Title: another p-38 update
Post by: Citabria on August 05, 2005, 10:11:37 PM
plugging away on this bird I made a big change in the colors and contrast of this one to make it look more like it was sitting in the bright sunlight.

turbochargers and radiator housings still need to be finished and need exhaust stains. other than that its getting pretty close to being done.

comments and suggestions welcome.

Fester, it's Looking great. I'm interested to see a closer look on the weathering of the wing root. Could you maybe post a specific screenshot of it? I'm still working on how to make it lokking decent.

Thank you

thanks for the positive feedback! glad this skin is turning out better. I think it looked much too bland before I altered it.

Skychimp I use adobe photoshop.

Airmess here is a closeup of the wingroot areas.

I havent added scratches and flaked off paint to the nacels and access panels of the plane yet just this top wing area.

Fes you should do same skin as Jager did for p38J, that black one but do that type of weathering and lighting effect on it, would be really kickass.

Someone help me out with this "Black" J.  Never seen it in game.  The name Jager attached to it was for an OD/Gray J from the 20th FG.

Still haven't found anything on it anywhere

Fester, what size canvas do you use before formatting to 1024 for AH?

guppy are you still in contact with  Mr. kirby? the p-38 veteran pilot that this skin was inspired by?

also I think the black p-38 is an innacurate skin. only black p38s were the 2 seater night fighter versions from everything I have read.

as for the resolution...

I started in the origional 1024x1024 format and just zoomed in and out a lot.

when I tried using 2048x2048 i found i lost most small rivet details and things in resizing.

I guess its a tradeoff. resizing from a higher resolution gives a very polished look but creating the skin in 1024x1024 gives you control over very small details that would be lost in the conversion.

also areas that have extreme stretching issues like on the tops of the nacels might be harder to precisely map out if working in a higher resolution and converting it down to 1024.

thanks for all the great feedback!

No doubt in my mind that there wasn't a black 20th FG P38J :)

Still getting e-mail from Mr. Kirby.  I'll pass on the last image if that's ok with you, to see what he thinks.

Cit, I have a pretty good stencil layer for the P38 if you'd like it.
i.e. maintenance and warning stuff.
Up close its kinda funny, but way from it (usual distances) you can all but read it. I put it together from a lot of different sources and is 90%+ accurate, missing a few, I couldn't make out from pics.
If you'd like it pm me with your email addy.

A late reply from Mr. Kirby regarding the image I sent of Fester's 38G in Kirby's markings.  I think this is a positive response :)
