I don't get into a bomber much for a couple reasons. One, I'm not good at it ( I can't hit a barn 10 feet below me), and two I have a real problem.
On bombing: I have been in TA, gotten to Alt, stable speed with doors open and lined up. Calibrate and I still miss!
The other real problem is when I have the planes in auto level and jump into a gunner spot, the planes move with the guns. When I jump back to the pilot seat, I'm going a completely different direction. What am I doing wrong???
It's not that I'm new to the game, I've played it off and on for some time now and I've always had this problem, even back in AHI.
Any and all help/advise is wanted.

Make sure before you calibrate you open your doors bout a good 1/2 sector before your target.
And for the gunning thing, if you use rudder when your in a site you change directions.
-
Thanks, but as I said, i have everything stable, alt and speed. I have even had it that way for a full sector and am still off.
The rudders! Okay, i will have to try and not twist my stick when gunning!
Thanks :aok
-
WHat type of salvos do you use ?
-
I have tried from 1 all the way up to 10.
-
Second what the others said. Plus, check your true airspeed before the target comes into sight. Calibrate using a landmark at the same alt as your target before you reach your actual target. Compare the calibrated speed with your IAS. If it differs, recalibrate. Be sure you dont start the calibration process when you cannot keep the crosshairs steady on target. Pick a landmark, staedy your crosshair on it. When you feel its spot on, press Y to begin calibration, and keep going for at least 5 or 10 seconds. Check calibr. speed with IAS.
Regards,
Matt
-
Make sure your leval with doors open the last 5 or 10 miles into target,,,,,use rudder trim to make last minute course adjustments
I usualy calibrate twice at least,,,,first time is about 5 miles from target,,,,,so i can then use rudder trim in bomsight to make course corrections as needed
Then i calibrate again for about 20 to 30 seconds when im about
1 min from target,,this insures little or no speed change when i drop from when i calibrated.
As far a gunnin,,,I have a twisty also, and that bothers me too,
but ive become better at avoiding rudder input...I always would rather find a gunner tho if im dealing with cons on the IP

When you practice, start off with a large number of the smaller bombs. Salvo them all and set a delay of .07. Once your good at hitting your target with those, work your way down to larger bombers and smaller salvos. When I bomb with 1,000lbers I use salvo of 4 and a delay of .05.
-
also,,
the most popular mistake made IMO, is guys rollin buffs from fields too close to the target, roll em from a base or two back
-
I guess one of the problems is that I can't get the crosshairs on the target. The clipboard sits on top and always has. That has not changed, no matter what I've tried, even a reinstall. So I have always used the pointer to calibrate. And yes, I have tried to recalibrate several time. So in short the only time I have ever hit anything was on low level carpet bombing on a town or factory.
-
^ Agreed. Give yourself plenty of alt and time to line up on your target.
You know that hitting ESC will minimize the clipboard right ?
And when coming in on a target, if the skies are clear, use [ and ] to slowly zoom in on your target, zoom in all the way for best precision.
-
Oh yeah, I know Esc min clipboard. As for distance, that was why I went into TA to practice. I could get alt and speed stable without having to worry about fighters. I would takeoff at least 5 sectors away, level after 3 sectors and open doors when I leveled out. Calibrate when base is in sight and once again just before dropping. When I drop, I would drop one just before the target, one on the target and one right after the target is in the crosshairs. Just to see how far off I was. I would miss with all of them!
If I can't get this, I'm going to forget bombing unless it is low level carpet!
-
Hmm, Im stumped, only thing I have is make sure the crosshairs have completly stopped moving when you calibrate.
-
I think, from what I've read, and everyone has said, that my biggest problems is the fact that my clipboard map is covering the crosshairs and I have to use the pointer to click on target. And as to how to fix that, I have no idea. But it has been like that from day one.
Anyway, I will retry everything everyone says to try. :aok

Go to the web site http://www.netaces.org and read the section on level bombing. It may still be a bit out of date but you will probably find what you are doing wrong. You no longer have to hold the cross hairs on a point when calibrating. Just level, open doors hit "U" to enter calibration and then "Y'" key to calibrate. Hold the y key for at least 2 seconds - 10 seconds works well then hit u again to exit calibtation. When you are close to target line up using the top of the cross hair and recal again..5 to 10 second cal is good. Drop when target is in the center of the cross hair. The cal status on the left should all be green. There currently is no wind so bombing is VERY easy. You can kill hangers from 30k. Again check out the web site above.
Cheers:cool:

If worse come to worse film it and send it to HTC.
-
Thanks Maddog, I will do look at the site.
BlueJ - That is an idea. I had never thought about filming it.

