Title: Bought my first handgun

Smith & Wesson .38 Special Revolver...I liked the weight of the gun and the low recoil when fired. I also liked the price ($259). What I really liked was the pull, aim, fire ability - no safeties to worry about. All this and it looks cool too. :aok

You know the democrats/liberlas..want that gun banned..and actaully is in soem cities/states..

They call it a "saturday night Special"...supposedly its cheap ..small ..and criminals would have them....oh yaa..and its very dangerous..it can shoot by itself ..and may explode becuase its a cheap price..lololol

But if your just soem poor schmuk..you should be buying a much larger and expensive handgun. Poor people shouldn tbe able to defend themselves..or have fun shooting an in expensive gun

Problme with the so called "saturday night specials' the majority of cops used them as back ups..lolololo

I have two suggestions.. One, I strongly urge you to join the NRA and Two, there are a myriad of custom grips for that firearm made buy dozens of companies.. if your friends have some laying around then borrow every set you can get your hands on.

I am fond of eagle grips (they are on the web).

Make your own grip. We did with our Police Special. The grip just comes so natural, the gun is so easy to shoot.

Secondly get lots of ammo and practice practice practice. Practice a bit wiht the ammo you expect to use for "serious" purposes and it will shoot to a different point of aim from the practice ammo.

Lastly look at after market grips. I like Pachmeyers but there are a number of makes that do well. Check them out and use what feels good to you. If it makes it more comfortable to shoot and your accuracy improves that's a good thing.

Enjoy your new sport. Now if they have a concealed weapon course in your area go to it. Even if you do not intend to get the permit, go to the class and get the education. Even more important than knowing how to shoot is knowing when NOT to shoot.

Already fired off a bunch of rounds after I bought it. Very smooth recoil and the trigger offers just the right amount of resistance. Its definately an up close and personal weapon though. Any thoughts on optimum range on this one though? I wouldn't suspect it'd be effective much more than 10-15 yards with the barrel being so short.

That weapon is capable of consistantly hitting a man sized target at 100 yards with a little practice. Not that you'd use it for anything but target practice at that distance; it can be done, and it isn't as hard to do as you might think. Gotta use some Kentucky windage though 'til you learn how it shoots.

My brother had a .38 special Charter Arms 5 shot that looked like yours (2 and a half inch barrel), and I was able to hit a milk jug with it at about 50+ yards back in the day when my eyesight was good.

Used to shoot pistols at long ranges (in old borrow pits) to see what they would do. One time we set up an ironing board at 250-300 yards and were able to hit it using a 9mm Walther P-38.

Most ranges nowadays won't allow 100 yard pistol shooting, and the days of borrow pit shooting are a thing of the past. We had fun while it lasted. Ahhh, to be young again. Plinking was more fun than paper target shooting by far.
