The Radeon 9800 Pro AGP 128 meg
Blows.
Of course this is what I have. As I look at the results of the optimization tests I am really disappointed with my video card. Considering the price and the power suppply it takes to fire it up, this is mediocre performance. Down't matter what system you haveit on.
So what card is best in AH? The test results are going to be revealing.
I'm making out my shopping list now.

Uh...
EDIT: Sorry, forgot the pertinent information. If you look at the test, this is Nomde's results after he made a couple of changes to his configuration. before the changes were made, his performance was not good at all.

Killjoy2, the 9800pro is a good card. Do you have updated drivers for it? If not check out http://www.omegadrivers.net and get the latest Radeon driver.
-
I have no good performance either, I actually get worse FPS with the optest then I do with normal AH. Will post results tomorrow in the correct thread.
-
You guys that are hainv performance issues with the 9800Pro, try this.
Set the maximum texture size to 512 and run the optest. Then set the resolution in the game to 1280x1024 and run the optest. For these runs, disable AA and AF. See what the results are like.
Thanks
NOTE: I would also suggest using the Catalyst 4.12 drivers, without the Catalyst Control Center for this particular video card.

Shuzzy,
I have a question. Does HT want the FPS box in the video setting checked on "unlimited"? Also does he want all the preloading textures checked too? The readme was kinda confusing.
Falcon
PS I'm getting ready to do OPTest #1..
-
Unlimited FPS, yes. Just note if what preload options you have set.
The big thing is making sure you have set all the in-game options for the video to defaults.
EDIT: I am thinking the 9800Pro is not very efficient with the 1024 textures. I think 512 is optimal, but I am looking forward to seeing some resulting comparisons of this. It did seem to be Nomde's issue.
-
Duke's optest run pretty much shows the problem.
You cannot run with 1024 texture sizes AND AA on as there is simply not enough video RAM to hold everything. This will tank the 9800Pro's performance.
Set to 512 with AA on, then it will run much better.

Hey skuzzy , why does it seem my results are so high compared with anyone elses . Ive found that of all the drivers the omega 4.11 drivers give me the best FPS and ive tested all cats from 4.8 to 5.8's. Everything looks good in the game , but is their something that these drivers might not be rendering? My results seem really high . No AA or AF , rest set to high quality . Even with 2X AA the results arent much different , if at all. Maybe you might want to check out these drivers see if their is something special about them..... Omega 2590_7.exe's <

they are talking about an ati 128mb 9800 pro and you have a x800pro 256mb card
-
Not to mention 2x the processor speed I'm using
-
LOL i realize the differences ,I wasnt comparing it to killjoy , but others with roughthly the same set up , i should have started a new thread , just didnt want to add another one on the same subject .....

A high number of people are using 1024 textures with AA turned on. This is going to hurt thier performance a lot. My guess is they think they have a screaming fast video card, so they should be able to do it.
Point of fact, it has little to do with the speed of the video card. It has everything to do with the amount of video RAM required to do it. If your card has 512MB of video RAM, you can get away with 2X AA and use 1024 texture size in the game without performance issues.
I have explained this many times in the Technical Support forums and have provided formulas for calculating what combinations you can safely run without starving your video card's resources.
-
An annoying development in the drivers has been that the option 'no AA' does not exist in the latest drivers at all. 2X is the minimum forced setting outside 'application preference'.
-
"Application preference" is as good as 'no AA' for Aces High II, as we do not enable AA.

Why don't u have the option in the game settings for this? Along with AF. When we have it turned on in the video control panel, its set that way for all games regardless. If we had an option to select it in the game it be alot more convienent for us as we don't have to change it everytime for another game.
-
Hey Skuzzy,
I changed drivers to 4.12 and textures to 512 as you suggested.
Big improvement.
Yes when I got the 9800 128 meg card I thought I was getting a screaming video card. I upgraded from a 64 meg card and thought, "well hey 128 meg ought to do it." Imagine my suprise.
I still have 2x aa enabled. I'll try doing without. But I'm getting pretty good frames now. This project is real good for the game.
Now can you fix my tanks. I selected Tiger but got "Paper Tiger" instead. It took 4 hits to and Osti and I only got an assist. I took one hit from a panz to the front of the Tiger and I'm dead. I'm sure its connected to the new drivers.

what is the big difference btwn 18, 512, 1024 textures?
I have resorted to 128 textures for my ati 9800 and it still looks fine.
am I missing something?
-
I don't get it either.... Doesn't matter what res I run or however many textures - I never get over 60 fps. And yes, I have it set at unlimited fps. No matter what I do, it seems to stay at around 60 fps, unless I do the shift F4 and then it drops to around 30. I am confused.....

You forgot to turn off v-sync while testing, also your refresh rate is set too low for normal gameplay, you should be able to set it to at least 85 @ 1280 x 1024 res on most monitors.

Skuzzy - I have an ATI 9700Pro using the latest drivers. My FPS went up 115% with the test executable. Before, 20-30fps, now I'm getting 60-80fps at a busy burning airport.

Refresh rate of 60 is normal for a LCD based screen. But if he has a CRT (normal tube monitor) he should immediately raise the refresh rate.
Flickering causes eyewear and general stress on the body. Tiredness, headaches and in some extreme cases migraine.

Skuzzy, having some weird problems...
I've done the same test several times, but almost every time I get different results. I don't have any background programs running. All settings are as they should be and texture size is 512 now. 1024 works fine aswell though.
The highest FPS I've had stable is about 116 looking from tower. However, most of the times I do the test I get these results.
512 res textures. 1280x1024 resolution.

Those are the results I've gotten most times now...
Intel P4 2.4 CPU with Hyperthreading, 512mb 1066 RDRAM. ATI Radeon non Pro BIOS flashed to Pro. Clock speed is at normal low 290 @ 270. Omega Drivers, latest version.
Running at 370 @ 290 I get another 30-40 Fps in tower/full vis and about 10 more in ground mode and 3-5 in P51. Only tested overclocked with Both object and terrain set to on.
P51 full vis I get about 3-5 more.
