Title: Study on dreams probes politics
Post by: DrDea on August 24, 2005, 04:08:01 PM
A new study, and I know they can be slanted, has shown Liberals to have more restless sleep, odder dreams and more dreams of Homosexuality.  Republicans were shown to have more restfull sleep with fewer dreams and those dreams more of reality. Before 2000 Republicans were more inclined twords bad dreams.
In my personal encounters I have found several, the majority,of Liberals either suffering from ADD or they are Bi Polar.I would say the ratio of people I have encountered on a regular basis lean 85% Liberal and 15% Republican .The question BEGS to be asked is Liberalism caused by either or both of these mental conditions?Im talking the way far out left here. Now before the flamefest begins think about this.Who do you know that has ADD or Bi polarity and what political views do they have.Im intrested to see what the ratio is.

I have mild ADD. Really small dosage Concerta-E perscription. I'd say I'm Libertarian, but I voted Republican.

My bi-polar friend is a staunch "WAR FOR OIL!" democrat.

A guy I worked with was a literal "card carrying democrat". I thought he had ADD & needed meds... turns out he was just a coke & meth head.

The rest of my "friends" have pretty much every disorder in the book. They would have voted for Kerry, but for the most part, they got high and didn't bother.

My staunch, "RUSH IS RIGHT!", right-wing friends, in general tend not to do drugs, have kids, but tend to vote party instead of issue.

edit-
Almost forgot my roomate's brother. Very straight-laced, never does drugs, rarely drinks. At first, I thought his bush bashing was just his form of rebelling against his conservative family. Then, after some lengthy conversations and debates, determined he doesn't belive in personal responsibility. At heart he's a socialist.

I would guess that 80% of the inmates at my prison are Democrat's.  Don't forget I spend over 12 hour on duty at a time.   9 out of 10 days I work the cell blocks and have 120 inmates that I'm responsable for so I know these guys very well.  So don't bother asking me for stupid charts or whatever.

It was on FOX his afternoon.Thats why I said I know they can be slanted.I believe it was a Berkley experiment. But this is more about personal experiences, not the study.

Sleep and Dream Patterns of Political Liberals and Conservatives

Paper Presented at the 22nd Annual Conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams

Berkeley, California  --  June 25, 2005

 Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D.

The Graduate Theological Union and John F. Kennedy University

Abstract

This study examines the dreams of American liberals and conservatives in order to highlight patterns that might correlate with their opposing political views.  A total of 234 participants (134 self-described liberals, 100 self-described conservatives) completed a lengthy sleep and dream survey, and their answers revealed several notable patterns:

n       The liberals and conservatives in this study are not radically different species, at least when it comes to sleep and dreaming.  People of both political persuasions share a common substrate of basic human sleep and dream experience.

n       Conservatives sleep more soundly, with fewer dreams.  Liberals have more restless sleep and a more active dream life.  Conservatives sleep somewhat longer, with better sleep quality; they recall fewer dreams, but report more lucid dreams (especially conservative men).  Liberals (particularly liberal women) have worse sleep quality, recall a greater number and variety of dreams, and have more dreams of homosexuality.

n       Liberals and conservatives report a roughly equal proportion of bad dreams and nightmares.  This is different from my earlier study (using dreams gathered from 1996-2000), when the conservatives had many more nightmarish dreams than the liberals.  In the present study (using dreams gathered post-September 11, 2001 to the end of 2004), the conservative frequency of negative dreams is somewhat less, while the liberal frequency is much higher.  It appears liberals have become more upset and troubled in their dreams, while conservatives have become less so in theirs.

n       The dreams of liberals are more bizarre than the dreams of conservatives.  This is consistent with my earlier findings.  Liberals have more dreams with unusual, distorted, fantastic elements than conservatives, whose dreams are more likely to portray normal characters, settings, and activities.

The similarities and differences identified here may be artifacts of my study’s small sample size.  Only future research can determine that.  In the meantime, any interpretation remains provisional.  With that caution in mind, if we follow the research premise that dream content is continuous with waking life emotional concerns, the results of this study may be interpreted as follows:  These dreams provide an accurate reflection of contemporary American politics.  The current political weakness of liberals (especially liberal women) is reflected in their troubled sleep and varied, agitated dreaming.  The current political strength of conservatives (especially conservative men) is reflected in their sounder sleep and diminished frequency and variation of dreaming.

“I was friends with George W. Bush and we were working together on his ranch.  I was happy to be there.”

36-year old conservative woman from Pennsylvania

“I had a nightmare that Bush had won the Presidential election by getting 80% of the vote.”

23-year old liberal woman from Ohio

As far as I can tell, she just lives in Berkely this is her educational background: The Graduate Theological Union and John F. Kennedy University.

Echoing Xargos' statements somewhat, I would like to say that the inmates at the prison where my brother works, and the juveniles at my unit nearly all have a couple of things in common.

They do not believe in personal responsibility, and the majority support Robin Hood style politicians because they believe society  owes them something.

Nash,

Conduct your own study of prison inmates my man!  I'm not just saying that to make a point...it is literally true.  Far more inmates support Democratic candidates and causes than support Republican candidates and causes.

Ya know, to be honest... this is kind of interesting.

Fine. I'm willing to concede that perhaps there is some fundamental, telling aspect to the study.

I just don't know what that telling aspect is actually telling us.

But lets take the whole thing on a joy ride, just for giggles: Liberals sleep distractedly, and conservatives sleep the sleep of the just.

I don't know about you, but I'm not judged on my fantasy dream world. My worth to society, and my actions, are not assessed through the fact that just last night, I was flying on a magic carpet, minding my own business, when suddenly an ice cream cone materialized into my left hand, compelling me to grind it into my forehead, which enabled me to land with a studied precision on the tip of Jack Black's nose.

On the other hand (and since this study attempts to provide a distinction between conservatives and liberals), everybody knows that George Bush is in bed before the afternoon airing of Oprah. If you told me that Bush sleeps like a log, I wouldn't doubt it for a second. Yet, in the actual awake portion of his life, he cannot bring himself to make a decision without catastrophically botching it up.

Uhm... Pat Robertson sleeps like a log, and upon waking up starts calling for political executions or the deaths of Supreme Court Justices.

Rove sleeps like a log, and sells out the.... well, you get where this is going.

So at the end of the day...what are we to take away from that study?

It may be more enlightening than it first appears.

Personally, I'd rather keep my insanity to the wee hours. To exhaust it. To get my ya yas out in bed, at four in the morning, where I can't do any real or consequential damage.

Aw Nash...I just think liberals have bad dreams because they see the real world as being full of flaws, threats, and conspiracies that demand immediate, drastic, and culture shaking changes by intellectual elites.

Therefore, their dreams are haunted by us illiterate, knuckle-dragging, common-man Neanderthals.

Boogah-boogah ya'll!
