Title: My First Pitts Video
Post by: mars01 on September 15, 2005, 12:00:39 AM
Hey all,

I have attached my first attempt at some Pitts footage.

It takes about 4 mins to download over a cable modem.  Sorry dial up guys.

I still have some bugs to work out with the sun and white balance, but it can only get better from here.

Enjoy...

Thanks Morph for your help bud!
Thanks Sproge for hosting :aok

Mars01: Have a questions. Thes are based on that the camera was mounted on your head. If it isn't never mind.

Im supprised how much time you spend looking forward in any verticle wrather than flying most stuff off your wing?

Also I didn't see any over the top roll check to the horizon?

It is also obvious you have put a lot of time into straight aliron rolls, was cool how I could see your stick and rudder inputs based on the head movment. Have you ever practiced rolling circles yet?

Dang wish you were closer, would fly up and swap rides.

I noticed that too HT, and it has to be the way the camera is mounted. Trust me when i was practicing loops and rolls with him the other day all I heard was "move your head!" Check the wings!" "look here... look there!".

So he's looking and doing alot of things that arent showing up in the film for some reason. Again I think its the view angle and the way/where its mounted. I think its mounted on his head set. But again, its not showing all his head movements. Thats what I thnk. Im sure mars could give you a better answer.

Hey HT,

I set the vertical, with a quick look left and then right.  Then I watch the wing tips with my periperial vision and just kind of feel the upline in my back.  I didn't look right with the  camera, cause I didn't think it wouldn't look as good on the film.  I think that is why alot of my up lines were a bit negative.  Your right if you mean the down lines.  I need to look left and set the down line, one of my bad habbits I have to break :D.

Over top roll check?  I assume you mean the outside loop.  Normal loop I do, but I have only done a handful of outside loops so I am just starting to clean them up and get a sense of what inputs I need over the top.  Seeing the video has helped me see what is going wrong and when.  I also have to get more speed for the outside loop, cause she gets real slow over the top and loose as you can see in the vid.

I have to thank, you and the other flight sims for the aileron rolls.  I don't work them much, I just started doing the hesitation rolls and now I see they look cool on video so I have to do more of them.  The hardest part for them  was getting used to that big rudder.  Believe it or not that was only my second 8 point roll ever lol.

I love rolling circles.  I actually have some good footage from the same run of an inside rolling circle and an outside rolling circle.  They were the first maneuvers I wanted to learn after I got the pitts.  I don't know what mine look like from the ground, but I am getting at least 4 rolls for every full circle.  It's amazing how much oil they push out too :D.

I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn.

Yeah rgr that.  I was thinking the same thing after your posts last week, with the Fighters and the bird hit.  I would love to check out your RV.

If I ever get to nationals I plan on stopping in for sure.

LOL Midnight, I hear ya.  I may need you to come down and make me shed the pounds too.  They aren't comming off.

Yeah Wolf, it was such a nice day too, which the camera barely shows because it was fighting with the sun so much.

You scare me Furb :D

I wish Larry.

Now if I could only do so well in AH lolh.

Hehehehe - Morph was like a dear in the head lights the first few times.  Id watch him pull for a loop and all I could see is his head fixated on the front.  LOL.  Your rolls were nice.  By the end the loops were good once he got some Pitts SA. :D

Yeah I was trying not to move to erradically so the video footage would be decent.

I noticed you overrotated a right aileron turn by 5 degrees.  :D

Seriously, dude, hot stuff.   Brought me way back to my early days in a Citabria, which ain't nuthin' compared to the Pitts.

Thanks!

Sweet!!!

Go to http://www.supercircuits.com/  They have all kinds of micro cameras.

I used this one first, but it has no great light balancing.
http://www.supercircuits.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4224   Price $149.95

This was the one I just got and you watched.
http://www.supercircuits.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4250    Price $119.95

I use the MPV player from ION with a 1gig flash card.
http://www.supercircuits.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4596      Price $279.95

The setup will run about 400 bucks depending on the camera.

I then went to radio shack and made a 9v connector to power the camera.  Sooner or later I will hot wire it into the plane, since it will work on 12v DC.  They sell a holder for 8 AAs to power the camera but that was overkill.

I can't wait!

Believe it or not, to mount it, I just put a wire tie around the lense, then two through that one and around the top of the head set.  Crude, but works.

A note on the two cameras.  I liked the snake camera, but there wasn't anything to really grab onto to mount it and I don't think the field of view was as large and you cant change the lense.  I had to get some plastic snap on sunglasses, which I cut and taped to the pinhole so the sun wouldn't wash everything out.

For those reasons I decided to try the microlense camera.  It has some white balancing on the chip but it makes things dark rather than white out when looking directly at the sun.  I am going to try and add the sunglass stuff to it and see what happens.
