This has always bugged me but how about making the "sortie type" (ie, Fighter vs. Attack) auto-select based on loadout. When you add the first bomb/rocket it selects "attack", if you only have drop tanks then it assumes "fighter". Leave the buttons in the hanger so a person could over-ride if they really feel the need.
Second, give us two gun convergence settings for aircraft that are fighter/attack capable. I like to strafe and my convergence preferences when attacking are different than when working fighters. Connect it to the sortie type so when I load that first bomb my sortie type goes to Attack and my Convergence goes to setting #2. Again, the over-ride would allow you to mix and match if you so desire. If you always use the same convergence, just set them the same or don't set a second one.

Did a search before posting my wish. Who said search doesn't work well?
What I want is for the loadouts for Fighter and Attack to save separately. But I had not considered convergence.
I don't remember a time when there was no sortie selection buttons. Must have been taking a break at the time.
Not sure if the convergence thing is a big deal for others. It isn't for me. I bomb GVs, use rockets on the wirbles they re-up in and guns on fighters that come after me. So I can live with same convergence.

Great idea, I'm actually all for this.
Also, for anyone else posting in this thread, the IN call does not apply here, actually read the rules.

what if I want to do an attack sortie and I'm not carrying any ords?

what if I want to do an attack sortie and I'm not carrying any ords?
Then you had to go to the hangar and click on "attack" every friggin time you are taking off. ;)

actually I quite like this, I'm always flying the wrong sortie mode :bhead
as long as you can switch from fighter to attack manually as well for strafing sorties (cant think of any good reason to do it the other way round).

But what about aircraft that have the Bomber / Attack option? How would it know which option to choose for those?

My problem is, with this proposed setup I would constantly have to click on that button for every sortie in some planes.

For bomber/attackers, I would say leave it manual only.
And perhaps have a "manual selection" list you can add planes to. Every plane thats not on the list has automatic selection of sortie type.

I should have posted a quote from Soda in a new thread as I comlpetely misred what he was getting at.
What I am suggesting is that when you go to hanger and select P47D40 and click on fighter it gives you the sett up you last used in fighter mode (in my case 50% and DT). When you go into hanger and select P47D40 and click attack you get last saved loadout in attack mode (in my case the full ord Monty). If you just want to fly what you did the last time in that ride nothing would change from the way it is now.
I brought Soda into it to credit him with the convergence idea that I had not considered.

[Fighter] .. [Attack] .. [Auto]
Solves that little problem, yeah?

^ nice :aok

its not often for me except in the typhie where sometimes I'd rather have the fuel than the bombs. I'd just have to remember to hit the auto button after ... ah ok I see what you mean :)
