Over 800 dead and 300 wounded
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/08/31/iraq.main/index.html

ya i just read that. Very very sad
-
mostly wimmin and kids
-
Truly sad. It's depressing to think that some on this board may be quietly cheering this terribly tragedy.
I hope the person who yelled that there was a suicide bomber is identified.
-
Tragic for sure, but I don't get it.
What kind of people, fearing for their lives or not, trample to death women and children??
What kind of fear does it take to so override human decency that you could tramp all over a child's body, living or dead?
I note it wasnt fear of attack by coalition forces, it is fear of themselves and the terrorists amongst them.
You would think that reason would come to the fore here somewhere before a situation like this one was allowed to develop. You would think the people would jack up about having reason to fear those among them to such an extent that crowds of people turn into pannicked herds at the thought that one among them may be about to take the public bus to martyrdom.
How do they condone the activities of these suicide bombers when they cause this kind of suffering among their own?
I can understand a lack of compassion toward foreign armies on their soil, but a complete disregard for the welfare of their own children is incomprehensible to me.
-
Oh well.
-
weren't they headed to a religious festival?
Whats allah say about this?
-
Bluedog:
1. They don't condone the suicide bombers.
2. Mobs are dumb, and once you're in a stampede, you cannot select who gets trampled because people are pushing from behind who don't see what's happening.
3. They were afraid of themselves, they were afraid of the terrorists. Iraqi != terrorist, no matter what your indoctrination has suggested.
4. If the US had been attacked by terrorist suicide bombers as often as Iraq, then yelling that you saw one in a crowded stadium or church over here would have similar effects.
5. You appear to have little understanding of what a mob is constructed out of, and are exhibiting (in my opinion) a callous indifference that, while saddening, is not terribly surprising.

Not so long ago there was a sale in the US on used iBooks. :D
Nobody was killed, but people did trample eachother.... for iBooks
In iraq there was a bomb scare, and the same could happen here if people panicked.. you never know.

In Boston at Filene's Basement they have a yearly event that's been nicknamed "The Running of the Brides." This is where grown woman will trample strollers and senior citizens in an all out effort to get first dibs on marked down wedding dresses.
While waiting for the doors to fly open if someone were to holler out "A shoe sale!" or "suicide bomber!" I'm sure there would be a death toll.
-
OK, so it happens, and has happened elsewhere....doesnt make it any less sickening.
Edit: BTW Chairboy, I am not so indoctrinated as to believe that Iraqi=Terrorist, I fully realise that all of them arent.
My point is that enough of them are tollerated within and by the general Iraqi society to allow the people of Iraq to have reason to fear them in a situation such as this.
To me there is something fundamentally wrong there that no amount of outside influence will ever fix or change, it is something the Iraqi people must decide to do and must change themselves....namely by making it widely known that suicide bombers will recieve no glory, and in fact will actually inflict missery and suffering on their own families, ensuring their alienation from the community.
Perhaps if instead of "If I blow myself up, I will be a martyr" was changed to "If I blow myself up, my father will be stoned to death, my mother will have to beg for food and my young syblings will allmost certainly die" things might be differant.
That and wtf were they doing taking kids to a religeous gathering where this was not only possible but likely to happen.
If your religeon is strong enough to dictate mandatory attendance, you would think it would be strong enough to garuntee safety among one's peers.

Don't many christian families take their kids to Christmas Mass?

Maybe they do.. and if they were on a bridge or similar in huge numbers i would guess there could be a panick and stampede if someone yelled something similar. Maybe not pre 9/11 but now. (In Iraq were suicide buffs are common the threat is real.) They would prolly grab their own kids and do anyting to get to safety.

Never been to one and will never go unless my daugther decides to annoy her father by playing.
Anywho... Soccer fans are way to drunk to understand the word "bomb". :p

How many Christmas Masses have you attended where a suicide bomber was a real and likely threat?
If you planned to attend a Mass that you suspected was likely to have a nutjob in a C4 vest blow himself up, would you still take your kids?
If you were at a Mass, previously believed to be perfectly safe, and someone in front of you yelled "Suicide Bomber!!", would you pick your kid up and put yourself between him/her and danger, or would you tromp on them in an effort to get to the door?
If you were at the above, but had no kids , and saw someone elses kid on the ground in front of you, would you attempt to shield them, or trample them?

Hillsborough Stadium, 15th April, 1989. Not a riot, but a crowd control problem that was ineptly handled with fatal consequences for 96 people.

Ghana 1991, 120 soccer fans
Guatamala 1996, 80 fans
Lima Peru, 1964, 318 fans
Moscow 1982, 340 fans
Seems like when you get us (any of us) in a large group and panic goes thru the crowd, bad things happen to good folks.

Maybe the same thing as god about Katrina's results.

news flash : there is no God :
it's just an invention, like santa claus or the tooth fairy, created by men dwarfed by their insignificance in the vastness and blackness of the universe, just like a security blanket.
then the whole concept was perverted as leverage for power by smarter people.

I would never put myself in a position like that in the first place. If I lived in an enviroment where every large gathering was a potential target for a suicide attack, I'd never EVER take my family to attend one.
That's just plain stupid and the people who blindly follow their religion can only blame themselves. They knew the risks, accepted them and followed their beliefs even though it was strongly protested by common sense.
Anyone remember recent history in Saudi Arabia where a similar event took place? It seems that when people down there go to worship Allah, chances are they get to actually meet him quicker than they thought.

Every big city I have ever seen is just a mob/riot/stampede waiting to happen.. People get dumber in groups...
people are worse in big groups not better.
