How about some self propelled artillery, such as the M7 Priest, or the M8 155mm howitzer. Give the ground guys a beyond visual range attack capability.
Use them in a formation like the bombers (3 guns) and they can have the land attack mode like the guns on the cruisers.
Lots of these things running around in WWII.
Katusha rocket launcher would be cool to.
-
I think this is should be on the wishlist. I would rather see more aircraft than towable field guns. :)
-
This is the wishlist.
-
you would need to add something like the fa156 fiesler storch or an L1-5 to perform FAC duties but it would be fun, especially for whacking beached CVs at bases that don't have shore batteries
-
Also, what about being able to man the ack in a town?
-
I believe this idear deserves a bump. Was wondering if there are more then 4 of us who would enjoy to see it.
-
i'd love to see artillery
-
i am all for Artillery! :noid
-
Bring it on!
-
bring on the artillery:aok
-
lets pound them into the ground!:aok :t
-
We need atillery.
and improved explosions for artillery hits on land and water.
-
Not that I spend any time in the GV's, but artillery sounds pretty cool. It would add a new dimension to the game.
-
:aok

Me likes:aok
Of course this would have to be added after HTC gives me my Wirbelwind. Iv'e been waiting forever & day for that ride.
BTW HTC, how's the Wirbbie coming along?
Have fun

?? is that the flak with 4 turrets?

4 turrets!?!?! Holy smokes! :)
1 Turret with a quad 20mm gun:D
-
YEA thats what i ment by 4 turrets. Its like an m16 but in a flak with 4 20mms like you said..that would be hard to get near.
-
Yes my friends, the Wirbelwind is not only my favorite anti-vulch ride, it is great for picking up chicks:aok

Isn't she a bute;)

There was a comment on a site (I think SimHQ) some time back from Pyro talking about towed artillery pieces. But that was a couple of years ago and I don't feel like googling it.

Artillery has been brought up before and got a lot of support.
Observer aircraft (like the Storch) would be cool too - but I think they need an extra role or two (like picking up downed pilots, marking targets on the map, etc.) to make them worthwhile.
I'm all for it - it adds a new dimension to the game.

As for marking targets on the map. A observer sircarft could mark the position of last known co-ords of lets say a mission or a goon. And it slowly fades away over time. The marks would only be seen on the channel that player is tuned to.
-
The artillery channel?:D I'm all for the long range bombardin and please god a wirblewind.

Artillery would be vulcher's dream: ability to kill planes on a field from far away and behind a mountain. Too easy, don't you think? :) Also, you could destroy a town without exposing yourself to defending GVs.

-
Rate of fire would prevent vulching - besides, an artillery target is pretty soft - one tiffie and it'll all be over. Mind you, it's got to be found first!
-
remember when artillery fires it doesn't really suppress the flah or smoke from the barrel and you reload em like an MP5 i'd say it would be like 10 shots a min or something and the range wouldn't be to far unless you had an emplaced artillery on top of a 15k mountain I meen nowadays our American Artillery can go what like 30 to 50 miles?
-
Six seconds per round is a bit faster than most artillery.
-
Towed artillery - difficult to model quickly (but nice)
Motorised artillery - easier to model, we are almost there anyway.
Mortars - difficult to model again
In WW2 I understood that FOOs were needed to call shot, but others (more experienced than I) disagree.
-
:aok A fun idea and more things to straff on the ground. ;)
-
If you based it on the german 88MM it could be used as
AA to reach the High bombers for base defense.
or anti-tank or move it to attack a base or town.
It would be a soft target easier to Knock out then a hanger but harder then a field ack. only one per player or maybe 3 like bombers.
But you would need a Forward Observer for in direct firing.. This way if the FO is taken out the gun is blind. If the FO is on the Ground he could be in an M3 or maybe on foot like a downed pilot.
Add a storch or O2 plane. it would have no armerment. Only smoke smoke rockets for marking targets and radio to call in targets. Maybe like others suggested be able to land and pick up downed pilot.
air speed only 100 MPH or less. Very easy to knock down.
With the FO easy to knock out it would limit the power of the artillery when it was hiding. It would take a 2 or three man team for the artillery to be effective With only the artillery gunner getting points. This would even things up some.
-
i think it should take 2 to man the artilery. 1 will fly a observer plane and spot the target and tell the artillery man whitch base 2 fire on (4 example A1). the artilery man will command 5 artilery peices like how 1 guy commands 3 bombers. when the artilery fires it will hit any wear within a 600yd raidus
-
Thing is, if the FO is taken out that doesn't stop someone already on the site (another GV, or a buff, or whatever) from telling a gunner short, long, left or right,

Are you saying like if you want use an artillery you HAVE to have someone be an observer plane?

-
Not HAVE to, but to expect to HIT anything, I'd think.

Holy crap Moil! Then you would only need 3 LTARs per field!
That would be awesome :aok
-
Thanks Minnow,
It's an awesome AA platform, the prob with it is, the turret is easy to knockout and doesn't have the reach of the Ostwind. However I still think it would make a great addition to the game along with the Flak36 pictured below.

OK to do Artillery would be SO EASY in this game it's not even funny. I have some solutions here for those that might pay attention.
First thing is we need an Artillery piece to operate. Easy deal here because we already have a 5" and 8" piece modeled onboard the ships correct? You take the single 5" mount on the CV's and put it on a vehicle. What vehicle do you use. Easy answer to that one also.
M3 Halftrack is now a T-19 GMC (Gun Motor Carriage 105mm)
M3A1 Gun Motor Carriage (http://www.eagle.ca/~harry/vehicles/halftrck/m3m3a1.htm)
Panzer IV is now a Sdkfz 165 Hummel
Hummel (http://www.wargamer.com/Hosted/Panzer/artillery2.html)
T-34 is now a SU-122
SU-122 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU-122)
OK we now have several vehicles with Artillery pieces on them, with only needing a limited amount of modeling done by the staff at HTC. Should be easy for them to modify what they already have right?? They would need to set the end stops for the traverse of the guns, and basically give them all the 5" single mount off the CV's we already have. It's close enough to the guns these things had to work for our purposes in the game.
Fielding the things would be easy too. Make it possible to take a formation of guns (like bombers) for a modest perk cost (say 5 points for a formation) and free if a single. They would use the same targeting system already used by the ship guns when used in "land" mode. They would also have a direct fire capability if your in sight of the target and not doing indirect fire. Give them the abillity to fire a red colored smoke round for spotting purposes and the forward observers in other GV's or aircraft can call in adjustments for fire. Regular vehicle supplies can resupply the guns with shells from a M3 half track.
Give them all say a 15 second delay from the time they stop to being able to fire the gun, as these things did not fire on the move.
I'm sure some things might need to be "tweaked" to get it perfect but the concept is so simple I'm surprised it's not been done already.
As a former "Red Leg" / "Gun Bunny" / Artilleryman I would LOVE to see this in the game. Come on HiTech give us some BIG guns to play with.

Great post Hornet. :aok

Brilliant! Definately! Come on HTC.

I like :aok
Of course you'll need some Wirbies setup around the Arty to protect them:D
Great ideas tho
