Title: Deck fight
Post by: Ack-Ack on August 04, 2005, 09:54:58 PM
This is a film where I get into at first was a 2v1 against a La7 and bf109F that was joined by another La7.  At the very beginning of the film, I wasn't paying attention and a Knitwit N1K2 hit me with a head on pass which took out one of my .50 caliber machine guns.  It wasn't a promising start.

I went for the La7 first to avoid being sandwiched by them and kept on him until the bf109F broke and gave me a perfect angle to hit him at.  During this time is when another La7 shows up and for  the most part I am able to stay out of his cone of fire. He does manage to get a ping on me as I finally got a kill angle on the 1st La7.  Damage wasn't all that bad, just a fuel leak and what pretty much amounted to a light oil leak.

In the last fight, I used the vertical to reverse on the La7 and get inside for a sweet kill angle.  After that the fight is just me limping home.  Pay attention to how I work the flaps, you'll hear me lowering and raising them to help me work into an angle for the shot.

Wow, that P38 turns better than spitfires.  And I though spit pilots were dweebs.!!!!

Fun film, but maybe some audio commentary would be nice.  To let us know what you are trying to accomplish in the maneuver.

Listen to the flaps, you'll hear me work the crap out of them.  And look at the slip indicator and you'll see almost full rudders on each vertical turn.

As for the running commentary, 3v1 on the deck is a handful enough.

Nice film and great flying ack ack. I wasn't able to hear flap motors in the film. Do I need to turn up "flap" sounds on my AH sounds set-up?

I noticed your default fwd view is slanted low and right. How do you see?

Don't know why the film shows views like that.  I don't know if adjusting the sound in AH will increase the sound volume in AH film viewer.

If you were to look at the film in external view and kind of zoom in on the P-38, you'll definitely see those flaps move up and down.

I have used the 38's mostly for JABO runs and have yet to master the turn-fighting of the 38's Family, but learned a few things by just watching...glad I wasn't on the recieving end of the 50cal and 20mm.... :D

ak-ak, I have a few questions if you don't mind revealing trade secrets...

I noticed that you seem (to me) to be doing mostly flat turns. I suppose from habit I'm more likely to break high and left/right instead of just left/right, on the order of a 45-degree departure, but you seemed to stay relatively level. Is this intentional, or is it more of a habit? To me it would seem that turning flat might leave you open to caught in a deflection shot (and I'm surprised those pilots didn't kill you in one of the 10 chances they had on ya!)

You did use full rudder in some turns, but no rudder in others.. It was about half and half, according to the slip indicator (or you used just normal rudder to prevent slip in half of them). When would you use full rudder in a turn and when would you not?

Watching it through the first time, I thought "Oh man, he's going to get saddled by that La!" and you were. Luckily he couldn't hit squat, but did you allow this or was it momentary loss of SA?

Oh yeah, dude you land HOT! Lol.. 160+ touchdown? Too hot for my blood :)
