver split his head open on the platform doing a similar dive. When he hit the water it looked like a shark attack there was so much blood in the water.

Oh yeah, now I remember, it was Looganis right after he came out of the closet. Big AIDS scare, they had to drain the pool before the other divers would use it again.

They must have drained it real quick like,

Louganis returned to finish his qualifying dives 35 minutes after suffering a cut that required temporary sutures. Following the preliminary round, Louganis went to a hospital and got five stitches. Days later he won yet another gold medal and become the first diver in history to successfully defend his Olympic springboard title.

Wow, great memory! I was pulling this out of my head as I "sort of" remembered it.
