I just got done watching "over there" the new series that premiered on FX channel tonite and it left me wondering.....Did hollywood run out of TV actors?
Some of them were good and convincing because they looked like regular people put into a crappy situation. The rest looked like hollywood actors that got turned down for extra roles on JAG.
In addition the writing/dialog was terrible. I was really disappointed.
The spoiler they showed of the rest of the season looked better than the entire pilot eppisode.
There were definatly some things that were true to life in the military.
The idiot LT
The cheating wife
I really hope this season get's better.

In the writer's conference room:
Writer One: Did we forget any stereotypes?
silence
Writer two: Yeah, why don't we bring in some water melons!
silence
Writer One: You idiot...
pause
Writer One: there aren't any watermelons in Iraq!

yup I'd say that's dead on balls accurate.

I was less than impressed. Definitely not Steven Bochco's best work. Absolutely has room for improvement. Altho, I thought Eric Palladino as Sgt. "Scream" was one of the bright spots.

yea I liked him if he'd had better writers. Some of his lines were way cheazy
-
It was a heck of alot better than I expected it to be from the advertisements. I thought I'd get some cheezy one liners and some RL video out-takes thrown in here and there. It has room to improve, but I spent the entire hour watching TV. Thats something for me. I'll give it a chance.
-
yeah not impressed.
was it the quarter back poor kid that lost his leg?
-
Yup, 22 TD's last year...
-
Only question I got is why watch that when you can watch the real thing. Check out Gunner Palace for a good video on life in Iraq.
-
I watched a south park rerun.
edit: it was the one where cartman gets the town rised up over mel gibsons the passion, that was some funny ****.

I wasted an hour of my time watching it. I should have believed the review the Iraq vets gave it in the Seattle times.
-
Yeah, the moment the dude said he got a scholarship for football, I said he was gonna lose a leg.
-
Didnt like it at all.
-
Michael Cudlitz ("Bull" from Band of Brothers) is going to be on next week's episode. Pilots are seldom anything close to the rest of a series. Different writers, directors, ect., will change the look and storyline. I'll give it a few more before pulling the plug.
Considering this is the first TV series to depict soldiers while we are at war with the enemy since Gomer Pyle USMC, I think they've made a good start.
-
It just seems wrong to me.
Charon
-
The one line I did like from the show was when Sgt. Scream was esplaining why they werent goin to bomb or take the mosque.
"He said to the effect that there is an AL Jazera News crew in there with the enemy and some General 75 miles away is deciding how best to procede with out making the US look bad on TV tonite. Bad PR is bad for the war. Hell of a way to fight a war huh?"
-
Got a torrent link?
-
There was one good line.
"We didnt come here for your oil.
We came here to kick your arse"
Hollywoodish yea.
But it IS after all just a tv series
Coulda been better. coulda been worse
-
anyone planning on watching it tonite? I am Tivoing it because I'm going to be layed up the next couple of days but I figure I will at least watch something other than the pilot.
-
Seemed to me the Army was portrayed as a bunch of unmotivated, untrained, draftees. Definately Hollywood. I walked after the first 20 minutes or so.
-
Unmotivated? I did'nt get that at all. I thought it was a pretty realistic cross section of a military unit. You have some slackers, some stupid, some squared away and some lifers. What about the wounded guy that wanted to get back to his unit?
I thought they picked it up a notch scriptwise.

yup I have to agree RPM. I really liked this eppisode. Especially the fact that they didn't try to gloss over the civilians getting killed yet they didn't make the GIs look like blood thirsty animals either. Pretty good balance.
-
I think Erik Palladino is great as the Sgt. Best role I've seen him play.
-
Torrent anyone?

nothing IRK's me more than a woman who cheats on her husband while he is serving our country.... well nothing IRK's me more than the guy that cheats with that wife.
talk about the total slap in the face, disrespect to the country, you might as well piss on a flag while taking a **** on the constitution. that's about the ammount of respect a cheating wife of a service man is showing.
if you are to self centered, and without any bit of self control that you have to sleep around, GET A FREAKIN DIVORSE before the soldier leaves.
ok rant mode off

ROFL remember i'm JB73, been there, done that, argued till blue in the face, seen the threads explode....
regular run of the mill cheating is a different subject for a different thread.
here though, showing and dramatizing a woman cheating on her husband who is risking his life for her very safety and freedom, well... i'll be the BS show producers try to soften it up and make her look like a victim or some BS.

If you pick a slut for a wife, yer not too damn bright.
This is the kinda behavior trait in a woman that's instantly obvious to every other guy except the one who's married to her.
Wake up.. take responsibility for making a dumb decison and just cut the ***** lose. She wasn't worth your love to begin with, you made a mistake, aknowledge it and dump the broad, move on.
No hoe is worth a moments anguish... if she drops her pants when yer outta town, just guess how many other family critical missions she's gonna drop when you ARE in town. And trash like this is what guys get bent about, have kids with and slave for?
.. and one day snap and go to death row for?
mentally deficient. get a dog or something.. it'll love yah unconditonally, and yah probably won't snap if it gets laid when it gets out on friday nights.
Moral.. get a clue.. find a woman that's worth it. They're out there.. prolly lookin for a guy that won't drop his pant's the moment a hoe bats her eyes at him. Funny how that works both ways ain't it?

No one's justifying it - i'm just as against it and as violently opposed. Been there, had it done to me.

You just described my exwife.

Operative on the 'ex' part. Congragulations, and condolences RPM.

I'm begining to see "Over There" as a modern version of "Combat". Any thoughts on this weeks episode?
I was impressed once again with the writing. I have no problems with the ending, but the smart guy's attitude during the interrogation kinda disappointed me.
-
I read the first couple of posts. I didn't watch the show.
That being said, how can any of you support(with your viewing) this type of sensationalism. The previews disgusted me. I wish the fediddleers could at least wait until the casualties slowed down before they try to make money off of em. It just seems like the wrong thing to do at the wrong time to me.
Just my not so valued opinion though.
-
On the sensationalism scale of 1 - 10, I'd have to give it a 2. They are doing a pretty evenhanded job of storytelling, IMHO. BUT, I'm not there and don't know firsthand. It's definitely not the type of propaganda we saw coming out of Hollywood during WW2 or Korea.
-
Its no band of brothers but its a pretty good show.

Yea as a soldier dim would have known better but oh well. His wife is definatly parent of the year but then again I've known military spouses that are exactly like that.
I thaught it was a great epp. Som very "funny" parts in it as well.
As far as the show making money off the casualties who's to say that vets coming home don't want their story to be told. I know some of this mimics real life stories most of it is made up but the only outcry I've heard from vets was on the pilot wich I thought sucked arse.
I got to say I'm hooked.
I thought the psycological aspects of the interrogation were pretty interesting as well.