Didnt take the time to read thru all the answers but:
1. Put more deadband in the rudder so you dont move it so easy while gunning. Im guessing you have a twisty stick.
2. Bombload: Take 1000 lbers. Drop 2 on hangers , 1 on VH.
3. If bombing town dont aim at bldgs, aim at green areas in between. Imagine a blast radius as you look thru bombsight. 3-4 bombs with 1000lbers is all you need in one pass thru town. Any more is wasted in overlap.
4. Open doors early. THEN calibrate..about 1/2 a sector out. Then as you approach recalibrate. The shorter the time span betweenyour last calibration and the time you drop, the more accurate you'll be.
5. When lining up on a base/town, dont move stick at all. Line up a long ways out on auto pilot level. ANY input you make will effect drop.
6. When going around for another pass. Give yourself a ways to turn, and restabilze speed. This is where I miss most often. I rush the turn, and my speed isnt stable on second pass.
-
Question:
Do you slow down and then let your speed steady out before calibrating?
I try to slow my speed down to about 180 -190

Do you have the same "plane moves with gun" problem in GVs? I've had that several times and it usually fixes itself.
-
Yeah, I do! But what fixes it?
-
For me, it's just a hiccup. It resets itself on the next tank, usually. Sometimes it messes up in the middle of the run and then fixes itself. I've never done anything to fix it.
-
No with me, I can go in circles if I'm in the gun and the tank/m16 is going. I will not correct itself anytime.
-
I leave my doors shut and open them right before I drop and I have no problem hitting stuff. The reason I do it is that I seem to get a more stable calibration. Maybe its just my imagination.
-
Do you slow down and then let your speed steady out before calibrating?
I never slow down unless I don't have enough room to get to full speed. usually only takes a sector in any bomber even 234's to get your speed leveled off.
Just to add a little help here are some speeds from Flayds book of bombing..
All speeds listed are at full throttle, 10K and doors open except for the JU88, those I flew with only external 500kg ord.
B17-244.......B24-258......B26-256
JU88-259......KI67-300....AR234-429
Just a sample. at full speed and 10K you should be real close to those speeds when you drop. Speeds will vary a bit if you are a couple feet higher or lower. And when bombing if your bombing speed is a bit higher than your true air speed just release a bit befor your target and a bit later if you are slower.
Also speed may vary a bit with bomb load .... in the 17's I usually take the 6 1000's, 24's 8 1000's, 26's 4 1000's, JU's 4 500kg, KI's 8 100kg and the 234's were done with the 3 500kg.
Like I said this is just a sample if anyone has any questions just look up FLAYDone on the roster, I would be happy to help anyone in the TA or MA just ask. I'm usually on alot of the day....and night for that matter. :)

HUH? Why you cliking on stuff? Just cal for speed with crosshairs on a single point. Minimize clipboard except to check cal speed to TAS. We haven't cliked on anything in ages(years?).
As far as everybody calibrating and re-calibrating, you don't have to. As long as the TAS matches or is within 3-5 mph of your cal speed, there is no reason to re-calibrate.
As my bomb load lightens and my speed increases, I will adjust throttle so the speeds match. No need to endlessly re-cal.
-
GATO please read this it's a step by step procedure but firstly......
Go to setup / controls / joystick / settings. On left page drop down and high light "Rudder". On right page move "Dead Band up about 5mm. Move "Damping up at least 1 to 2 cm. This will stiffen up your rudder input. Thats to say it won't be so twitchy. Sounds like your rudder is to sensitive. Feel free to mess with damper dead dand settings untill your rudder input feels "positive". When bombing you need a rudder which i will explain below. For example perposses we will use b 24's with 50 % fuel 12 x 500's configuration.
Step 1) Get the B24's to required Alt. Set required salvo and delay. Example salvo 4 delay 0.14
2) Get b24's speed steady and constant which is usually flat out top speed in that Alt.
3) Use "clipboard" map for "ruff" direction then retract "clipboard after getting a heading. You will no longer need the map from now on except on egress.
4) Go to position 5 (front gunner) and press "Z" then fully zoom in using "[ ]" bracket keys.
5) Stay in 5 and press F3 for external view. ( F1 will take you back to gunner position and "1" will take u back to cockpit)
6) Once long vis attained in target field use "RUDDER" to line up on target. Do NOT move joystick left or right "RUDDER" only. Then go to F1 ( gunner possition ) move joystick "down" pointing at target, VH for example. Again use "RUDDER" to fine tune the line up. You should not be moveing stick left or right just the twisty rudder input. Now press "Z" to exit Zoom. Note that this all takes place from long vis before we use bomb site.
7) Press "1" to get back in cockpit then open bomb bay doors "O" then press F6.
8) In F6 you should be able to see the target field through the "Norden" cross hair site. Fine tune the line if off with stick inputs left or right and get lined.
9) Once "lined" up press "U" then press and HOLD "Y" for at LEAST 6 to 10 seconds. then press "U" again. In the top left all words should be green....strickly NO RED.
10) Press "Z" (you should still be in max zoom) use stick input left or right as required (you may need to repeat step 9 if calibrated to far out) and bombs away.
Now, having explained in a step by step fashion how to bomb with the latest calibration version, this will or go to hell if you A) loose speed or Alt, B) your net connection is shakey, C) your system is weak, D) Your FPS is way low....good luck matey.
Please note you NO LONGER have to find field ALT or swing cross hairs forward to calibrate. This was ammended some months pasts. I believe HTC made bombing easier in a vain attempt to stop the low alt skill-less gamey tards from carpet bombing. However, if that was the case the only "true" answere would be to make "F6" the default bomb drop position.

