If he wants to play Safety then send him down here for a few weeks in the summer to some real football camps and we will get him so hyped up on football that those candy butt kids up in the Pacific Northwest won't know what hit 'em. For starters teach him how to play out of a standing stance if you want a safety. Otherwise drop for a noob thats not a bad 3 point lineman stance.
:D

Oh and get that crazy looking Revo helmet off his head. Give him an old fashioned Air or something alot cheaper. Must be another one of those Washington area fads....My kid just got a Schutt Youth DNA helmet so I know what you were thinking.

He's got middle linebacker eyes.
Judging from the size Im guessing Mighty mite?
Looks kinda small for a Jr Pee Wee.
They started hitting yet?
Reschkes right though. Not a half bad 3 point.
Have him bend his knees just a tad more and move his right foot back just a few inches.
Good looking kid though:aok

Cool Rip. Im guessing its your kid. :)

This is his first year of full contact. Not sure what position he'll play, he WANTS to play LB or safety. He's green, won't see much playing time, but will see a ton of practice beginning monday, 5 days a week, 2 hours a day. I've got my Truck camper stocked with beer and burgers for those practices after work (for me! :p)

Monday as in today or next week on the 1st? We get our kids started on the Aug 1 with a 2.5 hours in 90 degree + 100% humidity. At least that is whats in the forecast...MAN I love football practice in the south...always hot and God only lets it rain around the field never on it when your there for practice. :D

August 1st. Weather here is typically 75-80 degrees. Personally I prefer the milder weather, the kids get to enjoy the sport rather than to dred it. Its all about having fun, isn't it?
Our "typical" Northwest summer (one of the major plusses of living here!)
TODAY...MOSTLY SUNNY EXCEPT AREAS OF MORNING LOW CLOUDS. HIGHS 75 TO 80. LIGHT WIND BECOMING NORTHWEST NEAR 10 MPH THIS AFTERNOON.
TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLEAR. LOWS 50 TO 55. NORTH WIND TO 10 MPH.
TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...MOSTLY CLEAR. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 70S TO MID 80S. LOWS IN THE 50S. NORTH WIND TO 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY...MOSTLY CLEAR. LOWS IN THE 50S. HIGHS 75 TO 80.
THURSDAY NIGHT...BECOMING CLOUDY. LOWS IN THE 50S.
FRIDAY...MORNING CLOUDS...THEN MOSTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE 70S.
FRIDAY NIGHT...BECOMING MOSTLY CLOUDY. LOWS 50 TO 55.
SATURDAY...MORNING CLOUDS...THEN PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS 70 TO 75.
SATURDAY NIGHT...BECOMING CLOUDY. LOWS 50 TO 55.
SUNDAY...MORNING CLOUDS...THEN PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE 70S

not a bad 3 point for Oline, but Dline is where it's at.
He needs to square his stance no more then shoulder with apart. I take it he's right handed so left foot 5 inches in front of right, and get him on his toes.
get him some gloves and some eye black and he's good to go. :aok
tell him good luck!

Yea, Dline is necessary for the long bomb and gridiron tackel of the off-field gatorade winder.

