Title: Amphibious Assault Group.
Post by: Clifra Jones on September 12, 2005, 12:41:58 PM
To me it makes no sense to have to park a CV group half a mile or less off shore to launch your LVTs. How about an amphibious assault group consisting of a destroyer, 2 D.E.s and an LCU (Landing Craft Utility) not sure what they were in WWII, to lazy to look it up.

This group would follow the main CV group when not under control. A player can take control of this group just like a task group and sail it towards the shore, keeping the main CV group out to sea.

This is how it was done. CVs were never brought close in to land. They are a stand-off weapon. This would greatly increase the survivability of CV's as they could be sent far off from the target base once the assault has been launched.

All it would do is allow bombers to get some altitude before hitting the CV, and give the fighters a larger window to distract the AA gunners in. Personally, I think CV attacks will continue as normal, only you add 4 more ships, 3 armed, or replace your destroyers with the lighter armed D.E.'s and unarmed LCU.

You're pretty much shooting yourself in the foot as far as base taking goes. CV's have a hard enough time as it is.
