It looks like an early D... the grill on the lower side of the nose isn't covered up and the prop still has the 'cuffs' on it. Granted, the grill was mostly covered up to prevent engines from running too cold and may have been left uncovered for this restoration.

I'm hardly a P51 expert, but it looks like an early D.

P-51D-20-NA. That grill provides for filtered carb air in dusty conditions. IIRC, the pilot can close the normal intake duct when ground running should there be a lot of dust or sand. Many aircraft had the filter grill replaced by a sheet-stock aluminum.