Had a nice little post in responce but lost it when I hadta reboot cause my mouse locked up for some reason.
To summerise.
His playing time will depend more on him and how well he progresses. He may pick it right up.
Coaches typically will go with performance over experiance so as long as he is well diciplined does what the coaches want him to do and likes to crash into things as hard as he can he'll do just fine :)
Also there is the minimum play rule. Each kid has a minimum amount of playing time depending on the size of the team. The fewer kids on the team the larger the minimum play time the kids get. And vise verse.
The absolute minimum I know used to be 3 plays for a full squad.
The bigger kids usually play the line. Usually, but there are exeptions
I had one kid was one of the smallest kids on the team but he was phenominal on defencive line. Absolutely lightning quick off the ball did everything we asked of him right the first time. VERY intence player. I used to joke with his father that he was going to grow up to be either a superstar or a psychopath. LOL
Good kid though.
But he was the exeption so unless your kid is in that larger catagory he should get to play his position
I'm betting linebacker on D and possibly either a back or end on offence
LOL those 5 days are fun. Dont be surprised during the season that on top of the 3 nights of practice saturday mornings are thrown in too.
With beer and burgers you should be very popular among the other fathers.
If your going to work with your kid on your own time. Work on whatever the coaches are working with him on. Or better yet ask the coaches what you can work with him on.
Just be on the same page as the coaches and dont develop your own program or you could hurt more then help him.
Things you can do now to help give him a leg up is teach him things like the positions, the holes maybe some agility & footwork drills
Running forwards, sideways & backwards without falling down.
that sort of thing
Theres alot of stuff out there Im just throwng this up for example
Footballdrills.com (http://www.footballdrills.com/main.php?p=2)
Most of all. just let him have fun and dont let him get discouraged.
From the looks of him I think he'll do fine:aok
-
Rip, that's priceless.
-
Yep that first time in pads is funny time to watch those kids. After they get popped by someone who has played before a few times they finally start figuring out what it takes.
Similar to what Dred says two seasons ago we had a 5 year old that came out to play and he weighed all of 40 pounds but we put him onthe defensive line once we realized no one could touch him. That season he had 14 1/2 sacks and 26 1/2 tackles for loss. I say 1/2 because alone he could not put anyone down but generally he held on long enough for someone else to get in and lay the wood to them.
Oh and when teaching him to block forget all that old school stuff about forearms and chicken wing blocking. Get him to using his hands and in the long run he will thank you for it. Just make sure he stays in tight on the chest and not on the shoulders. Its all in the technique.

D Line is da bomb fer sure.
He may want to check on the eye black. Some programs dont allow it.
Oh and since he's in the northwest. He should run out ASAP and pick up a HotHead (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002BRX20/sr=1-1/qid=1122312228/ref=sr_1_1/103-7252651-9968654?%5Fencoding=UTF8&n=1036682&s=apparel&v=glance) For when it starts getting cold. Which I am assuming happens pretty early up there.
Super warm and super thin so it fits right under the helmet without having to adjust the fit.
Worth every penny

My old coach use to call it the dolphin phin instead of chicken wing. He was missing a finger and he would give us numbers on the plays so when he said 2 he would put 1 and 1/2 fingers up, confused the hell out of us. He was kind of crazy, i hope he don't play this game

If only I had known I could have used my hands when blocking in high school for something other than cheerleaders boobs and catching footballs. I definetely would have gotten a better scholarship offer. :D

don;t know where you played,. but it was illegal to use hands while blocking in my HS league.
you'd get a personal foul, and a second offense, ejected from the game..... then have a coach never want to play you again.
something about injuries or something. don't know the whole reason.

It wasn't illegal it just was not taught at the high school level in the late 80's. I graduated from high school in 1989 and the first thing I learned that fall in college was to forget about forearm blocking and use my hands. It took a long to time realize that it was better. However on defense they always taught us to use our hands and play off the blocker that way. Hell theres no telling how many sweeps I could have gotten the DE turned back inside in high school to get the back on the corner faster.
Now its a very common teaching point that starts in peewee football to punch block with an open hand and "hold" inside the shoulder pads.
-
I believe there has been a rule change regarding O-line blocking and the definition of holding since I played in the 70's. If I get the urge I'll look it up. I played end, but we were never taught to use our hands to block.. even in high school.

Keep me posted on what you guys are doing. Plus we may be having a thanksgiving football tournament down here. We are looking into it now and getting sponsorships lined up and looking to invite a few teams from all over the nation if possible. But at any rate the tourney is very early infancy and may not get off the ground.

Reschke, where'd you play? If you don't mind me asking. A bunch of my high school team mates (I graduated in '71) ended up playing for Bama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Troy State, Kansas State, and Arkansas.
I a bench warmer, myself.
-
I was on the Juco team at Marion Military Institute for two years fall '89 and fall '90 (only played one due to injury). Then went to UAB and played three more seasons but was there from 91-94. I had ACL reconstruction after the '91 season then destroyed my ankle two weeks into pre-season in '93 and sat out that season before finishing up in '94.
Juco ball was tougher than UAB by a longshot. UAB was a cakewalk for those of us who came from Juco programs into that beginners atmosphere back when we first started out the program there.
-
I graduated from UAB '81. Sorta follow events there, still.
Rip, didn't mean to hijack yer thread.

