Title: Attn: Flying Finns!
Post by: XrightyX on August 03, 2005, 11:47:33 PM
Been reading a book about beer.  It mentions a traditional Finnish beer made in the hollowed-out trunk of trees--Sahti.

Any of you Finns got an uncle who still makes this stuff?  I'm willing to trade a 6-pack of Milwaukee's finest for 20L of old family recipe Sahti :) :).

Seriously, how common is it and how can I get some?

Thanks

righty

Sahti is very common drink in Finland. You can buy it from liquor shop (here in Finland). But I am afraid that, Sahti from liquor shop is not so good ,than home made Sahti.  I have some friends who makes Sahti and I like it very much. Sahti is very strong drink so you have to know how to drink it or.. :D :D.

And funny results if you drink it before it is "ready"

:D

Maybe sahti was traditionally made in wooden barrels, but seems like other equipment is also used nowadays :)

Sahdin valmistusta (includes an english summary) (http://www.pcuf.fi/~jarmala/sah-isoj.html)

...and maybe the best link, instructions in english ;) --->

Believe me, I know how to drink!

I live in San Francisco, Ca.  I'd imagine that shipping just 1 bottle would be about $30-50.  Plus, I'm not sure of the legal requirements on shipping alcohol--probably I'd have to pay a tariff...unless...you're my long lost cousin and it's just a family tradition :lol.

I'd pay for everything, if it's legally possible.  Always willing to try different forms of alcohol :).

You named it! This calls for FPO (flak panzer oil) !!!!

Who sends sahti to our dear friend remember to add a bottle of FPO with it (if its possible to send flammable/corrosive/poisonous stuff.. ;) )
