Hi All,
It's high time the paratroopers we drop out of C47s & M3s were actually armed.
Why? Well for instance, the other day I decided it was time to be a really big weenie, and after bailing out of my shattered bird over the town I promptly walked to and then hid in the Map Room and sure enough managed to zap several of the lemming enemy paras who came charging in with my .45 o'death thus lengthening the lifespan of our massively over-run base by a few minutes.
So here is my suggestion:
1) Give each of the paras either a Tommy Gun or a Rifle and a reasonable amount of ammo and have them fire at the nearest enemy target in range (other than toolsheds).
2) Have the paras assume a formation OTHER than a straight line when running towards the map room (a simple V for instance)
This would make them more realistic, slightly more difficult to strafe, and free them up from charging one after another Lemming style into a hail of .45 bullets in the maproom.
Please can we get rid of that particularly arcadish element?

-
Yeah that would be kinda cool.
-
and more ammo for the .45 (just in case) :D
-
And please please...give them a uniform appropriate to the mission. 82d or 101st for para. 1st INF or some other armored inf unit for the ground.
Why not go as far and allow Infantry ability to destroy town on their own. Would be cool to see mass para drops to take town down, while fighters and gv's do the genuine support role.

I still haven't figured out where the map room is. Is that the "indestructable" building??

Base capture by A/I. I can just hear the whines now.
But it would be cool to watch, or try to stop it.

It's the green hump / hut in the middle of town, kind of looks like a bunker.

I've learned not to ask for too much in one bite SPQR, so I'm just going to ask for the minimum, paras who shoot back rather than acting exactly like a bunch of pieces of wood on a conveyor belt.
(But I agree that more development of the ground war aspects will help TOD immensely)

if you gonna have the troops take the town by themselves (which they should be able to), they need to have a set squad type: 7 riflemen, 1 LMGer, 1 SMGer, and a bazooka man.
if you really wanna get into fun stuff, you could deploy defencive infantry and even engineers do repair the town.
-
I think the engineers are included. Notice how the ack starts working on capture?

"And please please...give them a uniform appropriate to the mission. 82d or 101st for para. 1st INF or some other armored inf unit for the ground."
What about British Air Landing Brigade, Parachute Division, Or falschirmjager Uniforms? We're not all Americans you know! ;)
-
absolutely skydancr! Just associated uniforms with current equipment. definitely brits for sure ( I just didnt know any units to qoute). be nice to have german support equipment as well. I agree seagoon, not biting off more can chew. Just thought I'd throw it out there. And yes defensive infantry too, the immersion would be intense, specially if sqd equipped with bazooka or panzerschrek!
-
Don't forget the sappers!
-
it should take at least two companies to capture a town. there should be AI defenders in every bombed out building. they could be ordered around by the same general that orders me to strafe the ack or kill buildings when I'm furballing. :D

Sounds more and more like WWIIOnline to me...

Why not make it alittle like WWIIOL....
We are always b____ing about porking the airfields to make the capture. Do away with the need to destroy the base/town. (you still can if you like) But also do away with AI troops... make the troops have to be real players.....
So you want to take base... you need 10 players for your C-47/M-3.... to do large attacks.... It is going to take missions and more team work. And hopefully more fun.
With larger land battles in and around the towns the buff drivers and fighterbomber guys now have something to drop on sides the FH/BH and porking the airfields....
With some work, something like this may work. And with any luck make game play more fun for all... maybe.

Sounds like a plan now try convincing HT and Skuzzy!!!!!!!!!!!:rofl

Sounds like a plan now try convincing HT and Skuzzy!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, we have planes, ships and tanks now....
Removing AI troops for player controled soldiers isn't that far of a jump. The big thing is can "Aces High" make money with it by adding to the paying player base? I think they can...
Over in WW2OL there lots of unhappy Sqdn's,and with the ways things are going over there. If HT & Skuzzy was to do some work on the ground war....
Maybe players and Sqdns there would make AH2 their new home. This community has taken in players from "Warbirds and Airwarrior", whats one more? In the end it comes down to can HT make $$$ with a better ground war? If he can, that is more dollars for Aces High II and someday Aces High III.
Besides... HT and his crew have the best job in the world...
But they aren't doing it for free.... more paying players can't be a bad thing, can it?
-
why not make it so you have to find 10 willing players to load up into a C47 and bail out over a town?

