One of my old roommates was an AW/AH junkie. After he'd gotten married and moved on, we'd talked one evening, and arranged to fly at the same time. We'd, coincidentally, gone out for drinks earlier, and returned to our respective homes and logged in. Sadly, he passed out at the desk during climbout, and his wife, upon returning home from dinner with one of her friends, sans housekeys, was fairly upset that he didn't hear the phone ringing [which was upstairs]. She slept at the neighbors, and he hasn't logged in since.

Moral of the story: I have no clue whatsoever. I just had to tell that.

I remember many stories of marriages wrecked by Air Warrior.  Not just AW itself, have to remember that AW hit its peak during the early to mid 90s when the internet was exploding.  More people than ever were finding the online world and finding online communities where they often fit in better than they did at home.  Marriages dissolved over online "romances" and the slightest thing was cause for suspicion.  When my ex found out there were women playing Air Warrior I never heard the end of it.  She was convinced the only reason I spent all that time in a flight sim was to talk to chicks.  hehe

That is so sad.  :(

Well I got started in AW after watching my husband (Zeb) many times and realising there was much more to it than "just another flight sim"...... he had had every flight sim going for years, but one day he told me he might be joining a squad and that's when I realised this one was different.  I watched him that night and was fascinated by the depth of detail as he entered the OC and went from there to HQ and on to a field.  Sure enough, he met up with Spiff who invited him to the Kraits.

After that I would ask him each night if he was going to go online until in the end he suggested I got my own account, even if it was just to go as a gunner or drive a vehicle.  So, that's what I did, and Flos was born (short for Florence, a female character of The Magic Roundabout (http://www.zeb.clara.net/magic.htm) where Zebedee was another character).

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.  :D

Uhm, yes, Mom ack is the deadliest of them all, specially when the mom ack tells the dad ack that the poor little soul shouldn't spend so much time at the computer.

Now... girl ack... well, no worries, they've been understanding. The current one loves airplanes aswell and actually went to a Flight Technician school during the high school years, as soon as I get to see her more often I will get her started in AH! :D

There is an interesting paradox in our household.  My wife, who is a very intelligent & normally rational person thinks AH is a mindless waste of my time.  However she is happy to settle down to The Archers, Desperate Wives, Lost etc as relaxing entertainment.  Am I missing something fundamental here?  As we are almost neighbours perhaps you could let me have a note explaining the attraction of AH with an emphasis on the feminine perspective ? :)

btw - Magic Roundabout aaaah, sweet memories. Time for bed:)

The wife and I have had some "issues" about playing AH in the past.

We agreed that unless there was an event or an organised squad get-together or something, that I should fly once the kids go to bed and not during the day.

I have had NO issues with any game since then.

In fact, when her "shows" (ala what whiskey said above) come on TV she actually encourages me to "play on my computer".

Trust me on this one, as I have been down the same road in conversation with my wife (at the time).  I always felt that my playing online games was entertainment equal to watching t.v.   I think what your wife is getting at it that shes not interested in sitting with you to watch you "play that dumb game" and she expects you to sit with her to have "your time together" watching t.v.... even if you hate the dumb shows she watches.  Point is..spending time together is what shes getting at that is lacking..women are funny that way. **sigh**
Hence now I am single (YAY!)

I might have you all beat....
Being in the US Air Force, I hadn't been home for roughly two and a half years.  Now, being from a military family I grew up around planes and such, so I introduce my father, a retired Command Master Chief (Navy) to AH a few years ago.  When I flew home earlier this year, he had some questions about the game.  We jump on the computer in his office and take off..... Before the gear raised on the Pony we had not one "Wife Ack".... we had TWO!!!   So... the Master Chief, Sketch & Scribble (my 2 year old son) were getting a butt chewing by the worst of it all, both Wife & Mother Ack!!  :rofl   My father has yet to start an active account!  :rofl

It is the other way around for me.

"You gona play that flight sim game right?" "Why are you not playing?" "You did what? Deleted your acount, why ?"

Hmm, should I worry? :(

Oh yeah, and we only have one TV set, so that is probobly why...

So what a great excuse to 'upgrade'!  You can win her over by offering her your current computer (hey it works for me!)  :D

I think we have grown to accept computers as our main form of entertainment now in our household.  The TV is still there but I rarely sit down and watch it - most of the time it is just on in the background, with me turning to look if I hear anything special mentioned or something exciting is happening in one of my 'soaps'!  :)

Otherwise, we spend a lot of time playing Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com) or, in my case at least, Aces High.  Him upstairs on his computer, me downstairs on mine - and sometimes our son (Cloudy) as well.  Problem is I don't spend enough time on the housework.....  :o  (Thank goodness Zeb likes cooking though!  :D )

My wifey was a long time AW Widow.... After losing her wife~ack ablilities, I had no problems during the AW to AH transitions.