First day of practice is in the books and its looking good so far. Except for the DA coach who tore his knee up jogging over from the other field for introductions.......ME! I go see the orthopaedic surgeon in the morning and if it needs surgery its going on the waiting list just like a bunch of other stuff.

Bah! slap some mud and spit on it and get back out there ya big sissy LOL
Seriously though. YEEOWCH!
How the hell did you manage that?
-
oh ****.
Sympathy pains Reschke. The damn thing isn't engineered right - tear the thing getting out of the car wrong.
Which tendon this time?
You had the terrible triad a few years back too, eh?
-
Hell I took two steps into the light jog and POW...BAMM...ZOKKK!
I nearly let those parents hear a few choice words come popping out of my mouth but instead I let the ball cap and clipboard fly about 50 feet!
I still don't know what the heck happened but it felt funny because all kinds of stuff inside the knee just sort of felt loose all of a sudden.
Yeah Oct I had a monster of an injury back in 1991 when my ACL decided to pull a little over 1/4" of my femur off with it when it wanted to snap. Funny thing is the damn ligament never broke just the bone and as a result of that it destroyed the inside of my knee. I'll let you know what happened after tomorrows evaluation.
-
Just returned from first practice, I see now why this team won the championship last year, these coaches are tough on the kids! My kid loves it! :aok

Sounds like we need to get those boys down here to Alabama to see if they really know football or the coaches just cherry picked the area and smoked everyone else.

We missed signing up for the Sumner football team in March, ended up waiting in line for 1.5 hours to sign up for the next closest town that had a junior football program. From this program has come a few NFL quarterbacks that I'm sure you;d remember...(Brock Huard, Damon Huard, Jim Zorn, Billy Joe Hobert) anyway, 150 kids showed up for 40 roster spots...goood thing we showed up 1.5 hours in advance last April!

Sounds like what I hear they do in Texas.
It has been explained to me that because Dallas is so large an area they have a bunch of teams.
And what they do is cherry pick the biggest and best kids and put them on certain teams. Basiucally creating all star teams leaving the other kids to either play on the lesser teams or not play at all.
No offence to Texans and if it isnt true then it isnt.
But all I know is, some years ago when my sons undefeated team which made it to Pop Warner Super Bowl Week in Disney world they ended up playing and loosing to the eventual champs from one of the Dallas teams.
Now on our team we had kids of all sizes ranging from those struggling to keep their weight down to those struggling to make the minimum weight.
and thats pretty much what we saw with every single other team they faced right on through the regionals.
But on the Dallas team. Not a single kid was more then two or three pounds under the max weight limit and almost half were just a pound or less under.
Our guys made a good showing of it but there was just no way they could compete with the size difference. LOL I remember one play specifically where this huge Dallas running back literally dragged 3 of our guys, Including two of our best defencive players 5 yards down the feild before they could get him down.
After the game and over the coarse of the rest of the week we were talking about it with some folks who explained what I said above to us. From several different people in at different times.
Now if thats the way it is then thats the way it is.
Just doesnt seem very fair and I know your not allowed to do that sort of thing here. Where they only way you dont play for the town or area you live in is if that team is full. Then and only then can you go to and play for another town or area. And your not allowed to pick and choose who is on the team. Its all first come first serve by rule.
Just seems sad that anyone would be that desperate to win they would have to stoop to such levels.
All in all everyone had a good time and we were all just happy to make it there considering it was only our towns second year witha Pop Warner team.
Was a hell of a year which included one of the very best games I've ever seen played at ANY level bar none against a very good East Orange team where at one point the guys gave the ball up on our own 4 yard line and held them and we eventually won 6-0 on the last play of the game with 2 seconds left.
The cheering and chanting of "DE-FENCE" from the crowd got so loud on both sides that the cheerleaders stopped cheering. LOL
Hell of a game.
-
Oh Reschke, the southern football boys would kick arse on the northern football boys, you guys live and breath it...we actually have school as our first priority, sports is second priority :p (j/k)
-
My Dad's younger brother coached the large school division varsity HS football here in So. Cal for many years. He won the his league championship a few times and was well known in the area.
He eventually quit coaching and moved to Plano, Texas. He loved the football atmosphere down there, but he always maintained that the skill level was higher in California. It makes sense only because there is more people here.
I played High school ball against the greatest safety ever and the greatest OL ever. Well IMHO, Ronnie Lott and Anthony Munoz are about the best ever to play their positions. Both were in our league at the same time.
-
I'll agree that Ronnie Lott was the best safety ever.
As for school first just so you know if a kid doesn't make the grade in his classes we as a coaching staff will sit him for one game. Our teachers give us a weekly update on them and only because we have a very open school system and we ask for it.
One example is last season my son took his new Gameboy SP to school that he bought with his birthday money. Well to make a long story short he got caught playing the gameboy in class and his teacher took it up for one week then called me at work. When I got home he was grounded from going to football practice that evening and was suspended from playing in the game the next day but had to wear his jersey and stand on the sidelines. Then when the Gameboy came home it was put away for 2 months. Well since then he doesn't take the gameboy out of the house unless its a long road trip.
-
Heh, he's finally found a sport that kicks his butt! But, apparently he's loving it. Loving it really isn't the right term...he's obsessed with it!
A Shot from last night during one of his water breaks. It was 94 deg. when they began practice (foothills of the Cascade mountains are usually 5-8 degrees hotter than near Puget sound) Still not hot by "southern standards" ;)

