Title: Quick power supply question and ...
Post by: ramzey on September 12, 2005, 06:22:25 PM
is 350W enough for  754 athlon 64/sempron 64 with 1 GB ram and AIW 9600 128Mb?
if not whats is good enough?

also, if you have to choose sempron 64 3000 (1.8 GHz) on ABIT (nForce 3) motherboard or  ECS motherboard (chipset sis 755) with Athlon 64 3200 + ( 2.2 Ghz 130 nm SQI)
what it would be?

I'd avoid both the ECS mobo and the sempron.  I'd also avoid the socket 754 motherboards.

As long as you're buying everything new, try to find a way to get a socket 939 nforce 4 based system within your budget.  If you buy at the low-end of that level of system, you can upgrade cpu, memory, and vid card in a couple of years and possibly save an entire upgrade cycle.

See if you can get a barebones socket 939 system.  I've seen them as low as $500-$600 for a case, mobo, cpu, hard drive, and sometimes even a basic video card.  Try tigerdirect and price out their barebones systems.  If you get the right components, you should end up with something that is inexpensive but upgradable.

IMHO.

Ramzey, I'd choose the Abit motherboard over the SiS motherboard every time.

And while a high quality 350W power supply MIGHT be enough, I'd say you want at minimum these days to have a 400W power supply.  If you get a 9800 or higher video card that requires you to plug into the power supply, you'll want even more juice.
