Title: Change of pace
Post by: StarOfAfrica2 on August 15, 2005, 11:43:01 PM
Ok, so yall are experts on airplanes.  I'm still convinced there have to be some oddballs out there that will give you a run, but its going to take digging.  In the meantime, I decided to change tactics.  These are people, not planes.  Some are very easy, some not so easy, but I dont think any of them are hard.  Still, that depends on how many of you took your noses out of the airplane pics long enough to notice some of the men in aviation history.

Try to keep the names in order please.  On #7 I'm not sadistic, just tell me who the group is please.  Should be a very easy one.

I just thought it would be good, as we pass VJ Day, to recognize some of the men who played important roles in the war, in our military, and in the development of aviation.  How many medals they got dont matter.  They and all like them were heroes.

I realize these men are Americans, and I also realize that we didnt do it alone.  However, I dont know too many places to find pics of RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, or RCAF pilots.  So in the end I just stuck with what I knew.  This by no means is intended to suggest anything, its just my limited resources right now.  As my database expands, I'll try to be more inclusive.

I do have some German and Japanese pilot photos, but I somehow didnt feel they were appropriate for this group at this time.  Enjoy.

I believe #9 is Glenn Curtiss. #10 is Butch Voris.

Heh, 9 is a ringer.  I wondered if anyone would get that one.  As a hint, he's the only one in the list who had nothing directly to do with WWII aviation, although he is inextricably bound up with the history of aviation in general.  And of course, all the people on the list are Americans.

All the others but 9 are correct.  10 is Capt. Voris, founder of the Blue Angels.

It's Oroville alright.

I got a ride with PH Spencer, the designer of the Republic SeaBee when I was a kid: my dad was intrested in building an AirCar, basically a plans built SeaBee.

Framed on PH Spencers office wall he had his original pilot's license.  It was signed by Oroville Wright.
