Just had a graphic dream about Discovery failing to re-enter safely, so I bolted awake and ran downstairs to check NASA TV. Looks like they'll be landing at Edwards in California because of thunderstorms. 25 minutes until they fire OMS to begin de-orbit.
Come on guys, get down safe...

I pray they make it back ok. If they do, the repair was good. Gotta be harry as hell.

Entering atmosphere now.

It's further into reentry than Columbia was in 2003. So far so good.

Double sonic boom! Just flew over LA, a bunch of people just woke up and wondered why.
-
Safe landing! Woo-hooo!
-
Wow that was cool
Glad they made it down safe.
-
Welcome Home Discovery!

Glad they landed. Hopefully they terminate the program.

nice :)
im with funked on this one

Well, that'll never happen. If you have a better space program. please suggest it.:D

will they never retire the shuttles?
wow.. they must have found the ultimate space mobiles for all eternity :D
-
unfortunately the replacement is a long way out.

The Crew Exploration Vehicle SHOULD be something that could fly in 5 years. Unlike the X-33/Venturestar, it doesn't require new technology to magically appear. Whether it is made on schedule has more to do with politics than technology.
It has good support so far, with a bid process underway, so... my fingers are crossed.

So around 5:10 AM I heard the loudest double hit sonic boom EVER and trust me I've heard ALOT of them low and close.
My wife and I shot up in bed and I said "WHY IN THE fluff'n HELL ARE THEY FLYING SO DAMN EARLY?"
On my way to work I heard on the radio it was the shuttle and I was disappointed that I'd missed it landing live up close and in person.
About an hour ago they towed discovery about 100 ft from my window at work.
:aok

I heard on the radio that it landed at Edwards. First thing that popped into my mind was Guns sitting in a lawn chair, camera in hand.

sorry I don't feel like going to jail. Photography of USAF flightlines and parking ramps is strictly forbiden.

I might have a chance to see Discovery. When they land at Edwards they normally stop the piggybacked 747 at Carswell for refueling.
I watched it land there once several years ago from the Lake Worth Bridge on 820. There is also an excellent vantage point at a little park on Robert's Cut-Off that overlooks the base.

yup even if it was just being towed it was sureal seeing it in person. The thing really gets dirty on re-entry. I can't wait to see it loaded up onto it's 747 for the trip home to Canaveral.

I'd have to see what his opinion is and back it. Personally, I think the shuttles are still as safe as they were 10 years ago. They just have to do a bit more maintenence and take a few more precautions.
