Be sure you save them as an 8 bit (256 colors) bmp, not just any bmp.

Also, be sure you name the file appropriately.  If you did a 51, be sure the name of the bmp is the same as the stock bmp name in the original folder.

There's a Photoshop plugin called bright. With this you can export the skin into a correct and optimized BMP file. I use it as well.

good luck

You have to copy the plugin in the correct directory within photoshop (i'll chek tonight which one this is) and use the plugin "bright" by the menu item "export". thats all about, pretty simple.

i was trying to get the file size down to match the original yesterday

it was only after you saying it should be 8 bit that i realised what id done wrong,i hadnt merged the layers together before saving so it wouldnt give me an 8 bit option
i spent 2 hours doing this skin yesterday so i was a little frustrated when i couldnt see it
thanks alot:aok all

You can't save a file in BMP format as layered. PS will automatically merge the layers. There has to be an option somewhere that you choose 8 bit, 16, or 24 though.
I use PaintShop Pro but a BMP is a BMP and there's no such thing as a layered BMP, at least I've never seen one :)

No , no such thing as a layered bmp.
But what would be nice in AH2 is a bitmap with an alpha channel where the alpha channel is used to control the amount of  reflectivity.
Same as FS2004.
