Here's another A-6 vid... not as nasty as that one. He loses his cranial to the engine.

Yep this is very old. I remember seeing this video in 1981 as a private in the airforce. (pretty sure thats the one anyway).
He did live IIRC. Broke his collarbone though I think (and probably requisitioned a new pair of shorts as well).
cheers,

Had a guy in my squadron that never ever went out on the flight line, turns out that shortly before I got there he was out during a maintenance engine start and got sucked into the intake of an F-14. His tool belt got caught on the de-icing probe and he was stuck with his feet flopping around inches from the fan blades. What was bad was nobody noticed him missing and he was in there for over 5 minutes screaming bloody murder till they shut the engine down.
Boy jes wadnt rite aftur that.

I can;t imagine why:(

its a good thing he got sucked into an american jet engine, cuz the blades on american jet engines are fragile. them ruskie ones can chew a fella up somethin fierce.

Having seen an MI-24 missing 8 fan blades and a few stators and still running, I can attest to this fact.
-
Planes with adjustable stators save lives ..(only if theyre before first stage of turbine..) Like in F-18, when you get sucked in you just have helluva time keeping yourself sane while they try to find you.
-
Not true jarsci.
I have almost 11 years of experience with the F18.
We lost a refuelling tender driver back in the mid 80's when I was in the airforce. CF18 picked him up, sucked him in and emptied him.
Happened very quickly, and the guy probably didn't feel much.
These engines draw a phenominal amount of air. Doesn't pay to get close enough to block part of the flow into the intake.

Idle power?
While I was working with them I always thought them lifesavers if sucked in... Well lucky me not knowing truth! :)
Mig-21 wanted always suck my hat and earprotectors.
BTW it was much nicer to check out turbine in F-18 than in mig. Mig had really cramped insides compared to F-18 luxury tube. But when sliding out of F-18 intake better watch your jewels...(that little metal piece, what was it , ice detector?)
-
That "jewel remover" (LOL pretty accurate description) is called a vortex generator. Basically splits the flow of air a bit so the boundary layer doesn't build to the point of choking the engine (IIRC).
And yep the tender driver was sucked in while engine was at idle. Basically what happened was he walked right in front of the intake while wearing a bulky winter Parka. He cut off most of the airflow, his parka billowed up and the engine picked him up and sucked him in.
Pretty much all that was left was a bag of bones and dried out meat. Most of the body moisture was hoovered out of him.
Pretty gruesome way to go.
Still my alltime favorite Jet, and I sure do miss being around them.
Cheers,
RTR