Here is a link to our city's youth football teams website. http://www.vhyf.com
I have been working on it a little at a time and should have it all up and finished before the first game which will be the first week in September. When I get some pictures from my wife of practices and all that then I will upload them onto the site so we can have a weekly practice update.
-
Thanks for the link! Here is our website:
http://eteamz.active.com/puyalluproughriders/index.cfm?
FWIW, I'll be the team photographer this year. Assembing all the pics for the website (for our team), and creating a movie for all the parents at the end of the year.

Gordon has been in "training camp" for 13 days now. Last night the coaches started "placing" kids where they think they should play as we approach the first game of the year (Aug. 27th)
Now mind you, returning or "experienced" players are placed on the first string, if they're good (and usually they are good when compared to the 1st year players) Gordon was spending a lot of time as a linebacker early in training camp. A lot of first year players like Gordon play defense at this level, as there is not as much to learn as there is on offense.
The previous two nights during 4 vs 4 drills, the coaches had him lined up as the full back blocking for the half back. Gordon put one of his "defensive" teammates on his back while blocking for the half back. Two coaches attended the kid on his back (got the wind knocked out of him) while another coach was back slapping and high fiving Gordon (A bitter-sweet moment)…..
Last night was different...they informed him he would work with the offense as a full back! He was so danged excited! He worked with both the 1st string offense, and the 2nd string offense, helped punch a hole that was a 10 yard gainer for the half back on one play in scrimmage. He's pretty pumped up about the whole thing(and obviously so is his Daddy!) He's a different boy than he was two weeks ago, the football discipline has made quite a transformation.
-
Gordon has been issued Number 35, back up Fullback. Its very rare for a 1st year player to make offense...there were only 2 first-year players made the offense this year, the rest are on defense.
I've uploaded a preview of the football movie that I'm making for all the parents at the conclusion of the season. This is just a 160 resolution movie for the sake of size(1.5m), and it only shows our football camp, I haven't finished the "The Coaches" section at the end (just started it...) I would estimate that its 25% finished. It should be about 12 minutes long when finished. Currently it is about 4 min long.

