after spending over $3,000,000 to get it there:
San Francisco Shuns Retired USS Iowa (http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/08/20/D8C3PH0G0.html)
The USS Iowa would have gone well with the sub already at the pier, been on it once. What a bunch of clowns they have running the show in SF..
-
nuts.
-
I never thought id see the day id agree with feinstein...
-
WTF??? A slap in the face indeed. Just need one gun from one of those 16" turrets. IIRC, the fella at the Missouri told me one shell would leave a crater that would wipe out a football field. And that they could put 3 shells inside said field from nearly 23 miles away. I say they do that to City Hall in SF and do the place a favor. A smoking crater has to be an improvement over the place now.
-
If you haven't been to SF lately the place is a pit. It is truely run by the inmates.
I have yo agree with StarofAfrica2's plan of action.
Seraphim hell must have just froze over. I knew I would never agree with her either.
-
I think the US flag would look better with only 49 stars.
-
easy for them to make that decision now... but had we not stopped the japanese in the pacific, SF would have been under threat of attack..

Mark the time and date.
I agree 100% with Eagler (and no, I did not lose a bet).

and i thought stupid things like that only happened in our country, maybe it doesnt suck so bad after all.
-
That is so stupid. Couldn't we have it to sit alongside HMS Belfast. All our Battle ships are gone so it would be a good insight into what they used to be like. Go on IWM buy it!
-
Anytime you feel like it, come visit and see the Missouri. She's halfway restored and new sections get finished each year. The Iowa (which that class is named for by the way, being the first) is going to need alot of work to restore before they can open any of it to the public. I say let Stockton have the Iowa, at least they WANT her. Better that, than sitting mothballed and maybe being used for target practice someday. To hell with SF, they had their chance.

Kinda funny really... finestein worked tirelessly to make frisco the lefty capital of Kalifornia... and now she is complaining about them acting like lefties???? bet they feel betrayed by her..
What is really funny is her saying that "this is not the frisco I grew up in" No ****! The frisco she grew up in was pre fienstein and boxer commie liberal... now she wants to return to a time before she got her hands on the place??
this is irony in the extreme... hoisted on her own petard kinda thing.

This is the place where she is laying at the moment. Hopefully that is not the final resting plce for her.

"But city supervisors voted 8-3 last month to oppose taking in the ship, citing local opposition to the Iraq war and the military's stance on gays , among other things"
Remember this IS San Francisco we're talking about

Wonder how hard it would be to just move it to...Iowa?
Which is probably where it should be anyway.
Set it up in some sort of drydock then tourists could see it in its entirety and not just above the waterline
-
Time to boycott sf businesses and products. I'll also send an e-mail to their BBB and dept. of tourism to let them know I won't spend a dime to support their city.
I already do that for chicago after daily's mafia like move on Meigs airfield. Al Capone woulda been proud of him. Now I go 100 miles out of my way to avoid that chity. (sp intentional)

Start a petition to remove california from the USA?

AFAIK, Suisun Bay is never the final resting place. They take the ships elsewhere before cutting them up into pieces.
San Francisco didn't want the ship. Stockton did. Much ado about nothing, IMHO.

Dred, they could never get it there. Missouri put up a good fight trying to get their namesake anchored in St. Louis. Problem was, they couldnt get her up the Mississippi. Even during the wettest season they'd have had sandbars to worry about. And while dredging could have handled alot of that, if they could have overcome the environmental arguments, she just wouldnt fit under the bridges. In the end, the biggest winner for Pearl Harbor's argument to claim her was that they already had a harbor designed for ships of that size. I'm glad they did though. The volunteers they get from Pearl help tremendously in the upkeep. St Louis would have had a hard time doing nearly so much of the work that has been done to restore her. Besides, I think the ship where the Japanese signed the surrender that ended WWII belongs in the Pacific. She'll stand guard over those who died on Dec. 7th, 1941. The Arizona Memorial and the Missouri together symbolize the beginning and the end of the war for us, all in one spot. Having a home where she is not only wanted, but that can afford to take care of her has made all the difference. Thats the only thing i worry about with the Iowa going to Stockton. Can they really afford it? In SF they have help from the Navy, if necessary. What do they have in Stockton besides space? I'm glad they want to give her a home, but she's a high maintenance lady.

I heard the big MO is pretty cool. When I was stationed at K-bay we were planning a mess night and considering holding it at the MO. IIRC they have a big banquet room and can even accomidate guests overnight.
-
It was better off just leaving it in Newport, RI at the the Navy Facility there..At least she was pierside and could be tended to. Shame to have it in a nest of ships like that. Hope it moves to Stocton soon.

The most likely alternative to Suisan Bay is Brownsville, Texas.

You decide which is worse. ;)

Park her beside the Texas. She would would be appreciated and honored as she should be.

Wow. The mothball fleet has certainly dwindled. I remember crossing the Martiez Bridge twice a day 30 years ago, and the fleet was at least 6 times that size then. :(

Look under Special Events. They can host groups up to 850 ppl on the Fantail. They have more exclusive locations as well, although smaller.

Just for giggles, this is a short movie that shows the loading procedures for the big 16" guns.

And since this thread is really about the Iowa, how about her home page as well?
