Good way to start off the week. Turn on tv, and there is the opening credits to Das Boot.

Was it the directors cut? I have that on DVD and it was well worth the purchse. The film still holds up very well in all areas over the years.

Yeah he is a great actor, make Sean Connery look like a Hack.

Besides without this movie, Americans might doubt that we captured the enigma machine to break the codes!

The brits are always taking credit for our stuff.

Did they show it in German with English subtitles?  Always adds to the realism.  Fantastic film!  BTW  The U-Boat used in Das Boot is about 5 miles from where I live in the Bavarian studios.  I keep meaning to go and check it out because, apparently, it's a full mock up!

If you're interested in seeing the real thing, we have the U-505 in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry.  A bit of a trip for you, though...

That's a bit too far! ;)

They have U-995, U-2540 in Germany, and U-534 back home in England (Birkenhead) which would be easier to get to.

Incidently, here's a link (http://uboat.net/gallery/articles/u96_bavaria_studios.htm) to U-96 mockup used in Das Boot.

Is the U2540 one of the mark 21 boats?   That would be worth seeing.

I think there was supposed to be a U-boat museum in Hamburg, but unfortunately I was unable to find it during my trip there last August. I'm not sure whether my travel guide was quite up-to-date, though.

Up to mighty London camw an Irishman one day,
As the streets were paved with gold, sure everyone was ghey!
Singing songs of Piccadilly and of Liecester Square,
Till Paddy got excited and he shouted to them there!

Its a long way to Tipperary! Its a long way to go!
Its a long way to Tipperary to the sweetest girl I know.
Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Liecester Square!
Its a long, long, way to Tipperary, But my hearts right there!

Das Boot is great.

When it came time to do an english version, the original actors came and did the english lines themselves.

The DVD version is the directors cut, and makes incredible use of surround sound.

I have to agree. I have 2 versions on DVD (and the original on VHS), the Director's Cut and the Miniseries one. I just love the miniseries version, it adds a lot more depth to the story (e.g. the girl waving when the boat is leaving the pens).

I started drinking more Beck's after watching Das Boot.  That's what the Germans on the U-boat were drinking in the movie

In Italy last week, I made a point of visiting La Spezia, which was being used by the Germans as a naval base for their U-boats. The U96 was headed there when it came under air attack in the straits of Gibraltar, and never made it.

I had hoped to see some WW2 history there, so headed straight for the naval museum. It was quite interesting - there were no submarines in there except that tubular thing on which two men would sit astride in scuba gear. There were loads of torpedoes though, some of them looked older than WW2 and some appeared to be about 18-20ft long! Apparently the torpedo was a British invention - Robert Whitehead b1823.

The CSS Hunley was the first real submarine to sink an nme warship during combat.  Brits may have invented the torpedo, but Confederates invented the submarine.  It was built here and I went inside the old original building when I was a kid.  That building was taken apart brick by brick and the individual bricks numbered to rebuild it one day.  I sure hope there is some accounting when the time comes to rebuild it.  Doubt it.  Those bricks are probably all over God's earth by now. :D

Did the turtle come before or after the Hunley, thought it was before. Too lazy to google it. Was the turtle not considered a submarine ?
Title: Das Boot
Post by: Chairboy on August 09, 2005, 09:49:33 AM
The Turtle was a submarine, and it swam a hundred years or so before the Hunley, but (and this is a big but) the Hunley is famous for being the first submarine to succesfully destroy an enemy target.  The Turtle was not succesful in its attack run.

I dont think there are any MkVIIs in the US. The earliest model in the States would be the U-505 in Chicago and its a MkIX.

There are plenty of MKXX through MK48s on display in Pearl Harbor, right next to the Arizona memorial museum.

Torpedoes, that is.  :D  Great stuff, you can sit on a MK48 ADCAP, make pinging noises, then yell 'you arrogant ass, you've killed us!' before throwing yourself to the ground and rolling around screaming.

Always good for a larf before security bundles you off.

Dinger, I could be wrong, but I believe in Das Boot they are attacked while passing through the Straights of Gibraltar and so badly damaged that they have to return to Cherbourg. On arriving at Cherbourg they are again bombed and sunk before they can get the U-boat into the Pen.

They stop and rearm before they try to go through the Straight.  I think it was a base in Spain...the Atlantic side.
Title: Das Boot
Post by: Dinger on August 09, 2005, 03:25:17 PM
... They were attacked at Gibraltar, and dove to the bottom. Stuck at the bottom a bit, then they made it back to the surface, and continued (it would have been worse going back -- remember the current is west-to-east). They pulled in to la spezia (which was the same set as used for Brest, so it looked identical) and got bombed there by stock-footage mossies. They did not go back around to Cherbourg.

Mossies?  Haven't seen it for awhile but thought it was P47s or something like that?  I'm in the mood to watch it again now! :)  Maybe later in the week!

No it didn't. And neither were they trying to get to Cherbourg. The U96 had departed from La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay, France, for duty in the Atlantic. When returning from the Atlantic, U96 is heading back to La Rochelle but receives new orders to proceed to La Spezia, picking up supplies and fuel en route at Vigo, Spain. This is the scene where the U96 officers have a buffet meal with the officers on the SS Weser. After that, they attempt to pass the strait of Gibraltar to get to La Spezia. That's when they came under air attack and, with a damaged bow plane, ended up on the bottom.

Once they managed to complete repairs, the captain decides that with as much damage as they have, they will return to La Rochelle instead of going to La Spezia.

What type of aircraft sink it at the end of the movie?

Hmm it's hard to say... actually looks something like a T-6... low wing, radial engine, but not so eccentric as to look like a P-47. In any case, it was a model...

If you liked the movie, I suggest you to read 'Sharks and little fish', a novel by a WWII german submariner named Wolfgang Ott. Griping and impressive.

Hi Daniel!

I've got WinDVD5, which allowed me to extract the following screenshots to help identify the planes.

You couldn't help but feel sorry for them.
The dash through the Straits of Gibralter, getting shelled and depth charged, sitting on the bottom doing repairs.

Finally struggling back into port to almost immediately have it bombed.

The ending of the film differs from the facts. The captain of U96 survived and lived until 1986, and even helped in the making of this 1981 movie.

But yes, as far as the movie goes, that was a sad ending.

The first two pics definitely look like T-6

The third one could very well be mossies, but I doubt they were real.

That's one reason which makes it so Golly-gee good movie; it's nothing Hollywood would had ever produced (like U-571 or  "Pearl Harbour"... LOL) but it's showing the miseries and horrors of the war and basically tossing them against the viewers face.

If I remember right the end of that movie, you  CANT say SURE if captain dies or not. He gets hits and falls but dying is not confirmed.
