I always thought that Big Stud was painted in black. At least thats from all the scale model pics Ive seen.
But looking at this pic it was just the nose that was black.

Anyone got the story behind that?

they have a couple of pictures of big stud if its the same one, maybe that will help

Yeah and as you see there is a black and a baremetal "Big Stud".
I know there was a stud (p40), big stud (jug) and a litttle stud (pony). But Im wondering if the black and the baremetal "Big Stud" jugs are the same plane with different paint jobs or two different jugs.

if u look closley the two bublbe top studs are different, one has the card facing the other direction,i think ther are two different ones but thats only from looking at the photos, good luck trying to find out sorry i couldnt help

Yeah the card and the text are different. Still this could be physicly the same plane but with different paint jobs. Where is Dan when you need him? ;)

I don't think that they were the same planes... the black big stud was a Razor back and the bare metal stud was a bubble top. I know that they conveted some razor backs to bubble tops during the production change... but I've never heard of that retrofit being done after a plane has been entered into service. But I'm by no means an athority, so take it for what it's worth.
Both look sweet anyway, so either way you wont lose! :aok

Silver Big Stud was the aircraft Robert Baseler used when he was stateside after his combat tour.
Apparently he had more then one if the one posted below is any indication
His wartime Jug was OD/Gray razorback.
