Anyone watching this series? Hard to beleive there aren't, but I just did a search on "over there" and got zero hits.
Anyhow, just curious about opinions of the show, on any level (artistic, political, or soap operatic). I caught up with it off the Tivo and just watched the reporter espisode #2.
-
I caught the end of an episode last night. Showed a suicide bomber walking up to a fence and one of the soldiers was translating what he was saying. When the soldier translated that he was goin to blow himself up, everyone ran for cover. The ending montage was of all the bodies strewn everywhere, and the injuries people had sustained of course with opera music in the background.
I imagine this show could be hard to watch if you just got home from Iraq.
-
I've been following it. While the first epp/pilot sucked big time the rest have been rather enjoyable and very well balanced.
-
I caught the first episode.
For the first half of it I was thinking ......Rut Roh, this is going to be used as a platform, then it completely changed directions from where it seemed to be heading.
A little early to tell one way or the other I`d say.

It started interesting and has become lame.
I kinda havta watch that sh** tho... my buddy Lombardo plays a husband left behind, he's the dude going to the support meetings with all the hot wives. This is a big acting break for him, hes one of those actors thats just waiting tables in the meantime.
You'll actually see me in one of the episodes thats already past, Im in the background of a rehab scene trying on a prosthetic leg.. just happened to be there with a SAG card.
I hung around on the soundstage (long time ago) and didn't see any of the main characters, almost all of the outdoor "Iraq" footage is 29 Stupms using all rented USMC gear.
The show loses a lot of credibility for realisim, this small unit of low rank scrubs get all these special forces like missions... uh huh, I esp like how there's rarely an officer around and this puke SSGT makes most of the vital decisions.
The characters are kinda stupid too, your average Army rifle carrying sod isn't some college educated cracker who shoots the fece by opining on Greek Mythology in the back of a 5 ton.
A few of my pet peeves:
WM's or Army chicks do not ever ever look like Ms.B, ever... but they are potatos like she is, so thats cool.
All the Army nurses were hot too, totally un real.
Theyre always wearing chin straps firmly and tightly attached, sleeves down, extra gear... nobody walks around like that.
"Smoke" the SAW gunner doesnt carry a spare barrel bag, and its obvious Rambo trained him on how fire that weapon.. I lugged a SAW for years and carried at least 1, if not 2 spare barrels in an asbestos sachel... the SAW barrel gets glowing red hot and can be swapped in seconds.
I also hauled around an extra 300 round drum and a few 30 round clips which the SAW is designed to fire... missing from our brave Over There actors.
The show is also politically slanted, they take extra care to show how terrified innocent and cute looking kids Women, elderly are when big bad US Army grunts kick doors, toss houses, recklessly point weapons...
Or how US Army lies.. an Intel Officer promised not to hurt some "innocent farmers" that just happened to be hiding stolen stingers... he promises up and down nobody will be harmed, all they want are the missiles back, swear!!!
The show ends with a cruise missile desimating the innocent farmer family, a few goats and 1 bad guy with an AK guarding the stingers... complete with "I wanna cut my wrist" music to celebrate the horror and injustice.

I caught an episode the other night. If you're watching it to see what it's like over there, don't.
-
Thanks for the opinions guys, I have to agree with most of what has been said, particularly you xMarine
, and tell your bud I think he's one of the better actors...less is more!
I don't watch it for anything factual, but I am finding it to be thought provoking and the dialog is pretty good IMO. I find myself feeling stong emotions while watching it and I appreciate being manipulated by my entertainment, SB has always been good at that. I find myself feeling more anger towards the mother of the little boy than I do at the terrorists and I don't think I've seen the stereotype of "Angel" reproduced much in war movies of the past.
Tell the folks at FX I'm sorry for confusing them with TNT too :D

I just dont like the show.

I don't need his head getting any fatter, but I'll tell him you said that. I keep telling him only the magic of Hollywood enables him to talk to girls that hot... lol

That puke SSgt does exactly what every SSgt I've ever worked with does. He was cheesy in the pilot but has gotten better. I agree with you on the missions though. I've seen officers in every episode. They act exactly like most officers act.
The characters are kinda stupid too, your average Army rifle carrying sod isn't some college educated cracker who shoots the fece by opining on Greek Mythology in the back of a 5 ton.
I have 10 years TIS and they snagged almost EVERY stereotype of people I've worked with over the years. I was a supervisor for a 33y/o Lcpl who had a masters degree when I was a 21 yo Cpl.
A few of my pet peeves:
WM's or Army chicks do not ever ever look like Ms.B, ever... but they are potatos like she is, so thats cool.
potatos yes, cute.....I've seen um but they are few and far between
All the Army nurses were hot too, totally un real.
true
Theyre always wearing chin straps firmly and tightly attached, sleeves down, extra gear... nobody walks around like that.
have you ever been to an AOR were this is SOP....I have 3 times and it sucks. COs set this policy and chew bellybutton when they find shin straps un straped or sleeves up.
"Smoke" the SAW gunner doesnt carry a spare barrel bag, and its obvious Rambo trained him on how fire that weapon.. I lugged a SAW for years and carried at least 1, if not 2 spare barrels in an asbestos sachel... the SAW barrel gets glowing red hot and can be swapped in seconds.

total agreement

the show is brutally honest, maybe you just havn't seen to many other parts of the military than your own experience. It wasn't a cruise missle it was a smart bomb. They guy didn't lie he said I promis that on "every thing I beleive in" He also said "I AM a heathon" That's how "spook types" operate to the T.
In addition, it's a TV show...nuff said.

Wait until the upcoming sex scene with the other "wife" who is completely smitten, BTW, she's about the hottest of all the wives.

I pretty much agree with Gun's assessment of the show. It's a "Combat" (old WWII show) style dramatazation of Iraq. They took about every stereotype you might run across and made them a squad. Gives a decent overall picture of the situation without being 100% technically accurate.
Remember, it's a TV show. If they just followed a ramdom squad around, it would be full of pretty uninteresting charaters.
I also think Erik Palladino is great as Sgt. Scream. I'd like to see more of him and his backstory.

don't think it protrays female military in a fair light..gi jane going awol, leavin her kids with grandma,$3000 cash (what money does she use to start over in CA?) while running away to LA
the show need less soap and more action

I agree less soap more action but it does portray female military members in a farely accurate light.
2 woman, one's a potato, one isn't. 50% sounds about right to me. ;)

I haven't watched a single episode. Theres enough war going on in the real world....
-
Overall, its a mixed bag. But a new show has a learning curve of cheesy to chilling. Frankly I thought the good Colonel in Intel was the best of them i've seen - right up there with a Band o Bros's episode.
-
I have only seen the commercials for it and they suck so I imagine the show isn't much better...

I aint gonna call it art or even GREAT cinema, but considering the dearth of anything decent on the 500 channels of television I'd put it in the worth watching category.

Marine there's an old saying, ideology increases propotionally to the distance from the problem.
Besides the truth is boring and so untantilizing. How do you expect the movie makers to turn a profit off of this whole war deal?
We got to have our "Platoon"s and "Three Kings" and "Blackhawk Down" and Micheal Moore to teach civilian america what the military is really all about.

Hey, but before Three Kings I never knew bouillon were those little cubes you put into water to make soup.
