Title: Carrier Smoke and 'barrier balloons'...
Post by: 2Hawks on August 23, 2005, 04:45:51 PM
Ok, it's been suggested before and with pitcures even.

Ships in WWII had smoke they could deploy to foil the aim of bombers. Also deployed were baloons that had bombs attached to long cables. when an aircraft wing caught a cable it hauled the bomb up to the plane and BAM.

I know of several tacticts that would make defending a CV much easier. And much more realistic. The Commander of a given CV should be in charge of deploying both.

Dan.

Adding to this would be a captain for the carrier that could steer the carrier  with in the space of the escorts similiar to the picture you see of ships turning to avoid airplan attacks.  you could use the joystick to make the turn. the limit would be 30 degrees right or left once you let go the Cv return to its normal position. between the escorts. this would make it harder for bombers to hit the carrier.

ROFL, and be endless fun jinking the carrier just before touchdown... I can already see hte blood boiling... ;)

But it's a good idea for avoiding bombers. ;)

i may be mistaken but i am pritty sure barrage balloons (as they were called) were only deployed when ships were stopped as the wind would cause them to break loose. a more effective version of the balloon was just secured to the ground with a heavy duty cable that would cut off an airplane's wing.

I've seen photos of aircraft deployed smoke, apparently they
used both chemical tanks and even smoke bombs.  Bostons were
used to lay screens at Dieppe for the landings in 42.

I think this would be kind of neat as it's just an ordnance thing
as opposed to a new aircraft.  Not sure how practical it would be
in the MA, but having a bunch of aircraft lay smoke over your
battlegroup sounds like a blast:aok
