So lets assume you had 1000 to 1200 to spend on a new TV. What would you get?
-
something like this:

biggest thing... built in HDTV tuner.

Do you just want some dinky tv for a bathroom or kitchen? If your looking for a main tv then save your coin and get something decent.
-
I bought this last week. Love it. Speakers on the bottom so it fits in our existing cabinet.

Id like to sit one in front of the toilet so I have sonething to watch while on the can.
-
samsung TVs are good too but...
avoid SAMSUNG HDTV tube CRT monitors and tube CRT projectors.
-
I'd get a loan and buy a $3600 hitachi 42" plasma tv.
Oh wait, I already got one, but I paid cash for it. Hitachi 42PD78900TA. It's a euro/Australian model, 1024x1024 resolution. Looks really nice. Probably a total waste of money, but I figure since I resisted buying a 32" tube 5 years ago when I could first really afford one, I "deserve it" now.

LOL spoken like a man with deep pockets.
Only a man with deep pockets would suggest spending $1,000 on a TV for the kitchen.
Must be nice
Unfortunately the vast majority of people couldnt afford to. Nor would they even if they had an extra grand

Actually Dred, I would, but I am a bit of a nut that way.
The main room has a Sony KDF-60XBR950 in it, and the master bedroom has a Sony 32" XBR2, and I am looking for something to put in the kitchen after we finish the remodel.

OK, dumb question.
What is the difference between an HDTV and one with a built in HDTV tuner?

MT, HDTV's come in two basic varieties.
1) It has a built-in HD tuner.
2) It has no built-in HD tuner and requires an external tuner to receive HD channels, but still has the NTSC tuner inside.
All are 16:9 aspect ratio sets. Most have some type of video manipulation to handle 4:3 broadcasts. Either black bars on the sides, or stretched to fill the screen warping the image, or stretching in both directions losing the bottom of the broadcast but filling the screen and not deforming the video.

I'd buy Lazs's monster - it's so big I could use it to heat my house! :lol

Maybe not Rich. But probably well above average LOL
I'd love to too if I could afford it. But when I stick my hand in my silver mine I usually only come out with a fistful of copper LOL

Nah Dred, it is just priorities for me. The new 60" set (I got a heck of a deal on it from a disgruntled employee at Ultimate Electronics when they were closing down here in the D/FW area.) replaced a 10+ year old Pioneer Elite 45" rear projection set (still working like new, gave it to a friend). The Pioneer was $5,500.00 new.
I was not really ready to buy an HDTV set yet, as technology is still moving in that area (television tech), but I just got too good a deal on this one to pass it up.