I don't bail out of my Flaming Spit...............not often anyways:lol
Why would I want some dweeb to fly me to an LA7 goon hunting...so I can watch the C47 be split in half and then have to walk 20 miles to be strafed by another LA7 or D9?
Nope..................think I'll FLy in AcesHIGH...not Troopers Low

If it is the only way to take a base... they will come.
And no I don't want AH to become WW2OL. The scale is way to big and the fights are hard to find. AH is a flight sim and needs to stay that way. But making AI troopers real players who have to fight their way into a town I think will add to game play and give the mudmovers something to drop bombs besides porking the airbases.
Then again... If I was King for the day I would remove all AI stuff...
If it moves the map or kills players... I think needs to be fired by players.... ie... all the AI AAA guns on bases and CV task forces.
But that is just me...

AH is a smorgasboard. It has fare for the pilot and tanker alike.
Adding more gamplay for the grunts is a win-win situation. More fun on the ground means more players which is more $$ for HT. If the grunts are having more fun, bless em. It's also more ground targets for the jabo pilots.
How can this be a bad thing?
-
I dont want grunts in my Fight Sim.

Been there, done that :)
But it was in Airwarrior. Took the town base too, much to our surprise.
It may have been the Nomads finest hour. Definately one of the funniest :)

How about guys who are really into the CTF aspect of the game work at, the same way we always did? By this I mean destroying the town, escorting a goon in, protecting him til he drops, then protecting the little AI sticks on the ground until they make the capture? It's a sound theory, it's been tested 1,000s of times, and it's already coded. Ain't that great?

Reminds me of Air Warrior when we would get a Death Star (fully gunned B-17) at Fightertown and kick arse! I would like to see the ability to have people man each gun position in a bomber implemented!:aok

AH isnt a flight sim.

Yes it works... but great?
Its been done 1000's of times in AH.
Its been done 1000's of times in Warbirds.
Its was done 10,000's of times in Airwarrior.
I know started in AW 10 years ago. And dropped tons of troops over years in all 3 games. It would not kill me see something new when it comes to taking bases and moving the map.

Thought you meant flight sim you know how they don't teach spelling up there. BTW AH isnt a "fight sim" eather.(whatever the hell that is)

Troops, counter troops, counter counter troops, counter counter counter troops............
If you start with this kind of stuff you have to code a detailed ground war. That's WW2OL.
I would prefer the implementation of a refined strategic system. No 3d coding of new ground war elements but a relativly simple background database.
Means:
Every base has a stock of vehicles, fighters and bombers. Let's say: 30 of each type. As long as there is a supply line to 1 or more friendly bases, the stock is continually resupplied.
Take all the supplying bases in the neighbourhood and a base is cut off and get's no more supplies.
-
why not lower the required number of paratroopers to 3 or 5 and make the trooper a player-controlled element? it would make base capture more of a challenge.

 Are you sure that was AW? I don't remember player-controlled troopers in AW. Unless, of course, you all bailed out of a death star. :D

Yep, it was 10-12 goonies and we all bailed after the troops. The troops didn't get the field but when the pilots all landed we got it :)

:lol O, that was you guys.
-
Just a reminder. All I was asking for was paras who shoot back so that an entire squad can't be slaughtered in short order by a bailed pilot with his .45, not an entirely new game engine.
Just a few rounds of .30-06 or simply loading the .45 all of our current lemmings appear to be holding. Wouldn't be too difficult to implement at all.

C-47: First military production model with 6in greater span, revised fuel tanks, R-1830-92 radials, small astrodome, and payload of 6,000lb or 28 paratroops or 14 casualties and three attendants
just add more and 45 wont have enough bullets
