WTF is going on down there.
-
Man I really feel bad for all those suffering...BUT. They were told to evacuate. I know not everyone could. But there are alot of able bodied people there, who screwed up by not leaving and now expect immediate rescue. Thats why they were told to leave. Because if the worst happened..the officials knew they would be overwhelmed. Well the worst pretty much happened.

Most people with cars did evacuate. All that remained were the diehards, old and the poor. No one in the city or state made any provisions to evacuate the elderly living alone, the sick, and the poor without transportation. Apparently, there was no real plan in place.
Frankly, I'm stunned at how unprepared the city was, considering how vulnerable New Orleans is.

4 days. FOUR DAYS. Jebus! Where is the help?
It's insane. I don't get it. What's going on?
-
It really seems to me that all of the hardware is being used to rescue and evacuate those still stuck in the flood or deathly ill. They are overwhelmed with the numbers that chose to ride out the storm. They are just now realizing that there are 10-20,000 at the convention center in desperate need of help.
Remember, the people at the convention center who talk about not getting any food or water for four days are NOT the people who rode out the storm in the SuperDome. The people at the convention center are ones who rode out the storm in the homes/apartments and have only been at the convention center since yesterday.
-
"chose"
Pfft.
-
Look at the footage of the air rescues pulling people off of roofs. Take note of how many of the homes have cars sitting in the drive.
-
There's no question that some chose to ride it out.
In a population of millions, the fact that some would make that choice should be a given. Factored in.
Not a talking point. NOT an excuse for a frankly, appaling response to this.
WHERE IS THE HELP?
Along with those that chose to ride it out, there are thousands that didn't have that choice.
Where is the help for them, at least?
I checked into what Canada offered up, and we were requesting that we be able to send in our SAR teams which helped with the typhoon, and guess what? They were denied.
I just do not get this!

Any idea why? I'm drawing a blank except the thought that it might be the danger from outlaws and thugs. We'd be pretty red-faced if your SAR teams got mugged while trying to rescue survivors. Hopefully I'm way off the mark.

They were denied from Homeland Security. I'm digging into that now - will post what I find.

Interesting.

Nash, the government is in the midst of the biggest cluster**** I've ever been saddened to witness.
The fact that the results are pretty much what any sane man with prior knowledge of government cluster****s could expect does not in the slightest excuse the many thousands of people that COULD have gotten themselves (and still could) to saftey and as a result are overtaxing the system.
Instead, we get to watch drama queen welfare types and moronic media potatos ("..there's a BODY just LYING there, and nobody is doing anything about it!!) further sour the situation.
Meanwhile, the folks from Texas, upstate Mississippi, Alabama, Florida.. from all over, have hooked up their john boats and loaded water, food, gear and convoyed down there to help.. to be held up at the city limits by cops saying 'danger.. warning.."
It sucks!

Okay what about air drops? Can't they do that at least?
Most I've heard is the odd truck driving by, tossing out MREs.
Where is the Guard? Where is everybody?!
This aint Leavenworth Kansas, this is NEW ORLEANS for chrissakes! (apologies for the exclamation marks, but I'm an excitable guy, and this is one whale of a tragedy).
There's going to be hell to pay. Oh yeah. I don't know by who or from where, but this is just incredible. I'm astonished.
Can't they do air drops or something?

Well, I'm deeply disappointed in the inability of the state(s) and federal government to get their backside's into motion. For crying out loud, the military can move an airborne division across the globe in 36 hours, yet the bureaucrats can't get bottled water moved 50 miles in four days!!!
There's nothing as useless on the planet as a professional bureaucrat.

IE6 flash 7 and WMP 10?
No, that is video that is not worth watching.
-
Wtf how is this possible? Why aren't they supplying at least water to people?
I can't believe what I saw.

The help is in our checkbooks, and physical beings, if you spare...

I am really surprised at how slowly everything is moving. I recall Andrew and the Army was there setting up tent cities on the 2nd day. Andrew rolled in and out on Aug 24-25 and the troops were there on the 27th. And it seemed response from other agencies was faster too. I recall that even Kennedy Space Center sent a convoy of water tankers and supplies that arrived on the 27th too.

THe primary reason is water. Andrew's water from rain receded within the ground quite quickly. The levi in NO busted on the 2nd day after the hurricane and filled the "bowl" up making it very difficult to get in to set up anything on dry ground. As for Mississippi, the flood water combined with the devastation is incredible and from what I am seeing, much more extensive. One of the worst logistical nightmares is flooding from a rescue/recovery point of view.

I do have to say what I say on the news today from a guy in MS. He said that because the storm hit so close to the 1st of the month, the poorest had no money for gas. There was a town of 6,000 where only a few survived who rode it out and this is what they told him.

I saw an interview where a an ex-military analyst was asked that very question. His answer was, "because this is a federal FEMA operation, and not a military operation."
-
Bush appointed his buddy, a real estate lawyer, as the head of FEMA, then systematically gutted it. Its budget was slashed. They were told to stop training for natural disasters. They were being directed to move towards Homeland Security.
So if it's a FEMA operation, whaddya expect?
-
My real only comment is that if im correct, isnt New Orleans and some of the southern coast stretching from Louisiana to Florida 20 feet or more under water. If your going to live in that area you should expect floods quite often. Not trying to be mean or anything but the people there have to be pretty stupid to be living on the coast that is under sea level that much and not going to expect floods.
-
The population in New Orleans is 70% minorities. Need I say more?

"
There may be more to that than just that short statement. When a person relies on "they" to "give" them everything from housing to medical care to that monthly check those people give away their responsibility for their own survival. Watch any plea on the media from those that did not evacuate when told too and you will hear the words "they" haven't "given" us anything, "they" ain't helping, "give" us something, "give" us water. Where did their responsibility go for their own safety and actions? Give long enough and those receiving become either unwilling or unable to help themselves."
this was posted on another board, seems reasonably accurate.
as for getting aid money down there? what money? were spending it all on gas...
-
Until THEY, get help - WE will get our nuts squeezed that much more by higher fuel costs.

of course, a good publicity stunt would be some oil or gas company promising x% of every gallon sold to go directly to help NO, though the bastards would probably just bump up prices by that same percentage to compensate

I would buy that argument except for one thing...the water is higher now than it was 3 days ago and somehow they are able to get convoys of buses in there now to haul people out. So that must mean that there was a passable route 3days ago through which supplies could have been brought in. That argument...eh hem...doesn't hold water.
