Title: The Wall
Post by: Lizard3 on September 05, 2005, 10:42:40 PM
I just finished watching "The Wall" again for the first time in years, maybe decades.

I sat down to start watching and had a half a beer sitting next to me. When it was over, the beer was still sitting there, all warm and crap. (it was guiness draft, so its not so bad warm) I guzzled the rest of it.

There is no overt drug use, only somewhat implied. Not alot of drinking. A few boobies fly about unfettered(I had forgotten about that).

What is it about this movie(musical?) that makes me feel like I need to rush off to detox when I'm done watching? It was a freakin TRIP the first time I saw it (84) and is still a freakin TRIP 20 years later. When I first saw it I didn't half understand what the hell was going on, now with 20 years of life behind me I do get it...mostly...

So why do I feel....?

Isn't there an urban legend that you can watch the wizard of oz to the soundtrack of the wall or something along that line?

My daughter said they watched the Wizard of Oz and listened to Dark Side of the Moon in class a couple of days and it seemed to match up pretty well. She thought it was kind of funny and neat.

...like Syd Barrett?  That's the intent.

That weird feeling, is the old man in you mourning the days of youth. I have music I put on, and I can sit there, with a beer, and close my eyes....and feel like its 1980, when I used to go into my sisters room and steal her wine, and listen to her stereo.

I had this movie saved on my PC for a while up until a couple days ago when i was cleaning up.

It is one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. I really didnt see much of a point behind it. I am probably missing it though.

It's a story about a man's mental break down.  Pink, the singer in the movie, is based on Syd Barrett and the mental break down Pink suffers is also based on Syd Barrett's mental break down.  So basically, it's about Syd Barrett's decline into madness.

Certainly not Zeppelin or Floyd, but these guys are the closest I've seen in a while.

Edit: Some language in the music.  Not adviseable for playing loud or at work.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I listened to the album the other day to find the Song, that is playing during the Anzio Beach landings in the movie.

Lyrics say something to the effect of "tigers roamed free, But the Anzio Beach must remain free!" <
What song is this on the album?

It's about Roger water's alienation of the crowd, which reached the boiling point in 1977 at Montreal (the spitting incident).  Actually only two songs off of the album is are about Syd, Nobody Home & Comfortably Numb.  The album is about Roger Water's growing up without his father and the rigors and outright boredom of touring in stadiums.

'When the Tigers Broke Free...'

Its not on the album as Wolf14 says...

Quote
It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

They've been replaced by Britney, American Idol, and top-40 bullchit.

Regarding the Wizard of Oz and DSOTM...they only match up if you are properly enhanced/impaired (depending on your point of view). I have an AVI with the two superimposed and the relationship is tenuous at best.

AKAK, I am quite impressed that you know who Syd is at your young age, he was the inspiration for the entire "Wish You Were Here" album.

If not for Roger Waters, nobody would even know who Pink Floyd was.

Pink Floyd was ALREADY WELL KNOWN with Syd Barrett at the helm.  A book is due out about the making of the Dark Side of The Moon.  I have read he Advanced Reading Copy, reading this book will show you how false your statement is.

What Shall we Do Now? and When The Tigers Broke Free were both left off of The Wall at the time, due to "Sound Quality".

I saw Floyed back in the 90's.  Best concert I've ever seen.  Have always been a fan and am amazed by how many people do not understand what the words are about.

Sad to say but that was NOT Pink Floyd, what you saw was one of David Gilmour's solo tours. I enjoyed his first one and bought his first two solo albums, but since he screwed Roger via the courts I have never dropped a dime his way, the back-stabbing bastid!

Unfortunately the radio station near me is "Classic Rock". They play al the stuff I loved when I was young. Over and over and over. Im kinda burned out on hearing Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Rolling STones (never liked em much), Zepplin, AC/DC, and related bands.  Its like they have 1 album of side a songs and play it back to back.

I would definately have to disagree with you on this single point.  If from 85-95 was "The Solo David Gilmour" tours, how is it that Roger Waters needs at times 3 guitarists, to capture the sound of Gilmour, and Snowy White is the best of the three.

I used to agree with you, however, Gilmour sang the majority of the songs, had a superior voice, and is probably the best guitarist to lay their hands on a Strat (sorry SRV fans, just my preference).

Roger screwed himself, noone else did.  But now at 60, he realizes that he screwed up.  You could see it in his eyes, at Live 8, in between Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb.

My 1st ever Concert was Pink Floyd in 1988, and I saw both Division Bells shows at the Pontiac Silverdome in 94.  I'll tell you all this much, the Silverdome, was NOTORIOUS for echo.  Elvis cursed the place and ssaid he'd never play it again.  Pink Floyd came in there and it is still the Loudest and Clearest concert my ears will ever hear.

Well, I'll be the first to say that RW could have had ten guitarists and not been able to capture the DG sound. DG is definitely the cleanest guitarist evah, SRV has him licked on speed though

Basically the "screwing" was simply the violation of what both have said was a gentlemans agreement to not use the name. Do you agree that Nick Mason and Richard Wright add nothing? During the latter tours when DG stopped soloing and took the name PF back (to boost the lagging sales figures) they had multiple drummers and keyboardists (some say NM and RW were unplugged) too. They were dragged along to satisfy the court ruling only.

Rumor has it that Roger and David have made up and are considering a US tour again. Hopefully it will not be a LA/NYC only tour like it was in 1980.

Showing my age, I saw Pink Floyd in '76 or 77 at Soldier Field in Chicago,  believe it was the Animals tour. Had two story pigs floating across the stadium on wires.  My first concert.

IMO it was more of a synergy.  Gilmour sucked bellybutton without Waters and vice versa.