However during the "DARK" days when I couldn't fly, BECAUSE MY PUTER NEEDED AN UPGRADE!!!!, she seen me going thru some serious withdraws...

Now when I come home from work, she pours me a glass of wine, a kiss and tells me to go fly and unwind.  Sometimes she'll even bring my Dinner upstairs so I can eat between missions.

:aok

My wife adjusted in different ways. Having a stressful job during my entire time of playing AW (and now AH), she knew if I came ome and sat right down at the puter, that it was not safe to talk to me.

It was only after I'd killed a number of Az and Cz that I could hold a rational, fair discussion with her :)

Also, taking her to a few AW conventions helped...she actuall had a good time!

I got lucky with the current one, she doesnt give a rat's arse about AH or any other flight sim, but she does play several other games online and doesnt mind my time spent here at all.  When she wants to watch TV, she's happy I'm on the computer, because we arent competing for TV time.

my wife also thinks I've turned nerd.  I don't have a wife ack problem because of all the passions I've involved myself in during our life together this is the only one where she can readily keep tabs on me and I don't come home injured.  it seems some of you gentlemen did not attend wife acclimatization 101 prior to taking your vows.  that explains why so many of you fly in hordes.

That's the nail on the head alright. You're right Ohio - it's a "time together" issue, despite any attempt at conversation during "time together" being met with icy glare or "quiet, I'm trying to watch TV" !!!

I miss the good days of old simple, “Wife-ack”, where rounds would be lobbed at me from her fixed gun position on the sofa….

She has now discovered the more lethal tactic of, “Wife-Spawn-Camping” Where places her self right in front of the keyboard.

I don't have much of a problem with wife ack but we have a spetial situation...
around 2 years ago I got online with my 2 weeks of AH and loved it Soooooo I told my wife that I would stop the smoking that she disliked if she would let me spend the $15 a month to fly... It's cheaper then the Cigs right?? :)

In 2 weeks I had compleatly stoped a 2 year smoking habit.
Now we have 2 comps and 2 accounts. :)
HTC for helping me kick the habit.

As a side note a friend came by a couple months after I quit and offered me a smoke, it did sound good so I accepted 1 and it tasted so bad that I could only get maybe 1/2 way through it and had to put it down. I now wonder how I got started.

Air Warrior is what got me through a nasty divorce. It kept my mind occupied when I likely would have been stewing on the situation. It was a GodSend! I got my brother hooked on AH right after his divorce  'course now he's married to a south american girl and I never see him - online or otherwise

ahhh yes the deadly wife ack. When I first signed on all she wanted to know was are their girls on? I would call out check 6 Lala on your 6 or watch it Niki coming up on your six and she would go balistic. Finally I convinced her that they were different aircraft not people. Now if I'm flying I have to be careful when Betty is in the area especially if it is a check six call

All I know is that back in '95 or '96, I was spending well over 2 hours a day playing AW...make that MacAW.   2 or 3 hours a day may not seem like much, but when you have a 8 to 5 job, a wife, 3 young kids, I was often neglecting them...and I finally hit me when Mrs. Fry finally blew up about it.

My response of "But I HAVE to go online as I have responsibilities I've committed to" (trainer, helper, etc.) didn't go over too well as her response was "What about your responsibilities here!".  That's when I realized that I needed to cut back some.  We worked out a "schedule" and it's been pretty smooth sailing since.  Of course, there are a few hiccups every now and then, but they always worked out.

I remember a Christmas/Hanukkah when I received a new set of CH Pedals from here...that's when I realized that she really DOES understand me and why I enjoyed playing AW.  And it really hit home when I was doing a scenario and it's just past dinner time.  I hear steps on the stairs coming down where I am in the basement and wondering if I'm going to have to stop to eat with the family.  Well, as I look to the door, I see her coming toward me and in her arms is a dinner plate of food and a Guinness:)

Of course, letting me go to Cons and even hosting a Con, now that's an AW wife:D   I hope she still remembers that as I embark on a new adventure here in AH (hoping to get online in the next day or two once I get my setup all configured correctly).

AH has sort of become a "lifestyle", as the terms are now applied outside of the game.  Cars that cut me off, are getting called "dweebs", etc.

My wife knows one thing, I can prove points like no other.  One time she told me to sleep on the couch.  I obliged, played the Playstation, after that was old, I flipped on the DirecTV.  To this day, she has never told me to do that.

Now, when I come home from work, I play with my soon to be 4 year old son (Sept.8th).  After he winds down, Daddy's fun begins.  On the weekends, the wife just rolls her eyes and calls me a dork upon the first "6".

She watches the Lifetime channel while I play.  As I tell her: "I find it intriguing that you can watch these made for tv movies that if I were to pull around and try (cheating, etc), you'd divorce my arse in a heartbeat".   She also knows where I am.

This game is great.
