Title: Verbal Judo
Post by: BaronVonDeath on September 13, 2005, 02:29:56 AM
Is there a punishment for verbal judo?

Some players are extremely rude and aggressive to others, making it a very unpleasant place to fly.

The rules state that type of behavior will not be tolerated. Why isn't anything done about it?

Couldn't the host send a warning and squelch the violators for a period of time and still allow them to play?

Why have rules if there isn't any punishment.

Does this fall into that catagory? This is from a film that was rolling when ditch said something bad after I told jam that he should teach ditch how to fly the p38 because all he could do in it was HO or cherrypick. Then he wrote that he has film of him "smokeing" me two times I told him to post the films and this is what he had to say after that.

This is probably the sort of thing that BaronvonDeath is talking about.  There are a few...."provokers," let's call them...who are able to prod otherwise pleasant people into the sort of behavior typified by Ditch's quote here.

You know who you are.

Now I understand that some people think this is just a part of competitive sports (and consider that AH might be such a sport).  Some just have hot tempers.  But the CT recently has been seeing an influx of new faces, and I, for one, would really appreciate it if you could just chill out and make the CT a pleasant place in which to fly, instead of chasing the newcomers away with this sort of silliness.

No Baron they won't do anything about it. This stuff has been going on for a couple of years now, and it's always the same people doing it. Since CT was my arena of choice and since  you  can't fly or have a setup without a bunch  whines, insults or other assorted B.S.  I voted with my wallet and left AH. Theres a couple of other people that have done the same thing. Others have just moved to MA .

Unless it affects HTC's bottom line theres really no reason for them to do anything. So your stuck listening to constant childish rants, and insults. Not to mention declining CT participation.

Hmmmm
I flew last night in the CT for the first time in quite a while (Don't count the flights when the MA is down). I could only stay for 1 sortie with my CO (MVJester), but it was a great fight. I hit the water with my rounds at a very good rate (100%) and got one kill when the person I was turning on smacked the water.
As for the "Smack Talk" it has been there forever and will be after this game is long gone. The best responce is to fight the best you can and shoot the the other side down. THAT is the best smack talk!
For those of you who think this is not the right answer, just remember I'm most likley the guy you're following and shooting at!

Don't forget to pull the trigger!

I wouldnt even use the term Judo as that would give the stuff that happens in the CT far to much legitimacy, what with Judo being a worthwhile activity. I'd call the stuff that transpires in the CT Verbal Diarrhea.

LOL Shane.

You around the next few days or so?

I've been practicing and would like to get together with you if possible. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong (and in some ways, what I am doing right). But I feel like I made a small break through lately.

cheers,
RTR

An unedited screenshot is all we need to take care of these types of problems.  We are intolerant of verbal abuse, but we cannot sit in the arenas 24 hours a day either.

What would fall into that catagory? Is smack talking verbal abuse? Is calling someone a "tard" "dweeb" over the line or is that ok?

TK - you're asking questions you already know the answer to.

Forum rules can also be applied to all arenas. See rules 4 & 5.

4- Members should post in a way that is respectful of other users and HTC. Flaming or abusing users is not tolerated.

5- Flamebaiting, trolling, or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed.

Smack-talk, calling someone a HO dweeb, or anything else that can incite or annoy someone else, is disrespectful to others. It's also abusive.

I've seen how some CT players smack-talk others and it's disrespectful and unprofessional. Period.

What's acceptable? Use the same kind of respect and attitude when speaking to your mom.

yes but thats the forum rules it says nothing about arena. but see I like smack talking because it gets the other guy p***ed off and then he makes mistakes while in a fight. but if HTC is going to punnish ppl for calling other ppl dweebs or tards I think they arent going to get to far.

If someone is offended enough to send in a screenshot, then the screenshot will be reviewed. The determination as to how to proceed will fall on HTC's shoulders.

The game is about having fun. Derogatory, inflammatory, abusive behavior does not qualify as fun for most people. Ultimately, it is the person's choice to be abusive or not. If you chose to be abusive, derogatory, and/or nasty, then you made a choice.

People who act in that manner hurt the game and we are pretty sensitive to that.

There is no justification for being abusive to others in the game or on the board.

As to the specific question about what words are ok or not.  Do you use 'tard' to be abusive and/or derogatory (i.e. mean spirited)?  Or is it used to poke fun in a light hearted manner?

It is about context.  No one can answer whether or not a word is ok or not.  If you say it in anger, then you probably are being abusive or derogatory.  All we can do is take it a case at a time.

TK, you can outfly most of the people in the CT anyway.  There really isn't a need to spoil their experience by deliberately trying to get them angry, simply to give you an advantage in a fight.

Do you think those emotes are personally abusing others?  Seems easy enough to use them without personally attacking a member of the community.

As I said, we will take each case on its own merit.

Thanks Skuzzy for your input.
