I have been looking at some old Porsche's (thinking about getting one, older of course). What engine sound really sticks out for you? Something that you here coming and you know exactly what it is. For me, it has to be the 6 cylinder boxer from Porsche.
-
There's the ubiquitous Harley Davidson twin (the radial-8 engine that's missing 6 cylinders) which sounds, as everyone knows, like 'potato-potato-potato-potato'.
I really like the BMW K bikes with the triples (like the K75). They sounded like sewing machines.

Yup, that's another that stinks out for me. The Ducati is also one.

There's this ford focus with all the body trim and auto zone accessories one can buy. He's got a cold air intake and performance exaust complete with crome trashcan muffler.
It sounds like an old van with bad wiring when you hear the engine electrical whine through the 2 4" inch speakers while the radio is on the AM band.
:p
-
Don't worry, GS, you can put a ground loop isolator in your Focus that'll make the nasty whine stop coming out of your speakers. :D
-
640 HP Ford 429 Cobra Jet in my Ranchero back in high school as she decellerates from 110mph and blows the fiberglass packing out of the Cherry Bombs.
-
Yamaha RD350LC; ring a ding ding!
Suzuki 750 GT; very few two stoke tripples around; none with mixer pipes like the Kettle.
Laverda Jota (180 degree crank version) on Marshall exhausts; sounds like a Spitfire (I kid you not)
Laverda Jota 120 degree crank: sounds like a fifteis Ferrari (it's all to do with multiples of threes :-) )
Ford Cosworth BDA Escort with twin 40 Webers; it's not the exhaust; it's the induction.
Austin morris 100 series 6 cylinder (the original motor in Laz's Healy); nothing sounds nicer on the over-run.
And any good Yank V8.

Best engine sound ever (http://avanimation.avsupport.com/sound/P-51.wav)
This one's good too (http://avanimation.avsupport.com/sound/Mosquito.wav)

340/383/440 engine in a Charger/Road Runner with those 2 1/2" exhausts, Hooker headers, and glass packs. Sweetest sounding engines I have ever heard.
Nothing ever had quite the sound of those 60's Dodge/Plymouth engines.
-
the lamborghini countach always was a favorite,
but the shelby cobra has got to be the sweetest sound ever.
-
The Diablo at idle, just to hear the valves tink-tink-tink :D
-
Am I the only one that likes the sound of... no engine at all?
Nice to just sit back and enjoy the sound of Sjostakovitsj or Strauss while sitting comfy in my Jaguar doing 100mph. Tie tossed in the back seat and my rolex telling me the working day and week is over.
ahh... sweeet.
:lol i wish

That's also the sound I want my spaceship to make when I start it up.

My good friend, I'm afraid that it was YOUR head that suffered from an unwelcome and undetected overflight. Please note the presence of the crap-eating-grin smiley face and review your book of 'traditional comic foils'.

I knew I should have got a hair cut today. I was rather insulted, to think I'd own a focus.

Or something with a few more dollars in the engine. (not for the bandwidth challenged)

12 cyl - Ferrari Colombo Type 125 V-12 (250 GTO, 250 TR, etc.) - 6 twin choke Webers.
8 - cyl Cosworth DFV V-8 - THE racing motor.
6 - cyl (tie)
Nissan S20 I-6 (Hakasuka GT-R)
Ferrari Dino V-6 (Lancia Stratos)
4 - cyl
Subaru EJ20T H-4 - Boxer Rumble
Don't care for the sound of V-10s or twins. Haven't heard enough V-16's to comment. :)
-
The engine sounds in the movie Bullit were just plain awesome.
( The scene witht the Stang crow hopping after the missed turn wasn`t bad either. :) )
To me there is nothing sweeter than the sound of a V twin, either at idle or eating up the ribbon.
-
I think my next project will be to build a high performance electric vehicle, but to put include a speaker system to make it sound like a Plymouth Road Runner. After all, what good is a high performance vehicle if it doesn't make noise? What are we, up to the level of THX 1138?

3406 Cat 15 liter twin turbo pulling 45 pounds of boost putting 800+ hp to the ground. fuel milage sucks but you should see the faces on the girls who flash you then cant out run ya.
-
uh... seeker... the original motor in my Healey was an austin 4 cylinder. They didn't go to the six till 57.
rocrat... how do you get 640 hp to breath through a set of cherry bombs?
Any high performance motor sounds kinda cool. Any motor that doesn't sound cool.... can with a little work.
You guys ever hear a 270 GMC punched out to 302 with a wayne twelve port head, isky full race cam (that's what they called em back then) and three dueces?
lazs

3 1/2in cb's would do it .
i made 728hp thru 3 inch turbo's years ago ...(427 fe)
nothing like the sound of a big crank pontiac and a tri-power or a rolls griffin.
-
I'd have to say the sound I love the sound of a good tuned 4 banger.. I'm not talking hon-duh's. I'm talking high powered open wheeled cars.. like Formula Dodges. things like that. They just screeem...

1971 Porsche 917 with its V12...
Still holds the Le Mans record for most laps in the 24 hours.
pretty nice sound for an engine.
