Real men drive GAZs...
Friend's GAZ-66; Russian made 4WD truck (Ex-Finnish Army radio relay car).
4,25l V-8 (copy of Ford 260cid), 125hp, plenty of locks in differentials, possibility to raise/lower pressure in wheels when on move (handy in swamp).

(Big knob is for the shifter and bump in rear wall is for the driver's knuckles; without it you wouldn't be able to pull the shifter for reverse)

Beautiful car isn't it?
-
Looke like it needs attention. Don't you have a shot of the entire vehicle? Preferably a side shot.
-
Item.. that's no 'car'.
Item.. That's not an SUV, either.
Item.. Ahhhhhnold, Emporer of Kalifornia would not approve.
Item.. driving more than one on a US freeway would spur an immediate knee jerk reaction from the local national guard; they'd assume 'invasion' and promptly call in air support.
Item.. our interstate highways have speed limits, both minimum and maximum. While it's certain it could never get to the maximum, it's pretty doubtful the silly thing could obtain the minimum either.
Item.. most blondes could not parallel park that thing... and it would clash with their lip color.
Item.. Most gas pumps have a fifty dollar max... which would get that thing to the next gas station in a city, not the country.
Item: If i lived some place that had a refinery, no roads and no air national guard I'd still have a jeep. At least i can get parts for a jeep.
Need I go on?
(looks like fun Staga.. would love a ride in that thing cross country)

Woops.... misunderstood the subject line of thread.... wrong hummer. :D
-
Hang,
For an eco-concious Kalifornia - its ironic how we have more SUV's per capita then any state in the union.
BTW, GAZ's are for failed pimps. You want something worth yr time in purgatory, get a Ural that gets 200 liters / 100km. That'll show ya a dent in yr wallet.
-
No side shots sorry; it was between my friend's house and quite steep hill...
I'm sure there's plenty of pics around the web if you use google.
Quite similar:

More here:

Wolfala; I think Ural and KrAZ are about the same weight but latter looks like you could drive it thru the demolition derby and nobody wouldn't have the balls to touch it... :D

btw that thing is lighter than a fullsize Suburban and goes over ditches like nothing. Friend had 3 tree trunks in his back yard and after lowering pressures in tires it went over them without diff.locks connected.
Volvo C303 (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/volvo_c303.jpg) needed locks on and a Dodge Ram needed winch.
It also climbed quite high and steep step from the woods to the back yard without a sweat with idle. Strange machine but looks ugly as hell.
btw those pics were taken with Nokia 6680; gotta love these new cellphones :)
Edit:
Can you imagine a nice looking girl climbing in wearing a mini skirt?
I knew you could ;D

how well does it cruise at 80mph on the freeway and how good is the air conditioning.... what are 0-60 times?

Irrelevant homeboy issues when real mans are heading to midsummer party at "Kuusenpersiis" (far far backwoods) :D
-
I don't think it goes 80mph even in downhill but with it you can drive straight to your livingroom thru the walls even if you happen to live in a middle of the swamp like a true redneck.
It won't have an AC but who needs it when you can carry a freezer in the back.
And a TV
And a DVD player.
And a kitchen
And a waterbed if you like
And nobody wouldn't be surprised to see a satellite dish in the roof; especially if in camo paint :)
Dunno about the acceleration but the sound when I started it made my back hair grow couple inches.
I think I'd rather take a Hummer but I have to admit that GAZ would turn more heads when driving in the city.
Or in swamp :)
Anyways it's so frigging ugly you just have to like it :D

That has got to be one of the ulgiest hunks of peiced together scrap metal I've seen in a very long time. LOL

Wolfala, Ural consumes 200L/100km only offroad ;) You saw that offroad here in Russia means "antitank fences" in the West ;)
Staga, this KrAZ is am underfed kid compared to KrAZ model used to tow logs from tree-cutting grounds that I have seen in Urals. Imaginethe same truck only a meter taller and roaring through a 1 meter thick mud...
GaZ-66 is the best off-road vehicle known here. If it gets stuck in mud - then you need a tank to pull it out, a DT-75 tracktor wil get stuck 500m before Shishiga (nickname in Moscow, in Leningrad it's nicknamed Gashishka).
They stopped making them in 1996. Silly bastards. Now they produce millions of GaZelle 1.5 ton trucks, copies of Ford Transit, so we have a vehicle for former taxi-drivers to block all Moscow traffic.
Originally GaZ factory was a 1927 Ford factory bought by USSR in 1932, it produced Ford-A cars and Ford-AA 1.5 ton trucks, labeled as GaZ-A and GaZ-AA. So they finally turned back to making copies of American 1.5 ton trucks. :(

It is important. I had a Mercedes 240D, which is a 4 banger non turbo diesel. You had to seriously plan your highway entrance because the spool up time for 0-60 was over 15 seconds, which made it boarderline dangerous. Only saving grace was the 40 mpg, which was counteracted by the 3.00 gal for #2 diesel.

I have all that AND air conditioning...except for the waterbed, I prefer a stiff matress. :) (4X4, heavy duty, front and rear sways, airbags, Rancho 9000 9 -way adjustable shocks, 460 ci. motor. Passes everything on the freeway and offroad except the gas station  )

So those yellow vans were copies of Transits; I thought they did look a bit familiar :)
GAZelle was a good name; it felt like every yellow public taxi Gazelle I was in had clutch made by Australian kangaroos :D
Few pics from my trip to Chelyabinsk:

Rip I hope you're not going to drive Your Ford over anything bigger than a 2 by 4... You'd be stuck :)
But it's just as pretty as that Gaz :D

Gentlemen, I give you the International CXT.

I doubt they have many Transits in US; it was Ford Europe's product like Taunus, Cortina, Sierra etc.
Our club owns older Transit bus from mid seventies; its our "drunk ferry" but needs new engine and TLC.

Staga, that camper comes off in about 10 minutes. With a 4.10 gear ratio rear end combined with 420 ft. lbs. of torque, "stuck" is something that only happens when I can't get away from work to get out in the boondocks. :D

"Irrelevant homeboy issues when real mans are heading to midsummer party at "Kuusenpersiis" (far far backwoods) "
this doesn't involve a bunch of 'real mans" sweating naked together in some smoke house does it?
I have never been one for off road stuff.

I couldn`t tell from the pictures, but where is the "Soccer Mom" bumper sticker? :)
-
Of course a hummer is for sissies.
If your too scared to go out on the road without mega tons of gas guzzling military vehicle around to protect you you then you must be a sissy!
;)
-
Jackal your ordinary "soccer mom" couldn't propably climb in without having a hernia and at least the jungle of shifters without any indications which one is doing what for gears, differential locks and hi/low speeds would send her away screaming :)
Skydancer; you should see our mosquitos and gadflies... Anything less than couple layers of steel won't keep them away; bird size mosquitos suck you dry in 15mins and gadflies big as tigers eat your flesh like a frigging wolfs... and this is true!
-
and the ice bears!! don't forget the armor piercing ic bears!

Nilsen ate our icebears :(

i'd say you've been hanging around in russia too much. yer begining to devlop a russain flair for understatement
-
Ah but Staga, will they eat through leather and fiberglass?
Though I concede they might make a mess if they hit yopu with the visor up!
:lol :aok

If I wanted a Hummer, I would have asked your sister....
