Hey, be safe down there with Katrina headed your way. My parents are gonna ride it out sixteen feet above sea level with 300mph-rated hurricane shutters. This one's gonna be a doozy.

Best wishes to your parents.. Hope they get by with minimum damage.

Uh, you might wanna try and re-convince them to change their mind. This thing is HUGE!!! They say the winds may get up to 200MPH.
300mph shutters don't help much when they're attached to your 150mph house...

Oh, I've tried convincing them otherwise. Sometimes smart people do really dumb things.

Dueled....um, got schooled.... by BigMax last pm -- said he was packing up overnight and was going to his parents' place 3 hours inland. Imagine he's clear of impact zone by now.
He may not post today, I have a feeling...

All the best to your folks Lev!

The problem with hurricanes at New Orleans is not the brunt of the storm, but the storm surge.
New Orleans is something like 20 feet under Sea Level. If it really hits hard, everyone is going to be floating.

Its 6 to 11 feet below sea level . The surge could be 25ft in the worst case scenario:(

Yeah, a friend of mine tried to convince his parents of the same thing. They live in NO and are going to be in the direct path if that thing hits where predicted. He spent over 2 hours on the phone with them.
Dang.
Absolutely amazing the mindset people can fall into.

My parents are fine albeit exhausted. As the hurricane moved north of New Orleans, their house began to flood. They wound up in the loft for a couple of hours while the water rose to three or four feet before receeding. This was in a house that sits sixteen feet above sea level but is practically surrounded on three sides by water; north and east by bayou and to the south by Pascagoula Bay.
I stayed in touch with them by cell phone during the entire event and got hourly updates. Needless to say, I don't think they'll be sticking around for the next hurricane.

I am fairly certain that he and his wife did leave to go to his parents and brothers house (Slash) up in Northern Mississippi from what Silmaril has said, and the fact that before it got bad I called Max's house and got the aswering machine.
Of course, all of MS got hit pretty hard, so we need to keep Max, Slash and families in our thoughts and hope it all went and continues to go well.
Thanks fellow AH family members,

I never check this board...
I really appreciate all of your concern and assure you that it will take much more than a lil ole hurricane to get Maxxy... I know when to extend (run like a scared rabbit)... which I did.
Thanks all for you kind wishes....
