Title: To Save a Hummingbird
Post by: Gunslinger on August 16, 2005, 08:14:30 PM
catchy title eh?

So even the Gunslinger has a soft spot for poor helpless animals.  While not an avid bird watcher or anything I think hummingbirds are magnificant creatures.

On to the story.  Last night I discovered what I thought was an insanly huge beatle flying around in my garage.  It turned out to be a little humming bird.  The poor guy flew into my garage and couldnt find his way out incesently bumping against the ceiling while flapping away with his wings.

Normally I'd think of darwin in this situation but the guy was in there all night chirping.  He was still there when I got to home from work today chirping away.  Needless to say I felt sorry for him so I fasioned a fish net to the end of a broom stick to give him some "direction".

Well he ended up perched on the hard top of my Jeep pretty much exausted.  Mrs. Gunslinger picked him up with a towel and "placed" him in a bush in our front yard.  Well he fell out of the bush and was sitting there watching the ants drool at their evening meal.  Again, I felt sorry for him and hate ants at the same time.  I thought even if I can't save him at least he wont get eatin alive by ants.

Mrs. Gunslinger went into the house and grabbed a styrafoam cup and filled it up with some suger water.  I donned my mechanics gloves and tipped the cup on it's side so he could get some go-juice.  It's amazing they actually have tounges like lizards.  He drank up and seemed to pep up a little.  He stayed in my hand for about 15 minutes until I ran out of beer and got board being a bird stand.  I gave him a little "encouragement" and he flew at first towards the bush then changed course and headed for the Jeep.  He managed to gain enough alt to get to the tree and there he sits chirping away and hopfully digesting his "energy drink".  Then I thought of something Nash said to me a few months back referring to the "roots of Karma".

I named him pedro.

Yeah wait til he takes a dump on the jeep, then you'll be the laughing stock of the ants.

I don't think humming bird poop is all that noticable.  In addition if he got it in the cab I probably wouldnt notice with all the crap that blew in from last nights hail storm.

EDIT:

For a while I was thinking WWAFDBD? (what would an FDB do)  and dam the bad luck I didn't have a "fake breast nursing aparatus"
