Title: Li-1: A goon with guns?
Post by: Simaril on July 25, 2005, 09:34:06 AM
Was goofing around with an old copy of Il-2 (the original 2001 version.) They inlcude an Li-1, or was it Li-2 (I'm at not-really-working work), whcih was an export bomber version of the DC-3. Had 2 side gunners, and a top turret. Looked around on the internet last night, so couldnt get more info.

Anyway, it got me thinking: would it be fun to have this in the game? It would be useless as a bomber, bu thaving a goon with defensive fire could make the capture/ goon hunting job a bit more interesting. Throw out a goon and a couple decoys, so the swarm attaking the generic "DC-3" icon would be split at first. And the having any stinger at all would make the approach to the apparen t"goon" a bit more cautious.

It would be a cinch to model, and if it only got used some it stil would be a simple addition. And, the twist of uncertain identitficaltion could turn goon hunting into a shell game that might be a lot of fun.....

The Japanese DC-3's were also armed.  Can't recall their name right now.  Our code name for them was Tabby.

Finland used DC-2 as a bomber. Just 1 sortie... but anyway.

With the little I have found out, it appears that the Li-2 was Licensed rather than exported. The Soviet engineer in charge of the project converted measurements to metric, so there may be minor differences in the airframe -- but only tohse differences present with converting 3/8" tp 0.95 cm for example.

Armament was ~7.9mm MG in each side opening, and a top turret with a single ~7.9mm MG. Up to 2000KG bombs were carried on external racks.

It look and handle like a bus, and it would move about that fast -- but it could be fun to have!!

Ive been wanting a gun just 1 gun thats all I ask for in the nose so at least I have some defense being able to outturn las and other planes and would be able to kill them instead of making them crashing into the ground (made a couple 262s do that :).  Ill be glad to pay a couple perks for just 1x50 cal in the nose with maye 500 rounds.

IIRC it was on the right side - I've missed it too.