Thanks for the input:aok
Lizard, something you don't seem to understand, I can't set the crosshairs on a point. The clipboard covers them. It is like the clipboard is a sheet of paper and I'm holding it over the monitor so there is no way to see the crosshairs.
LYNX. I will try your way of doing it. That will solve all the problems about the clipboard. As for the rudder "DeadBand" I already did it and it helped alot. I had it set low because I like it that way for my fighters. So as I'm playing around with it and getting the settings I like, I'm writing them down so I can change them back for the different modes, i.e. fighter, bomber. (we Old Farts have to do things like that to remember them)
I do have to say something some people may not want to hear. I have been back for about a month and half now, after being gone about year. I left just as AHII was coming on-line. One of the reasons I left was because no one was willing to help someone else unless they were in thier little "click". This went for helping a newbie out or running missions, or just helping take a base. As a community we still have that problem, but it seems to have gotten better in some ways, but people still have thier little "clicks" they will help before someone they don't know. I can understand that in a way, but I have always been one who tried to help the whole in place of personal "glory". Like I've run a goon a dozen times and gotten killed just because someone needed a goon. Don't get me wrong, I'm no saint and by no means a good pilot of GV driver, but I will try and help if I can. Granted before I never used the BB, it was only in gameplay. It seems in here sides don't matter and THAT I like.:aok
So for those old timers who remember Rabbi or Catzman, I'm him.
Thanks for all the help, both in here and in the game.
-
Only time clicks matter in here is when a group ask HTC to implement something into the game and the diffrernet groups argue over it. Clicks are also big in the O'Club when it comes to political issues. But for the most part the community on here is helpful and respectful.
-
Gato you can't minimize the clipboard when you are in the bombsight view ?
-
I can, but as you know, when you minimize the clipboard, it goes away. I can change the size, but that dosen't make any difference as far as the crosshairs are concerned, it still covers them. Unless I am real close to the drop target, the bomb sight do me no good for calibrating as the target is not visible.
-
You don't need to see the target to calibrate your bombsight.
And I dont understand why you have the clipboard up as you are calibrating.

Gato firstly FORGET using the clipboard map. Why u use it to calibrate? Did someone tell to use clipboard ? if they did their advice was way wrong .......get this---> U do not need the clipboard. Put the bloody thing away and use my instructions as in above post
-
You dont put the crosshairs onto the target while calibrating. With the new calibration you care a rats arse where the cross is, just enter calibration mode, hold down the key for 10 secs and exit calibration mode.
You can change the size of the clipboard. Also i would put it away with esc for droping.
Dont open the bomb doors right away when leveling.
When you go level you want the bomber to pick up some speed so it gets up to the speed where it will stay with doors open. Once you reached that speed you open the doors, but opening em before it will take a longer time to reach the speed.

That is not the reason why it was changed. It was changed because people at the convention were able convince and show how difficult it was for certain people to hold their crosshairs steady to the point where you could get an accurate callibration. The reasons varried from people who just cant physically keep their hands that steady (and I see plenty of people in real life who do not have steady hands) or joysticks/equipment that just isn't good enough to keep the crosshairs perfectly steady.
I do hope though that HTC decides to make it that you can only drop bombs from the F6 view for heavy bombers.
