Title: DirectX and 64-bit windows
Post by: eh on August 13, 2005, 04:11:21 PM
Is DirectX necessary for winxp 64 bit?

I ask because DirectX is not in any of my directories and it will not install if I download it. And there seems to be no info. on the matter in Microsoft's wonderful web site or in Windows' helpful help files.

I can't really test Aces High... my old MSFF software won't install, even with the Program Compatibility Wizard, so I am without a stick for the moment. Aces High will start, and I can at least get on the runway.

Athlon 64 4000+, 2Gig RAM
geForce 6800 GT vid card
Win XP 64 bit

The latest directX is part of XP64.

Don't use the software to install your stick, use the game controllers app in the control panel. Add in it using one of the generic sticks, i.e. how many axis and hats etc.

I think you can use the 6 button stick with POV and throttle option, also place a check in the rudder pedals box.

Thank you kev367th!

I will try to set up the j/s tomorrow. Man, if your advice on the MS Force Feedback installation works, I will build you a temple!

A temple, lol.
I'll settle for a medium sized shrine ;) .

Nope, it's gotta be a temple, plus a monument, thanks to you. Your advice was excellent.

Here is what happened. Because my MSFF software would not install, I never plugged the sucker in, because you are supposed to install the MS software first. So this morning, I plugged in the j/s and connected it to a USB port. When I booted, a bubble pops up telling me that new hardware has been detected, installed and is ready to use. I snorted (this is Windows!) but went to the Game Controller to check it out anyway.

My j/s was listed, so I checked it out using the Properties. It was fine so I fired up Aces High, set it up, and it performs just as well as it did under Win 98 with the Sidewinder software installed.  Amazing.

This is great news for all those Sidewinder FF2 stick owners out there. Many thanks to you! :aok

Strange request -
Only be used with XP-64
If you have XP-64 you have DX9.

Couldn't find a standalone, but here is a link to the SDK which includes redistributle -

Even the beta versions had DX9 included.
