I'm gonna pick one up this weekend. I had the 2nd gen 20 gig but missplaced it somewhere. Ya don't need that much space anyways...

Yeah, I can't wait.

Yep, I instantly knew I was getting one as soon as I saw it.

I only wish I could be able to buy the gun version of the ipod nano too:

I almost purchased it last week of the web site, but I'd like to wait a bit and see what comes around early next year when I upgrade my mobile phone.

This (http://www.apple.com/itunes/mobile/) is the latest/greatest in MP3 phones. I think.

Post by: SOB on September 13, 2005, 12:35:00 AM
Well that sucks.  It uses Transflash memory.  Maybe the Nano is in my future.  It was probably too much to hope that they could integrate an MP3 player into a phone and have it not totally suck.  Maybe my problem is that I'm looking for a cool MP3 player with a basic mobile GSM phone built in, and not the other way around.

Well... don't take my word for it. That seemed the best that I know of. There may be better. And there may be better by the time you need to replace your old phone.

But... Ultimately it's gotta go there. An MP3 player in one pocket and a cell phone in another? Nah. Too much to schlep. One day there's gonna be a single device that does all these things well, including porn.
Title: ipod nano
Post by: SOB on September 13, 2005, 01:03:17 AM
Damnit, Nash, now I'm never gonna be able to get what I want.  I hadn't even thought of porn integrated into the device (though I do have my own WAP page with dirty pictures on it), but that is inspired.  My ring tone could be that unmistakable sound of... well, maybe I should stop there, lest the MPs smell blood in the water.  (woof, woof!) :D

I am weak though, so I may just end up with a 4GB Nano soon.  "How Do You Afford Your... Rock & Roll Lifestyle?".  It just fits.  :)

The ROKR is a joke (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,6903,1567110,00.html) of a deadend: 100-song limit, regardless of memory. the clickwheel thingy (aka the ipod interface) is gone; Cellphone battery life; no, you have to buy your ringtones separately -- you can't use any music you download for that;
So buy your nano or a decent mp3 player, and keep your phone separate.

Or, if you must, buy someone else's phone mp3 player. they've been around for a while and aren't intentionally crippled like the ROKR.

Yup... never been so disapointed with the release of an "apple" product in years. I was waiting for this cause im in the market for a new phone, but the rokr is just plain retarded. Gonna get myself one of the announced Nokia phones instead.

I had the Samsung P735 for a while, but that had its own issues.  Not worth the price I paid, even being a T-Mobile employee at the time.  Fortunately, I was able to sell it on ePay for slightly more than I paid for it. :)

Get with the program.

Nokia 6680 with OggPlayer (Yes it plays also mp3s). Two cameras; 1,3mb in backside under a sliding hood and VGA in upper right corner for video calls.
Now 256mb card inside but 512mb is already OTW.
Uses Symbian Series 60 OS; I'm usually running only ICQ in it but when needed also GPS proggie with Scandinavian map (TomTom 5) or OggPlayer.
GSM + GPRS + UMTS (aka 3G = Third Generation); max data transfer 384kbs and You can use it as modem via cable or Bluetooth.
Did I mention it has Opera browser? Oh and shortcuts in desktop for 5 selectable proggies?
Oh and it has RealPlayer too.
Runs also Excel, Powerpoint and Word files + PDFs (IIRC).
Frigging things is so wonderful that I'd marry it once if it would be possible...
I'm waiting if someone builds Symbian compatible p2p proggie... :D

btw don't know if it's already known but some phone manufacturer is already integrating a hard-disk into a cellphone.

Oh and rumour also says one large American company is going to sell out its mobilephone division.

N91? 4GB of space, 2 Mpix camera. But the sound quality should be good. crappy link (http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?loc=inside,main_n91), which goes to a flash prompting a country selection.

I would like to point out I've been using this for around 18 months now, plus have Word/Excel/Access compatibility (editable), as well as web browsing, games, video playback (yes porn on your phone), automatic exchange rate conversion, automatic weather updates, tide information (for fishing), voice recognition and the list goes on.

Why? The Nano i just a 4Gb flash based Mp3 player with no room for expansion. I usually take my cellphone wherever I go, so a mp3 player would just be another accessory. Plus I get push email on (like the blackberry) - forgot to mention that.

Lets see, would I rather carry a PDA, a Phone, and an Mp3 player... on one device? Plus I can get more/bigger SD cards if I wish, and use the cards on my digital camera (don't really like the 600's camera, however the 650 is a different story).

Plus I don't have to deal with Apples crippleware.

And did I mention that when I need net access for my laptop and are really screwed for LAN/Wifi I can use my treo as a GRPS modem?

The treo is like McGyver/Swiss army knife of personal devices :)

Vulcan GPRS is so 90s and compared to 3G it's slooooooooowwww...; I hope one day you can enjoy the speed of the 3G and receive video news to your cellphone and also have video calls with your ancient Treo :p

Yup!

