Title: Russian SKS
Post by: Hangtime on August 15, 2005, 11:11:49 AM
Whooo Hoo!! Got my new toy!!

Russian SKS, superb condition. Has the stock cleaning kit, folding bayonet, nothing else. Fixed magazine. All matching numbers.

And, thanks for the outstanding advice I got here on what to look for.. was a huge help.

Questions.. what accessories for 'sport shooting' should I get... hang with me, stream of conciousness stuff comming next..

Ammo.. Wolf FMJ, HP or SP.. ? I'm hearing the Wolf Hollow Points ain't worth a damn for soft targets and that I should stick to the soft points...?

A scope? Don't want a long scope.. would hang over the breech... wondering about a forward scope mount, in front of the breech? Being an old fart, I need glasses close in (reading range).. can still see ok at a distance. That'd make a front mount scope unworkable, wouldn't it? Nominal range expected would be @ 200 yards. Considering a scope because my eyesight aint good enuff anymore to hold a decent open sight picture. Light amplification could be useful...

Stock.. needs to be a hair longer?.. feels a mite cramped. (as did the made by mattel m-16) Is it just me, or did they make all carbines for midgets? ;) Considering the scope and stock extension (2"??) as a package purchase.. wanna do the right thing.. balance the back mounted scope against a slightly lenthened stock would make for a bit less cramped shoulder hold woudn't it?

Magazine.. definitely upgrading to a 15 round fixed mag. It ain't too big.. the 20 and 30 round banana boxes are absurd for my uses...

Muzzel brake.. makes it look kewl, never seen any real 'improvement' in kick with these things. Besides, don't mind the kick. Only advantage is flash supression, yes? Weighed against the length scarafice? (I like the short front end, balance is pretty good now, need to be convinced the 3" length inrease is worth it)

Comments?  (thanks again, in advance!)

If you're thinking of wearing a black pyjama ... go to the closest psychiatrist you can find :D

For me the biggest problem with the SK is the uber-short stock. Guess those black pajamas only came in small and smaller sizes.

I bought a full size (murrican) synthetic for my plinker and it shoots much nicer now.

EDIT:
Regarding the scope, I'd pass. The best you can hope for is just under two minutes of angle with bulk-rate ammo. Two minutes is not an issue with steel sights out to ~150yds anyhow.

What Edbert said about the scope.

If yer just going blind like me though, you might want to put one of the "dot" scopes on it. Then you don't have to have the vision to see the sights, you just put the glowing dot on the target and shoot. Helpful at night for us old dudes. It'll give you about the same accuracy as iron sights with that gun/ammo anyway.

Did you check the state laws about selling those in state? If not you may very quickly end up a felon. Assault rifles pre or post ban can be sold in Californiastan.

I've had pretty good luck with the wolf hollow point, the soft point are not as good...only downside is you cant reload the casings. Also got a scope, but it's actually sold as a replacement bolt cover, the newer bolt cover has a built in railing which mounts the scope, doesnt get in the way of the ejecting shells (i dont use it much though).
For the magazine, if you completely remove the trigger group, you can use detachable magazines (10 or 15 round).
I also got a muzzle break, mostly for looks, because in my opinion the recoil is pretty manageable.
All this stuff I purchased on ebay, in sporting goods.
Take a look, there are several options for the SKS.

He knows. He's just confirming I live outside the state.. and I do; currently in the Confederated Free State of New York (as opposed to the socialist democratic City of New York) which is so damn close I can often smell it and usually see it.

Nice stuff Greencloud! I like the chromed bolt SK, the camo one appears pretty kewl.. nice and light but not enuff of a forward grip for my gorilla length upper appendages! Make me a nice price on the chromed one and I can save the one I got as the collectors item it obviously was. Yer gonna have frothing dogs all over yah for the mattel piece aqnd the AK's. ;)

Toad!! That loooks like what I want.. and yer right, need a scope less than an easy to colminate aiming dot!

Seraphim, I'm hearing from the 'hunters' that the Wolf HP's tend to travel right thru game at 100-150 yards and the SP's do better for soft targets. Had one guy tell me the HP's can poke a hole thru 1/4" steel... sounds like the HP's shoot better, maye a better multi-purpose round?

Was it made in Russia or China?  I had one that my father got over in Europe back in the late 50's or early 60's, Russian made, still had the packing grease on it, never ever been fired.  My father had such a high security clearance that no one was aloud to check his stuff when he moved around.   I sold it for $300 a few years ago.  Still kicking myself in the *** for that one.

Back in the early 90's when I had my FFL I bought 10 sks' for $69 a piece. Chinese made. I gave one to my brother and brother-in-laws and a few friends..

I only kept 2 and and bought new stocks...

They are fun to shoot...

No way I would pay $300 dollars for one...

Russian made is alot better.  I paid $200 for a M-1 20 years ago and sold it for over $800 not to long ago.  Which is cheap.

The Chinese Norincos are under $100, the Russian ones are about twice as good but even in unfired condition should be less than $200. The only BIG difference is the quality of the chrome lining the barrels.

I use my SKS as a relacement for my 10-22 plinker, it had alot more power but is nowhere NEAR as accurate. I can write my name on paper with the little Ruger at 50yds standing.
