Man... I was unfortunate enough to have the TV on a few Saturdays ago.

There was this reality type show on about ultimate fighting. These guys lived in a house, and they'd fight, and the loser had to go home.

Turns out, it was a marathon - they played the entire season.

It glued me. I didn't leave the house. By the end it was dark outside, and I was lying in the corner naked in the fetal position.

What a great show.

I don't watch it but... I've seen a few and it just re enforces what I have allready learned... Nothing too fancy survives the first contact in a brawl.   Big guys that are mean and strong wipe up the floor with medium sized guys that are using some form of "disipline" other than "bar room".

you couldn't be more wrong. Usually it is the smaller quicker guys that win.

In the original UFCs there was a guy named royce gracie who was a little brazilian guy and he crushed people with grappling.

The discipline guys win 9 out of 10 times. Every now and then a "bar room" fighter will land a lucky sloppy punch and knock someone out but not very often.

I didn't say fat guys.... I said big strong guys.  Are you saying that the winners are small weak guys?

well now they have weight classes so it's all equal but back in the day it was mostly the more experienced guy. It all depended on the situation i guess. If a big strong guy landed a punch then he would win. If a small quick guy got the fight to the ground opr wore the strong guy out then he would win. so..we're both right :aok

well... back when I boxed... we had weight classes...  lost of good little guys but... A mediocre big guy would allways kick the crap out of a really good little guy..   it is about reach and strength and leverage...

They wouldn't have weight classes if this were not true.

I think in this instance, Laz and Mega are both correct. Today most fighters in the UFC have adapted the same style and have learned how to defend against moves Royce Gracie did. I think if you had a much bigger opponent(20lbs+) he would most likely win do to sheer size and leverage as Laz mentioned.

However, before UFC became well know and more organized it was more of a brawlers game. Royce Gracie did then, what is done now. Back then, most had no idea how to stop it and so he was very successful. Here's a site with some info of his fights...

http://www.fightingmaster.com/legends/royce/ (http://www.fightingmaster.com/legends/royce/)

Here's a little snip:
Six months later Gracie is back at UFC 3 defending his title as the Ultimate Fighting Champion. His first match was against Kimo Leopoldo, a tattooed giant that outweighed Gracie by 80 lbs. Gracie won with an armlock, but had to be helped out of the ring as he was completely exhausted, and did not return to action that night. Three months later he returned to action in UFC 4, tapping Dan "The Beast" Severn in the finals.

The only guy I recall hanging with him is Ken Shamrock who fought him to a draw. And the only guys that I've read that have beat him are guys his own size that fight with his same style. I don't think he'd do so well today b/c everyone has adapted his type fighting style and he even trains some of them now.