Im about to order a Nokia 6680 if the N70 or 6280 are not out soon :)

Even EDGE is soooo much faster than GPRS crap.
Title: ipod nano
Post by: Staga on September 17, 2005, 05:07:27 AM
6280 is using Symbian Series 40 OS and not Symbian series 60 like N70 and 6680.
There's already boatloads of free or cheap programs for Series 60... I'd pick N70 or 6680 if those would be the choices.

Yes i know its a series 40, but it has a better cam than the 6680 and is supposed to be cheaper cause its gonna compete with the K600i.

Ill wait and see what the N70 and 6280 will cost when the are released here.

Im guessing you have a 6680 Staga.

How is the audio quality with MP3's?
Title: ipod nano
Post by: Staga on September 17, 2005, 06:31:22 AM
I've been happy but to say anything more I should rip some fusion with different bit rates and CBR/VBR bit rates and maybe add few OggVorbis files and compare the quality with my Jamo Prestiges... Not going to happen today and I should built a cable from pop-port to amplifier to get them work together :)

But what I can say is the quality is far better than with from PC using Plantronics headset. IIRC 6680 has faster CPU than some cheaper models and apparently that should also increase audio quality or that's what I've heard.

video calls? yeah right.

Treo 650's are all 3G, I could upgrade if I wanted, and have video calls if I wanted. That phone of yours is a mere toy, nothing compared to what you can do on a treo.

Don't get your panties in a wad Vulcan; I'm just yanking your chain.
I'm sure Treo is fine but after carrying Communicators from 9110 to 9210i I wanted to get something smaller and lighter and 6680 was just what I needed.

btw In here Nokia's workers can choose from two phones: 9500 Communicator and 6680... it's clearly a business phone; for a toy it's much too pricey  ;)

If you're interested about 6680's picture quality here's few shots I took with it:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/gaz66/02082005.jpg
http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/gaz66/02082005001.jpg
http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/gaz66/02082005002.jpg

It has also a flash for the camera but it's just a highpower LED. Works if the target is inside 2 meters but lacks power if object is farther than that.

You can see the colours at the corners of the pictures are changing but still pretty good for a mobile phone I'd say. N70 will have much better camera... or that's what I've heard...

Thx Staga :)

Those pics are good enough for me. I have a digital camera, but like most people (i suspect) I never have it available when i need it. Was considering the K750 from SE but without 3G or EDGE (third-world 3G :D ) and a small screen i ruled it out.

Take some nudies of your GF too please so i can see how skin-tones work out.

She's about 2500km away right now but I can take a picture of me in the shower if you like :)

N70 is having same screen as 6680; 176*208pixels and 262000 colours.
Basically N70 is a 6680 with 2mb camera + (visual) radio and larger internal memory; 30mb vs 10mb.
If I use TomTom5 I can't use camera at same time so I can't navigate at the streets and take pictures at same time when driving a car :cry  :furious

On the 6680 and N70 uses the same TFT as far as I know. "Window" for the TFT is slightly bigger but I measured only the TFT. However it looks like it would be hard to fit any bigger screen in it and keep the overall size small.
N91 has larger screen but IMHO phone should be made from one piece; my fingers are like sausages and I have to be able to use it with one hand when driving or scratching my... err.. back.

At first N90 will cost about 640-700€ (Pre-order) and  6680 is now 540€ and N70 fits nicely between them (6680's Lowest price from local "Pricewatch"; last summer it was 720€ in some shops I did visit).
I'd expect 6680 price drop to 499€ before christmas and N70 to cost around 570-600€ without phone-operator subventions.

Anyways N70 doesn't offer much over 6680 so I don't think the price will be much higher than 6680's.

No, N70 is plastic just like 6680. Cam is better than in 6680 but screen is exactly same with 262k colours (65k in 6670 for example).

I really don't think N70 would be worth of waiting if you need a phone right now but if you have time to wait what the prices will be... Well I still don't know :D

You can order the N70 here now!. Komplett (http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.asp?sku=313115&cks=PRL)  is expecting them in on october 16th and they want 4.295,- (551 €), compared to 4.795,- for the 6680. :)  These prices are clean without any providers so if i buy it with a 12 month extension with my current provider i could get one for about half that price.

So... N70 it is in mid-october :)

N70 is basically a 6680 with better cam (1,3mb->2mb), bigger internal memory and radio. I'd expect the price of 6680 to come down; doesn't make sense if it would cost more than N70.
I hope you'll be as satisfied to N70 as I'm to my 6680 :)

If you're using messengers like ICQ and/or MSN Agile Messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html) is made for you; been using it lately and it works like a charm. Cheap to use; after couple days I had sent and received less than 100kb and my contract includes 100mb data transfer... haven't bothered to check it since that :D

If you're driving much in places you don't know then the TomTom 5 GPS navigator with new SirfIII bluetooth GPS receiver would be nice.
We have also similar programs with nautical maps (NaviGo) but I think it has only Finnish coast.

btw if you want you can use it as remote controller for WinAmp etc via Bluetooth or if you want you can download music to your phone via 3G/GPRS from your computer even if you're 500km away... These are pretty amazing things  :D
