No yah won't. You'll wax the BOQ floors with a toothbrush and a q-tip. Then mebbe, if yah show iniative aqnd skiilz, you'll be allowed to supervise the chow line on Sunday mornings.
Then after a year or so of that, they'll send you to Diego Garcia to be a Mail Clerk where you'll discover Santa's missing mail sack and be promoted to JAG clerk.
You might see a jet, or a computer; but that'll be on your one hour off a week when you get to use the bases Atari 5400 to send yer mom an email. The Jet will be the screen saver. ;)

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports and skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign of for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet
In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)
They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit
If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new seamen fast
Maybe you are too young
To join up today
Bout don't you worry 'bout a thing
For I'm sure there will be
Always a good navy
Protecting the land and sea
In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)
They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit
Who me?
They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit
But, but but I'm afraid of water.
Hey, hey look
Man, I get seasick even watchin' it on TV!
They want you, they want you in the navy
Oh my goodness.
What am I gonna do in a submarine?
They want you, they want you in the navy
-
Yup.. and you'll have the gratitude and respect of all us veterans should you make it thru boot and AIT. Who knows, mebbe even the ladies when yer off on Liberty Call.

Unless the recently changed it..it is AE..more of actual wiring in the airframe..AT (Aviation electronics tech) does the actual equipment. Hope I didn't burst your bubble..Working at and around NAS Oceana most of my friends (that aren't OS's) are AE's and AT's..a few AO's but AO's aren't known to be able to hold a good intelligent conversation for long :D
-
ASTAC, For now I am a general AV until I finish my A school, then I will be either a AE or an AT. But I was just stating in general for those who know less about the job.

Great Lakes is that way. And you're right about the subs. Remember, there are only two kinds of ship: Subs and Targets.
-
Great Lakes '86...
I agree with Swager. Submarines were the only reason I joined the Navy.
-
I was thinking of being a nuke. But I dont think I would beable to handle being underwater for months at a time.

There are 2 types of ships in the Navy.
Submarines & Targets.
-
Wow, me too. Co. 280, August - October, 1986.
I went in Feb '86. I don't recall Co. I would have to dig through some boxes to find the old pics.
I got out in '92. (STS)
-
RedTop, The only targets the U.S. Navy has are little blips on the radar screen beyond the horizon. :D

Remember your CC's? Mine were ICC Couture and RMC Baldwin. Never will forget those 2. Had a great time during boot camp as well.

aint that the fluff'n truth....
There is absolutly one thing I NEVER new how to operate nore cared about prior to elisting in the Marines back in the 90's and that was this device:
to the "old corps" Marines I served with said this one was High-tech and they called us "pampered"
"THIS IS MY CAN OF JOHNSON'S PASTED WAX. THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT BUT THIS ONE IS MINE. JOHNSON'S PASTE WAX IS MY BEST FRIEND. WITH OUT IT, THE FLOORS ARE DULL. WITH OUT ME, SOMONE ELSE WILL HAVE TO CLEAN THEM. I WILL WAX ON BETTER THAN HIM. I WILL BUFF MY WAX TRUE. I WILL MAKE MY FLOOR SHINE. BEFORE GOD I SWEAR THIS CREED THAT THE GUNNY WOULD BE HAPPY FOR THE VIRGIN MARY TO TAKE A DUMP ON MY SHINY FLOOR"
"these are som FnA potatos mom can I have some fluff'n more"

Good luck Blue! :aok

Diablo, I was an STS (79-85) Best rate in the Navy. Well, it was during the Cold War.
The Navy was a great experience, even though Hang says it means I'm gay!! :)
BlueJ1, while in Boot, try to get into an area of responsibility that gives you some leadership or special job. Like company clerk, MMA, Athletic Petty Officer, platoon leader. IT keeps you out of the crappy jobs during service week!!
Well, I guess I better ask. Does Navy Boot still have service week??
Its been 25 years!!
-
My father was an STG equivalent during the Korean War, SN3 (Sonarman Third).
Yes, they still have service week. Since I was Laundry Petty Office I got to hang out in the barracks all week.
Gunslngr, when we had service week we had to wax the entire barracks floor with wax. By hand. Using HOT water and sponges. Actually, THEY had to. As the LPO it was my job to supervise, hehehehe....
Good luck Blue, enjoy your time. My first 3 years I was an FTN'er, my last year I straightened up and flew right and it paid off big time.
Best decision I ever made. Second was to go back in as a reservist.
-
I was told that since I am a E-3 that I will most likely be a RPOC. Recruit Petty Officer In Charge. Is service week really that bad ?
-
Basically, it doesn't matter what your rate is going in. The CCs will make a decision on RPOC and ARPOC based on what they see the first week. I wa a stickman. I carried one of the flags and we practiced our tulips off so we wouldn't look foolish at graduation. At service week I was in the mess hall galley. IT SUCKED!! Worked my bellybutton off, while the squad leaders and platoon leaders got some cozy service week job.
Ya see squad and platoon leaders dont lead squat!! They actually follow the stickmen because the stickmen are out front carrying the flags. Stickmen get screwed, so dont volenteer to be one! ITs been 25 years and I am still upset about that!! Freakin Slackers!! They may have changed things, I dont know.
Do they still have the Little Chicken and Big Chicken thing going there?
Anyways, when do you leave? You're gona be a raisin!!! Raisins are new to Boot Camp. Ya can tell buy their hair cut!
-

I am proud to say I am BlueJ's uncle.
I was there an hour and a half after he arrived in this world and was also honored to be named his god father. Because we live half a state apart I have never been able to be as close as I would really like over the years but I have watched as he has grown into a very responsible and mature young man regardless of the troubles of life that have been thrown in his path.
I started in the old AW days and progressed to AH. I introduced BlueJ to AH and its community in the hopes that if not actual face time then we could spend some AH fly time together. It seemed to make sense what with our commonality of interest in war and history. That originally lasted about 2 weeks before he had learned more than I had in a year. He was off and running and I was working on more gray hairs.
I have not served in the military, have a decent job a wife and 3 kids. When he told me he had enlisted there was a few seconds of reflection on my part, but only a few. The committment and sacrifice he and as well as all others make to join the military and support this country of ours is something that is not appreciated and congratulated enough.
No doubt you will have some bumps in the road. You will learn, sometimes the hard way, as all others have. I think you will also develop a unique bond with others in this country who have been proud to serve both past and present. You will do well I'm certain.
BlueJ
PS: Tell Mom I said Hi.