"I'm betting linebacker on D and possibly either a back or end on offence":D
Admittedly not a very hard bet to win though.
Thats great he's doing so well.
Nothing "bittersweet" about knocking the other kid on his butt and knocking the wind out of him. Thats sugar sweet!
I used to like to tell my players to "hit em so hard that when they go down they have snot bubbles comming out of their nose"
Silly talk like that never ceased to jack the kids up while making them chuckle at the same time of the thought of it.
Not dirty play mind you. Just good hard hitting
Play like that will have him playing the majority of the time rather then being a "minimum play kid"
Not suprised to hear the football dicipline is making a difference.
We used to get parents all the time telling us about a transofmation in their kids behavior.
Always made me proud to hear parents telling me they noticed a positive difference in behavior in school as well as at home.
One of the most common terms I heard used was "focused"
THE most important thing is he is loving it. And thats allways great to hear.

I've coached little league as an assistant but not football. You guys have my respect, there is alot more to that game, and discipline is crucial. Funny you mention the school part, I keep preaching to my sons that hard work and "never quit" (Rule #5 on their team) will carry over naturally into their academic and work lives. Not sure if they understand this yet, but never hurts to plant the seed early in life.

Havent coached football in a number of years now. I do miss it though. especially this time of year.
I'd get back into it but one of the guys that runs the local program here and I have. Shall we say a personality conflict.
His, being one that likes to try to intimidate everything and everyone around him. And mine being one that doesnt tolerate intimidation tactics very well..at all (kinda hard to beleive huh LOL)
On top of that we just out and out dont like each other.
Lemme put it to you this way.
The last year I was coaching parents were taking giving odds as to how long it was going to be before he and I were rolling around on the ground going at it tooth and toenail. LOL
While we did come close a few times. It never did come to pass. (Never in front of the kids though)
Really just a nasty guy. People in general dont like him and only tolerate him because he is one of the guys that runs the program and as such cant be gotten rid of.
How nasty?
The year after I left. The man was banned from attending his stepsons highschool games for a year because of his antics.
Good football coach though. He knows his stuff and everyone on his team plays more then the minimum whenever possible. Cant and wont take that away from him.
He' just very abrasive to everyone around him.
(yes even moreso then me)
So for the good of the program I'll stay out of it for now and just wait till he either retires from it or gets run over by a truck or something. Then maybe I'll come back
Preferably as an assistant. I have no desire to be a head coach.
Went that route once and never again. Head coaches have to be part coach and part politition (with the parents)
And Im no politition LOL

We had our jamboree game yesterday and found out a bunch about our kids. My son is the starting left side DE and also starts on offense at Tight End. He was pumped up because he had three tackles (2 for losses), a sack and a forced fumble. We tied the team we played in the jamboree but in the process learned that we can stop them and we can run on them. It just doesn't help matters that we all think they are the team to beat for the league championship.
Yesterday was tough because it was only 97 with 100% humidity and our game was in the middle of the day. A buddy of mine who is a trainer at Samford University here said in their scrimmage yesterday their field temp was 146°.

I understand what you mean Dred. We formed a board for our program this past winter and had to take over from the guy who had run this for the last 15 years. As a result we discovered we still have about 2-3 years of work to do to make this program not only profitable but change the image within the community. I was asked to step in and put my name as the head coach instead of the guy who has coached this group for the last two years. As a member of the board I would have given up my position to take over for anyone else but this guy. The only reason is I know that our coach has his heart and mind in the right place. So I still assistant coach and that is where I will be until my youngest son gets to playing in a couple of years; then I will step down and start coaching him from the head coach side.

Yep its his third year of playing and for the first two he was a starter at tight end but only because he knew what I expected but he never kept the starting end position. He would go into camp and play lights out but still never quite gave it his all during the season. With the way I coach and have coached on several levels if you are the starter at the end of preseason you better keep showing me that you can still be the starter 3-4 games into the season. That includes being a leader on the practice field and during drills.

I'll probably get banned for booting a really old thread...but, Dred made me do it!
5 years later...my son is now a freshman, 1st string RB and LB, just like Dred said he thought he'd be. :)
His team is undefeated....7-0. 110 yards a game average for him this year. :)
