My brother lives pretty far from me and has been using my old IBM PC300GL desktop. It's an old box that is running WinXP.
A friend of his just installed a new wireless card in a PCI slot. He called tonight and told me that he is now getting these error messages when he boots the system:
1762 configuration change has occurred
162 configuration change has occurred
I had my brother pull the new PCI card out and boot again...still has the same error messages.
Is the BIOS porked? Gonna have to flash the BIOS?
Your input is appreciated. :)

More info should be supplied, however, the "1762 config" sounds like a windowsNT fault code. The other I believe is a direct draw2 code (162) with windows 95. To fix this, start in safe mode, clear the message box regarding safe mode, right click, select display properties. Choose the settings tab, select change display type, change to your vid card type(ie ATI mach64PCI) Directdraw. Apply then restart. The 1762 is a bios code change, go to your bios web site, manufacturers website, troubleshooting manual (if you have one), you might have to flash your bios. Hope this helps.

i'm no where near the computer, but i'll try to help my brother - with your information on screen - over the phone. but, i don't think the PC is even making it past POST; so, how do I boot in safe mode?
hmm...maybe i need to make a bootable floppy somehow.
