Title: hey lazs & other gun collectors
Post by: indy007 on September 08, 2005, 08:12:40 AM
(http://www.chuckhawks.com/taurus_100B-11.jpg)

A guy at work offered it to me for $325 with 2 mags. He says it's in excellent condition, and judging by how he keeps his stuff (truck, bike, etc) he's not lying. Looks like a typical Beretta 9mm, but I've never owned one of those either. Gonna take it to the range this weekend to check it out. Is it a good deal for the price?

that is about the right price.. maybe a little low but..  I have no interest in those guns.

Here in Kalifornia the ten round mag ban is still in effect so... If you gotta have a self shucker with 10 or less... why not just go to 40 or 45?

Beretta's and taurus's of that design are prone to stovepiping.

Right on, thx guys. Luckily I'm in Texas not Kali :) Hell, Jim Pruett's is 10 minutes from my house. I could walkout with a supressed, fully-auto Sten for under 4k, or an Uzi 6k.

Not gonna carry this concealed or anything. Katrina looters finally convinced my sheep-like friends why firearms are a good thing and they're asking me to take them shooting. This Taurus was offered to me this morning so I figured this would be as good a pistol as any for them to abuse. I can't wait to hand it to them unloaded to see if they blink pulling the trigger.

the only really good thing about 9mm is that you can get ammo dirt cheap and they have virtually no recoil.

If you are training people to shoot... these are good things.

Oh.. I have come to the realization that I live in the wrong state..

couple more years...

couple hours ago my boss turned purple over something I said (not all that uncommon of an durring "conversations" with him)..

It was about seatbelts... I told him that if it were the policy for me to wear em in our vehicles I would do so but that in my Hot Rods I wore a lap belt most of the time and in my Lincoln I never did...  He acted like I was suggesting overthrowing the government or craping on finesteins lawn or something.

silly little man.

You should never crape on lawn.  You lose all definition.

Lazs, lazs, lazs....  have you ever taken this mini-test?  http://www.self-gov.org/quiz.html

according to that... I am a tiny bit, maybe one maybe question away from being at the very peak of libertarian.

questions are wierd tho... no subsidies is fine so long as you don't have punitive taxes for instance.   Drugs for adults is fine so long as they pay their own way and lose jobs or privliges for being dangerous to everyone else (dui etc).

Not all that cut and dry.

Agreed, nothing is cut & dry, but it's certainly an interesting conversation starter.  Thanks for checking it out, thought you might find it interesting.

My problem with libertarians is that for the most part... they are egghead wussies.

Only half of em own guns... only half of that number have fired em...

They have no idea of what to do with the power they have and they are a failure as a political party... pretty much a joke... they keep trying to win big elections for which there is no hope... they should get realistic and start trying to win local elections...

A good book on what they should do is Molon Labe by Boston T Party (don't even know his real name).

I'm not picking on you Lazs.  I support you all the way on the gun issue.

Governments don't make men equal, guns do.

P.S.  If you feel that the Libertarians are not running for the right offices feel free to go to it's websit and E-mail HQ.  Let them know what you think should be done.  See my Sig for link.

my ruger 9mm fires like crap..when you fire an HK tactical 45 auto next to it..it shoots even smoother the the 9 mil..with a much more powerful load..pretty amazing the amount of quality difference you can have from gun to gun..

I've owned alot of guns in the past but I always find myself going back to my S&W model 60-9 for everyday carry.  I much prefer wheelguns.

xargos...  I belive that libertarians live in a fantasy land... they will never get the majority vote unless they do like the mormons....  move in to one sparsly populated state.

A really good book for you to read if you haven't allready is Molon labe by Boston T Party.   (not kidding)..

It outlines the only recourse for libertarians that I can see.   My take is tho that most libertarians are eggheads that will not really fight for what they believe in... they make better martyrs than anything.

As for guns... I like revolvers in 44 mag.. after years of shooting I allways go back to em... they are about the limit of acceptable size and recoil... powerful and accurate.   I have redhawks and blackhawks and Dan Wesson 44's   I have lately gotten fond of a Kimber 1911 custom eclipse in .45  very accurate and reliable but not powerful enough for a lot of things.

Managed to run some mags through the Taurus. Only gripe is the mag release is on the bottom, left hand corner of the grip. Other than that it was pretty nice, tight grouping, very little recoil, not even loud. Could not get it to stovepipe even with rapid firing.

Was quite the adventure. Picked up my friend that wanted to go shoot his Ruger .45 compact. Managed to show up at the range 5 minutes after it closed. I wasn't a happy camper, but my friend "knew a spot" where we could go renegade shooting. I'm down for whatever, hit the gas station for a 12-pack of coca-cola targets, and the next thing you know, we're off-roading in my freshly detailed, 2-wheel drive SUV. I geuss I should mention the only "off-roading" I've ever done is a 50 foot long dirt road.

We get back up in there and line up the coke cans. Then I realised mosquito repellent woulda been a good idea.. I was wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and adidas casual shoes with no socks. So if y'all don't hear from me in a few days, I'm dead from West Nile. I rummage around my truck for my ear plugs.. nope, no there. Probably thrown out by the detailing crew. It's okay, just a 9mm, not that loud anyways...

Shoot off 1 clip, ears ringing a bit, not a big deal. Those coke cans paid dearly for their transgressions. Only had 1 mag with me, so I wandered back to the truck to reload while my friend shot off his 2 mags. Wow, that seemed kinda loud... even with a truck between him & I. Then he offered it to me. Not being one to turn it down, I load up a mag and head over to our impromptu firing line. I should mention that I'm just recovering from a cold, and always get ear infections so they've both been plugged up for days... I load up the mag, drop the slide, aim at the evil-commie-coke-can, and pull the trigger. This is where I learned a valuable lesson. The pain of both ear drums popping nearly dropped me to my knees. I blinked away the pain, quietly returned his gun.. he was talking but I don't read lips...

So we started to pack up and leave.. then we got stuck. 5 minutes and some lowered tire pressure later, we were back on our way. We pulled back onto the paved road, and the second we hit the speed limit, the police came around the corner. For once luck was with me and he drove past, heading offroad to where we were at. At least some things work out.

Fun evening though.. I'd do it again (with earplugs).

Actually let them shoot it awhile to see if they have the discipline to not anticipate the shot. If their shots start going low, they are flinching (anticipating the recoil). On the next reload, hand it to them them chamber empty but mag full (same weight so they don't suspect something). Tell them it's ready to shoot (hammer cocked if not DA only). Watch how rediculously downward they point the barrel as they try to squeeze/pull the trigger.
Then point out two things they did wrong.
1) Anticipating the recoil by flinching.
2) Not verifying the weapon's "loaded" condition.

Start them early on the good habits as bad habits are usually tough to break/change, esp under stress.

One day years ago I fired a single round out my my .357. It was a full power, but only a factory (not my extra-hot handloads) load, fired at arms length from a 6-inch barrel. My ears ached instantly, and they rang for over a week later, I kept checking for blood.

Lesson learned, and as Lazs said, I use muffs with the .22 rifles nowadays.

I carry earplugs (the cheapo throwaway ones) in every car I own...  I have a couple of sets of electronic muffs that allow me to hear normally but shut out loud noise...  I have them in my shooting bag and gun safe.

Lately... I have been trying some electronic earplugs... they fit in the ear canal like a hearing aid and are adjustable for sound level... they are for hunters I guess and will amplify sound but... they do a great job of muffling harmful levels.

It is a good thing to be able to hear somewhat normally (albeit a little tinny) and still protect your ears...

electronic muffs and plugs run from $39-$300 less than what most of us spend on ammo in a week.

It never fails until a primes backs out of the case, or a bullet isn't crimped tight enough and moves forward tying up the cylinder.....

If you're looking for a handgun for your friends to "abuse", then "lose that nickle plated sissy pistol and get yourself a Glock!"
(Apologies to Tommy Lee Jones)

Seriously though, the Glock 19 is a lot lighter than the Beretta/Taurus, holds the same number of roundsm and is also a lot smaller.  What's not to like about that?  Smaller, lighter, easier to operate, holds the same number of rounds - I know which one I'd choose, and this is from someone who owns both the Glock and the Taurus...
